to answer your question: yes, GPUs are currently still extremely overpriced. to give you an example: I bought a GTX 1650 Super 4 years ago for €190. if I look at a 4070 Super, that card is roughly 4 times as fast, but also 4 times as expensive here in Germany, which would be fine if they were from the same generation. they are not. it used to be that 2 generations was enough to get double the performance for the same price. but all Nvidia did was make cards that are twice as fast and twice as expensive, so now the budget segment is completely dead except for trash like the RX 6500 or the RTX 3050. even the 6600 XT has just now finally dropped into the lower 200 range, and that card is years old and already at the point where it will struggle with new games.

Consumers are sick and tired of being ripped off when it comes to GPU's. The other problem is Motherboards. Consistantly no reset cmos button or error code (which should be standard for all motherbords regardless of price). 700+ quid boards and no 10Gb Lan. Or board vendors out right lying on the spec of their products or delibratly overvolting RAM/CPUs.

Somehow it feels like we still missing the midrange products, but they were released with Performance/HighEnd prices instead.

Inflation is up. Fuel, food, utility bills, my mortgage and all other essentials cost around 25% more now than they did 18 months ago. in the meantime my salary has gone up about 5%. It goes without saying that the first expenditures to get cut are frivolous luxury items like a new graphics card.

I just play video games, I don't make money with my GPU, I can't be expected to pay more than $500. Basically what consoles cost. And new $500 GPUs aren't an upgrade.

I bought my 6800 back in May for 450 USD. Both the 7700 XT and the 4060 Ti 16GB are jokes for prices above 400 USD. Now you can buy a brand new 6800 Core for 370 USD in my country.

One of the best things about your videos is the gentleman presenting the topic, very pleasant voice to listen to and he does not over pace himself, meaning speaking too fast with many cuts between takes to increase the video pace, instead its a calm listening experience and its very pleasant!

Nvida and amd price bumps are somewhat reflexions of performace gains over the years but since our salaries for the most part have not tripled in line with their prices. Its never going too be justified in most sane consumers minds.

I used to upgrade GPUs every 3 or 4 years and would usually buy an above mid range to below top end performance card, but that all stopped for me when the rtx3000 series cards were released. I never upgraded to them and since then I have picked up 2 consoles for less than what I spend on a single GPU and have a huge backlog of games to play. GPU prices are ridicuolous if you are just gaming. They are not worth the money right now and I don't see it changing in the near future. I am out of the market unless something big comes along to shake things up price and performance wise.

GPUs are cheapest in US only, rest of the world has crazy prices. I can only afford them when they appear in used Market.

The 10 series was probably the last impressive value proposition. Now all we get is improved performance, sure, but it comes with higher cost. If we wanted to pay more for more performance, we would have just paid that much last generation. The only exception to this is at the extreme high end, where performance was capped, regardless of how much you had to spend.

In the EU we are seeing sold out cards, the result is that a 4070TIS is priced like 4080S and 4080S, well they are priced like they got raised prices instead of a price cut.

Argument about inflation, more performance per dollar etc. Is a fair one, but it's still pure insanity for 70s tier GPU to come at 800-900$ MSRP. 80s tier card goes above 1000$. That is pure carnage. Like, few generations ago that price was reserved for absolute halo products, like Titan cards, and even then sometimes halo products were cheaper. Like, for the price of a single "high-end" gpu, you can almost build an entire mid-tier computer. So how does that even make any sense?

Bought a used 6700 10 gig recently. About $210 with shipping. The market for cards around this price, even used ones, is in a very weird state. People are sometimes bidding really high prices and I have to assume that that's because they're frustrated that offerings are so sparse

Buyers have every right to question the price of the 4070. That card is only 25% stronger than the 3070 and yet costs $100 more. Tim, don't try to act like the improvements were even worse before. The 1070 was 47% stronger than the 970. The 2070 was 34% stronger and the 3070 was 37% stronger but at the same price. It offends all people who can count to five and have a better memory than a fish. And if anyone is interested, overall inflation in the US (published by the U.S. Department of Labor) has increased by 30% since 2016. Not almost 100% in just 2 years as Nvidia tried to force us with the RTX 4080. But wait, the price of silicon went up rapidly. No, it didn't. The entire 40 generation uses 50% smaller chips compared to the 30. And the chip costs less than 15% of the total price of the card. So even a possible 100% increase in the price of silicon wafers would make the 4080 only $100 more expensive. And 6GB more VRAM cost less than $10. The only fair price for the 4080/Super is bellow $800. Everything else is just theft. And to be clear, other silicon doesn't follow this logic either. The Core i5-6600K cost $260 in 2016. The latest 14600K is $320. Which is only 23% more and pretty much in line with inflation. Same with AMD. The Ryzen 5 1600 cost $220 in 2017. The Ryzen 5 7600 is now $230. Almost no increase after 6 years. RAM and SSDs are even cheaper than before. DDR4 16GB was $100 in 2016. Now you can get DDR5 32GB for $75. Slow sata SSD 120GB was $50. Now you can get 10x faster NVMe 500GB. How is that even possible? As if there was no inflation at all. By now it should be clear to everyone that Nvidia lives in its own universe where the laws of nature don't exist. And Radeon just follows...

I was very lucky that my last upgrade was timed to some serious discounts .. And it has taken almost a crazy 2 years for prices to drop to what I paid for my components ... It has never been this crazy before !

Where I live - no Amazon service btw - the 7900 XT is $790 USD (after taxes) for the absolute best deal you can find. The 4070 Super can be found for about $685. The best overall value I could find locally are the 6800 non-XT and 7800 XT: $450 USD and $540, respectively. Considering the difference in pricing and performance, they basically have the same value! Everything else sucks and is simply too expensive/too poor in value...

You wanted my thoughts so here I go: I usually by GPU between 250-400€ price. That mean for example Vega 64 under 400€ (yes it was later because in launch it were well over 900€ here in Finland). This far my most expensive card is my current ~550€ 6700XT from AMD shop. But I get around 400€ from my used Vega64 so it were actually one of my cheapest card.

Bought the 7900XT Nitro +, best OC version for 739 end of Jan.

There were some deals as low as $1500 for the 4080 around or just before the release date of the 4080 Super in Australia, they didn't last long, and then a few more at $1600, but as stock goes it has been creeping back up to $1700 again as the cheapest models.

I recently noticed that here in Australia, 6700xts and 6800s are mostly gone. All that's left are 6800xts and 6650xts...

i think pricing updates should include more regions. prices in NA, EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, ASIA should be covered at least for two comparable gpus

Because of my cost of living but normally a few years ago would have bought me a top of the line GPU at 5 to $600 only gets me a middle of the range card now. Because they think they deserve to ask more for it. There were times when they had a reason to ask more for it. It literally cost more to make them. It does not anymore not newly to the degree that it did when they first started creeping prices up. They are trying to make up for lost sales during the GPU apocalypse at first and then they just went crazy. They want to charge as much as possible now so they are the markups on. These cards are absurd and while I don't think we should still be paying four to $500 for a top of the line card. I certainly don't think it should cost over a thousand. Because guess what? According to the corporate bastards that run this economy that's a good phone. So when I have to start making a choice between essentials singular essentials and a gaming PC component, I'm going to pick the singular essential nine times out of 10 if that's what I need and if it's not, I'm certainly going to be saving up for far more important things and just go for a middle of the road GPU or another low end GPU like I did at the start of GPU apocalypse. My 4 gigabyte 5500 is still kicking enough, but to play baldur's gate comfortably on a PCIe 3.0 configuration. I am not mad at you as a creator or any of your comments but I am very upset with the current state of the market and have been for years now and it's only gotten worse in literally every single factor of life. There are simply things that have to come first and they're silicon is not it.

I had to grit my teeth to even spend $330 on a used GPU last year to finally upgrade after 4 years of holding out during the GPU winter.

I currently have a 2060 that I bought 05/2020 for $380 US. It has now become long in the tooth in my latest computer upgrade. I don't think I can wait out the market for a good card at a fair price. So, I'm going to pick up a 4070ti Super at ~800-850 US. It has 16gb Vram and a 256 bus, best of this series, on a better frame too. This card should get me down the road for a good bit. Last EOFY June/July 23' sale in Aus I managed to get a 7900XT for $1149 (750USD). Been a solid card so far and a great upgrade from my then 7yr+ old 1080...

Nvidia scammed almost everyone into thinking RT is good and needed, and you only get acceptable perf from their top tier cards. They used it to try and justify these new prices multiple gens ago. The entire industry needs a mega crash imho. Record profits near every year, they deserve a good bleeding at this point for their greed. Performance and resolution improvements has stagnated, wih 'oh, shinny refections!' costing you half of your fps or more for a 5% 'improvement' and having to use fake rendering to try and get some of that back, literally scamming you into accepting fake performance that allows them to get away with lowered mem and hardware performance for 'new' cards. AMD aren't much better due to trend chasing, but at least they didn't start this crap and they kinda weren't left with a choice but to follow suit. RT is a scam just like physx was, only this one worked massivly. I'm glad it seems people are finally waking up to the fact that they have been ripped off constantly for years. Shame it took the sheep so long to realise a green wolf has been tearing out their guts for years.

weird how even now we don't get cards at MSRP, the 4080 super is 50 bucks more and the 4090 being 300 dollars more expensive instead of 400 dollars than its MSRP is lauded now. Sad time to be PC builder

I really wanted a RX 6800 from last gen but it's only available now in the used market often at inflated prices... I prefer buying them from the likes of Amazon here in my region.

Yup. If the 4080 Super at this correct price was out at initial Lovelace release I would have stayed Green instead of buying the 7900XTX regardless of the 16gb to 25gb vram difference.

What battle? The battle to make the minimum of price cuts to move the maximum cards? Framing these meager price adjustments as a battle displays how consumers have completely lost the war. The only hope against unrestrained gouging is Intel catching up and releasing reasonably powerful cards at reasonable prices.

The price question is easily answered by the console prices. A PC that was faster and better than consoles used to cost less than half as much. Now, “mid tier” cards are very expensive, to the point that the benefits vs price pushes average PC gamers out of the market. Thus, the only people who will stick with the market and upgrade are those who have lots of spare money for enthusiast components. Everyone else is priced out of the market for their hobby and don’t consider the cost of participation or upgrades to be worth it. This would *of course* be a different story if costs of living weren’t ballooning and companies would be eager to give us appropriate raises…but as someone who has had a 2.5% raise in 2 years….where exactly am I going to sacrifice for gaming? My margins for fun are shrinking daily and I can’t eat a GPU.

Im currently trying to spec out my first PC build, I'm aiming for a reasonably priced mid-range AM5 build with decent all round performance. Here in New Zealand the selection of previous gen GPU's is next to nothing, and the newest gen versions are still pricey. Im on a budget, which doesn't help the situation, especially right now as there aren't any brand new mid-range GPU's out there with a great price to performance ratio. Not to mention AM5 is still expensive to build with at the moment. Im currently shopping around the $650 NZD mark ($400 USD) for a GPU. Around this price range the only options I have are the 4060 and 7600 XT, both of which im not sold on. The 4060 ti 8gb is anywhere from $700 - $850 NZD ($430 - $520 USD), while the 16gb version is $1000 NZD ($610 USD). Meanwhile the 7700 XT is $900 NZD ($550 USD). The 7800 XT is the same price as the 4060 ti 16gb, and is cheaper than the 4070 by $70 NZD ($40 USD). Im now starting to wonder if I should hold off buying at the moment and wait for deals or even possibly the introduction of the new 8000 series AMD GPU's, which I read from somewhere could be out as early as the third quarter of this year.

As pointed by several other people, the price reductions don't apply to Europe. Here, a mid-level 4080 super costs around 1400 EUR. As long as the stores still have the original 4080 in stock, selling the 4080 super at a lower price means no one will ever buy the old 4080 stock. Nvidia's price cut would've been a reality only in a world where the 4080 stock is completely sold-out.

Both AMD and Nvidia did perfect survey on market - demand and acustomed their supply accordingly their needs. Annual sales of dgpus didn't increase, but demand did, so the prices can be kept at old MSRP or even increased over old models while offering not much better price performance ratio.

Pretty crazy how easily confused consumers are. AMD slaps 800xt to the end of a GPU name, and everyone is like "what a geart deal for an 800 series product! $500! These names mean nothing. The fact Nvidia is seling a 4070 Super for $600 is meaningless.

I normally purchase a gen behind, so got my 3080 when the 4080 dropped, but as i only really play DayZ wont need to upgrade for a while.

The idea that the cards are overpriced isn't a mentality, it's a FACT. One needs only to look at the historical trend of Nvidia to continually raise the price of their cards FAR beyond what inflation or development cost would entail. In fact, they've even said so publicly that they intend to keep the prices artificially high.

Could you also include Europe in the price discussion? For example here the 7900 xt is 400€ cheaper than the 4080.

Months ago I bought a used 3080 Ti for 1/3 of the original price here in Brazil. Excellent performance and cheaper than the overpricing RTX 40.
