American Political Scientist John J. Mearsheimer At Rising Bharat Summit 2024 | N18V | News18
American political scientist John J. Mearsheimer on Tuesday described India as an “aspiring great power” that is growing strength to strength in the geopolitical rivalry involving the United States, China, and Russia. Speaking during a session at CNN News18’s Rising Bharat Summit 2024 in New Delhi, Mearsheimer said that the United States was the most powerful country on the planet during the unipolar phase, which started with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and lasted roughly till the mid-2010s.

I think INDIA will have to do a lot more than talk on forums , when the Chinese had a GDP as India is now they did not spend their time trying to get validation from anybody , they knew they were not there , NOW EVERYBODY in the WORLD ,Including the USA KNOWS THEY ARE There....when you reach a super power status the world will know even if you do not recognize it yourself.

Mearsheimer's argument misses a very big point here. The US didn't abandon cooperation with China for containment because they saw China didn't convert to a "democracy". The best example is Japan. When japan in the 80s was rivalling US economically, they did the same to Japan and Japan hasn't been able to recover since. So this argument of democracies is a hogwash. Dont challenge america's economic hegemony is the only message out there. hence India should be very weary of getting too cozy to the US.
@nagamanjunath2102
@nagamanjunath2102 Місяць тому
I think Japan was past its prime and could never compete with the US economically apart from competing in specific sectors like automobile. Regarding India, what we are doing to the US is promising them to be a good partner in containing china. This is actually helping us get a lot of cutting edge tech from the US, jet engine deal a shining case in point, apart from the FDI and American / European business. We need to play this game until we are fully sufficient in crucial tech.
@saagnikpaul
@saagnikpaul Місяць тому
@@nagamanjunath2102 read up about the plaza accords of 1985 and it's impact on Japan. And it will be quite foolhardy to believe that the Americans will give us any of the key technologies, be it in jet engines, or semiconductors. While I do not like the US, I also don't consider them to be stupid.
@nagamanjunath2102
@nagamanjunath2102 Місяць тому
@@saagnikpaul of course they aren’t stupid, that’s the whole point why they would want us to stand up to china. Because they see us as a “gun for hire” should things go kinetic for them with china. We need to ensure they keep believing the same. The jet engine deal definitely won’t be 100% ToT but it would be as much that would significantly shorten our own R&D and time spent in catch up to that tech. We can develop that tech on our own but time isn’t on our side. Semiconductor technology is currently a multi nation effort and will remain the same in the near future. Even the US is dependent on components that the Japanese and the Europeans make for the lithographic machinery.
@saagnikpaul
@saagnikpaul Місяць тому
@@nagamanjunath2102 also while you read about the plaza accords, read up about the US domestic politics which took a similar hawkish turn towards Japan, where there was a very similar upheaval that they must decouple from Japan. Japanese electronics, Japanese cars, were burnt on the streets. So it wasn't a matter of Japan going past its prime. It was a very coordinated effort to pull down the japanese.

American Political Scientist John Mearsheimer on Tuesday described India as an "aspiring great power" that is growing strength to strength in the geopolitical rivalry involving United States, China, Russia. Speaking during a session at CNN News 18's Rising Bharat Summit 2024 in New Delhi, Mearsheimer said that the United States was the most powerful country on the planet during the unipolar phase, which started with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and issued roughly till the mid 2010s. Arguing from a realist perspective, he said the world today was a multipolar one where great powers are vying for dominance. "By 2017, Vladimir Putin had rescued Russia from the dead and Russia was back as the great power -- and China (too) because of all the economic growth that had taken place, during the 1990s and the first 17 years of the 21st century," said Mearsheimer during the session titled ;Geo Calculus' cracking code, the US expert said the world is now in a system where there are three great powers, namely, China, Russia, and the United States.

mearsheimer burst the bubble on the “india superpower” playbook of almost all ruling parties in india. India will never be considered a superpower unless 1. Technologically self sufficient 2. GDP exceeds $10000.00 (or whatever the equivalent is when you measure) 3. Currency widely used to settle (atleast 10-15% of world wide transactions excluding india).

A superpower is defined as a country that has the ability to project power and influence around the world. USA's 800 military bases and China's 151 BRI member countries are some of the examples. Not to mention having veto powers at the United Nation. Indians are of the opinion that india is today a global superpower, which is ironic since india can't even influence its neighbours Sri Lanka with regards to visits by chinese vessels. Worse, Maldives want india and indians OUT ! A WANNABE SUPERPOWER WITH NOTHING TO SHOW FOR.

I am deeply puzzled by John Mearsheimer's logics. He claims himself as a realist, and then he has his opinion on how the US establishment should handle Russia and Ukraine, and he is well aware that his opinion is not adopted by the US establishment; on the other hand, he has his opinion on how US should deal with China and Taiwan, in particular, fight for Taiwan if China adopts a military approach for the unification, and he is still 100% confident that the US establishment will act as he wishes...not to mention he has ignored all the facts that the US pulled out from Afghanistan and did not send troops to fight for Ukraine. As a realist, can he tell wishes from reality? LOL...
@hrduan7674
@hrduan7674 Місяць тому
I think John's logic is highly consistent. The question is not whether the U.S. government is willing to adopt his opinions, or even the opinions of a large group of people, but how strong the government's willingness to go to war is. Obviously the U.S. government’s willingness for war is quite strong. Since it is willing to encourage and sponsor Ukraine, which is not so important to its strategic interests, to go to war with Russia, it is very likely that it will directly participate in the war in the Taiwan Strait, which is extremely important to its strategic interests. Yes, I think this is John's thinking logic.

Our consolation is we are better than Pakistan. None of the Government here really did much to address basics .
