Critics are a bunch of out of touch elites

If this same story would be set in south side Chicago, with a black cast. Critics would have this at 100%.

Isn't this just an indictment that "critics" are out of touch? I've almost never agreed with their ratings and reviews.

I though it was a great film with very deep roots. All of the actors did an amazing job bringing the family to life on the screen. I fell in love with the whole family.

None of us “ordinary” people agree with the critics, they are out of touch.

Incredible performance. This is JD Vance’s memoir; and yes, having a mother and a birth father, one from Lexington, Ky and one from the Appalachia hills of Irvine, Ky, there was a striking similarity of the differences between country and the city folk. They both escaped a different kind of physical and emotional poverty to create a better life.

Critics are generally worthless and out of touch with the poor and middle class in this cocountr More of the same elevated elitism that is ruining this country.

How dare we make movies that show individual could possibly improve themselves even if everything around them is against it. Oh i forgot only the government can make anything better in life.

I don't get it either....I loved the movie and I ended up ordering his book.

We pass on the traumas of our ancestors and how do we break that cycle; that is the real question. Powerful. A lifetime challenge, yet opportunity. Enjoyed the movie because it is about culture and it is about one mans escape, and conflict between the love for family and the desire to experience his own happiness.

This was an outstanding movie with outstanding performances from the actors; but in the current political environment, the media were too cowardly to give it the credit that was due.

SHE'S PERFECT...GENERATIONAL TRAUMA....SO TRUE

This film was raw and touched close to many family stories. But not without leaving the audience with a spark of hope at the end. It's only a film to criticize if the 'melodrama' of addiction and cycle of dysfunction hasn't touched your life and family in any degree.

She has nothing to worry about, people totally loved the movie and her acting.

"I relate so much to the story" *interviewer - " oh did you struggle with poverty or addiction?" Amy - "no, I had self doubt. I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to voice my opinion." Oh, you're right. That's the same thing. She did an amazing job, but don't pretend you grew up like this if you didn't.

Fantastic book and movie. This story needed to be told. It really stuck with me. Tragic and beautiful at the same time.

I liked Hillbilly Elegy. It was interesting. I got this family.

Most critics nobody has ever heard of...hence they are expendable...just one unknown persons opinion at best! A difficult subject matter for sure, but it represents a true experience...wonderfully produced and directed with a tremendous cast! The two lead actresses once again put in perfect, outstanding performances. This is the kind of film that used to be more appreciated by critics who knew how to understand the value of all the production elements...they seem to have vanished!

Loved the movie. The story spoke to me, coming from a poor family with many of the same issues. I don't know what the critics are smoking but the public has spoken.

I heard she did a fabulous job and this is the only thing from Hollyweird I will seek and watch.

Everyone can agree Arrival was a great film though!

I love how people are saying how this is a bad representation of Appalachians but this is a memoir about HIS LIFE STORY. Which means that everything that happened in the movie happened in real life. It’s not like this is a fictional story.

I love the film. reminds me so much of my upbringing being born in ohio , raised in Logan, wv and now in Nashville. His childhood was very similar to mine and my maternal grandparents helped raise me and my grandmother that passed june 20,2005 of cancer was my world that was so much like his grandmother. The poverty and the childhood. the fights. It was odd watching it but amazing film, the cast and Ron Howard did amazing

Book is wonderful. The movie is superb. The cast and the authenticity that everyone brings to the roles of JD Vance's family story is very relatable. You don't have to be ignorant just because you're born in poverty and I know I'm an example of that. Very story. It is disgusting that we live in a world where voices must be silenced if they're not in the popular trend of the month. I believe that as the reporter states you can root for people from all different walks of life to overcome challenges of addiction, poverty, and set goals and dreams to accomplish in life no matter the race, no matter the circumstance..... Not everything is black and white and not everything is one-sided. I would challenge anyone who has had their own family trauma to read this and and watch this film and not feel something! I think you'll feel a connection and I think you'll feel inspired and you laugh and you'll cry and you'll really see that so many people can have pain from all walks of life. You'll see that even against all the odds, sometimes with a little bit of hope and luck and blessings and hard work, a person can overcome and make a better life for themselves and their family. You can be better and do better and no better and still feel connection with the place that you come from. And you don't have to be ashamed. You don't have to carry the shame of trauma with you. And you don't have to apologize for not being the flavor of the month for the latest media sensationalism.

Such an articulate actress. She did amazing in this amazing movie.

Since the Critics don't financially support movies but the audience does, what the critics have to say when they dislike a film but the audience loves, is of no importance.

Who cares what critics think? Just proves critics don't know the difference between Chicken Salad and Chicken Sh*t.

Why do they ask actors and actresses these stupid questions? They get the role and they're happy they got it. They do the best they can reading the script and following the director's advise. They have no input as to how it's filmed, shot or edited. If it works out, it's great. If it fails who do we blame? This film must have ended shooting half a year ago or more. Now that there's a controversy she has to come up with something. Make up your own mind.

I really did enjoy it! There are MANY people who live at [or below] the poverty level. People are ALL flawed--the stigma of being poor only complicates issues, lack of proper education, lack of nutritious food, and . . . as hard as people try; the STIGMA of being poor just beats you down!! The whole town knows it, and shuns appropriately! The life and times of a poor nuclear family CAN rub people the wrong way--just as it is in REAL life!!

There is nothing negative about this movie. The only people complaining aren’t real Americans.

Critics are people that get paid for an OPINION. I'm picky about movies and actors performances. It was a good movie and she did a great job.

JD Vance's moderate conservatism speaks to me as a liberal who has voted Democrat but believes in personal responsibility. I believe very strongly in the power of education and how it can provide people with the opportunities for a better life in an otherwise harsh and disquitable United States. I feel for JD Vance's plight and am saddened that his sister did not call 9/11, sentence their mother to JAIL for a very long Singaporean-style prison sentence abuse for a very long period of time. I have a very hard time understanding why someone like that would make the personal choices that she made. I DID NOT do such a thing when my mother died at a young age. I feel angry on behalf of JD's mother - she needs to do some atoning by being of service to him. SHE should not have done drugs. I came from my own set of disadvantaged circumstances - when I was 19 I was managing local political campaigns, when I was 21 I was leading staff for statewide political campaigns. I have drank alcohol in the past - and have members of my family who are alcoholics. When I drank I always made sure that I was comporting myself with both state and federal law and caused minimal inconsiderateness to people around me. When people told me that I needed to stop drinking in college because it was hurting my health and career prospect I rapidly stopped. I DID NOT have to stop. I could have kept drinking and ended up in rehab at best or jail at worst. I don't know why JD Vance's mother wouldn't do the same. As well, I DID NOT have children (and still do not have children because I do child planning). It is INTENSELY frustrating to see her conduct negatively effect JD. While I hope that JD forgives her, I believe that SHE needs to do the work to atone for her bad decisions! If the government needs to create more schools and stronger academic opportunities we should! Several people here have commented that Appalachia has failing schools. As a future government worker, I support additional resources to low income neighborhoods so that ambitious students can graduate from a PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITY!
