On the 15th of November 2018, John Allen Chau took a boat to North Sentinel Island expecting a peaceful welcome. He never made it back home. His bizarre plan was to convert the Sentinelese to Christianity, although as you'll come discover, they had no interest in being converted, and John Allen Chau's fate still isn't truly known.
This is, An American Tourist Sailed To North Sentinel. It Ended Badly

According to a video Geno Samuel made about the Sentinelese, Chau also tried to speak to them in the South African language Xhosa for some reason. He seriously expected that the population of an isolated island thousand of miles away from Africa would understand it just because

So from what I understand, the Sentalese are aware of outside humans and can understand that they generally mean no harm when visiting. The Sentinelese prefer isolation so much because they have observed that whenever the island made contact with an outsider for longer than a short encounter like with the anthropologist, disease ravaged their community (since they probably have no immunity to the diseases of the outside world). Such observations must've been carried down orally, each generation warning the next to not let an outsider stay, lest disease follow him and rip through their community. And since the island is so small, even a handful of deaths is their equivalent of the Black Death. Thus, generation over generation this belief has only been reinforced: "do not let the unfamiliar man stay, for Death himself accompanies him."

Apart from the danger of visitors being killed, I've heard it's also for the protection of the natives themselves that the island is off limits. Being isolated for so long, it's expected that they don't have immunity to a lot of diseases that the rest of the world does. If a visitor were to unwittingly bring a communicable disease with him to the tribe, they could very well be wiped out.

I see many in the comment section not happy with him for trying to share the gosepl with the sentinelese people... Let me put it this way. You and 10 others are stranded in a desert. All of you'll are literally dying of thirst. Somehow you stumble across an oasis. After gulping the precious water what do you do? Run back and tell your dying friends right? Or would you be selfish and never go and tell them? And what if a friend thinks youre lying, wouldn't you attempt to drag him to the oasis even if it meant hurting his feelings?? That's what missionaries do. Christians believe they have found the creator of humans. He has a purpose for each human and died for every single human (including you). So if you believe in him and accept his free gift of salvation, you will spend eternity with him in heaven after death. I found this amazing news not by my own goodness... Not at all. One of the early church founder "Paul" described himself add the 'chief of sinners'. So it is not by our own virtue that we found Gods grace. We stumbled upon it and experienced it for ourselves and thus want to share it with the world... And ppl like this man and Jim Elliot are willing to even DIE just to share this good news. Not trying to spread a religion. These are not crazy people who are willing yo die just to add more followers to their religion. But they're doing it to share the good news of God, and salvation from sin that they have experienced themselves!

There is a joke that seems similar to the John story. There was going to be a big flood in small village, everyone was escaping, except one priest who sat silently on the church stairs. When people asked him why he's not going, he replied with "I trust God, He will spare me". Everyone just shruged and fled town. Several hours later a rescue boat appeared, swimmed to the priest who was now on the first floor of the church. The rescuers asked him to go with them but he replied with "I trust God, He will spare me". Rescuers tried to talk him out of it, but with no avail, so they went searching for other people. Several hours later the waters started to reach 3rd floor of the church, the rescuers swimmed again to the priest, asked him to go with them, but he again declined with "I trust God, He will spare me", so they went away. At night, the rescuers tried one more time, the water was so high the only visible thing around was the top of the church tower. Clinging to the cross at the top was the priest. Rescues swimmed to him, and begged him to come with them, because if he stay here, he will drown. The priest again declined with "I trust God, He will spare me". Rescuers swimmed away shaking thier heads. At midnight the priest fell asleep and fell into the water where he drown. At the heaven gates he asked St Peter "Why the God didn't spare me, I had all the trust in Him!" and St Peter replied "You moron, three times He sent the boat for you!"

One thing vaguely mentioned by Sunny and often theorized by many specialists concerns the 1880 British expedition (when they had the brilliant idea of abducting the children and the couple). I, like many others, believe that this was a breaking point in establishing friendly and lasting contact with them. But why? In addition to the whole incident of kidnapping kids (which is already very bad), they brought them back to the island apparently very sick. Just like the natives in the Americas during their first contact with the West, it was an epidemiological disaster. Unknown diseases, to which the natives had no antibodies, massively killed them. Unfortunately, the sentinel kids may have transmitted and created a huge epidemic on the island. I suppose that, for generations, the Sentinelese pass down the belief of a curse brought by strangers from outside the island. You can see them burying many of the outsiders' gifts as a reminder of the last time these gifts brought them diseases. Even though the anthropologist in the 90s did manage to establish some form of contact with them, it was only possible because of the 20-25 years of regularly bringing them supplies. And even then, some of them threatened him. Unfortunately, I think it is culturally accepted among them that the outside world is dangerous and that people will try to kill or hurt them...

Makes you really wonder what would have happened if the 1800’s expedition didn’t kidnap the kids? I’m not saying we’d have a perfect relationship with them, for all accounts it seems even before the kidnapping they were hostile towards outsiders but maybe they’d be less aggressive towards random passer-by’s and people who end up there accidentally, hell maybe they’d build boats and see where the people beyond the island come from because in that timeline they wouldn’t have the mind set of “bad stuff happens to people who leave the island”

I cannot believe he assumed they would ‘accept him immediately.’ Why would he think that? What have we learned about this island? It seems entitled… it wasn’t the best decision, though I’m so sorry for his family’s loss.

When you are 100% convinced that the creator of the universe has chosen you to be the first person to spread the word of Jesus to them, why wouldn't God enact a miracle to make them understand? If it didn't work the first time then Maybe this is a test from God. If you die the 3rd time then that was all part of gods plan. The creator of the universe would want the word spread under any and all circumstances

@@akira-hr4tv so, in order for a missionary to be successful, there have to be sacrifices, is that it?
@akira-hr4tv
@akira-hr4tv 10 місяців тому
@@EricWulfe it really depends on who you ask. when people are that deep into religion their decisions will always be justified to themselves as gods will or something god wants. There are plenty of other people this guy could have reached out to safely but he believed that he was chosen to help these people specifically. When it comes to the idea of sacrifice some it's kind of believed that you are to sacrifice everything for God. To do anything for yourself is selfish. I personally don't believe these things but it is what's taught.

@@EricWulfe this guy could have reached out to many people safely. I don't think his life (through death) needed to be sacrificed but as a missionary it is expected that he dedicate his life (sacrifice) to spreading the word of God. It really does depend on who you ask.

Apparently there was once a party that went there with a guy who spake som tribe language to see if he could communicate. He did, but they said so many hostile things they went into a corner in a feral position and were very afraid.

"I hollered, "My name is John!" as an American, I'm sure this guy was an American because thus far only Brits and Americans believe that anyone can understand English if you YELL. IT. SLOWLY. AT. SOMEONE. Having had a few Australians friends visit me in Texas, I never saw them do this to our Latino population and no Canadian did this to me when it was clear I didn't know French.

I witness this a lot when I travel out of the country. Some jacked up entitled American will speak slowly, loudly, and top it off with puppeteer arms as that will steer directly to comprehension🥴🔥

To be fair there’s a reason Americans do that. It might be because English is the lingua franca of the world, so a lot people end up at least knowing some words? It’s crazy what happens when you actually use 1% of your brain cells before commenting, because then you would have been able to realize that.
