Why would anyone kill a swan for attacking potential predators that get to close to their brood? It's not a bear or a crocodile that can actually do serious harm and might develop a habit of attacking humans. It's a bird that a person can just clamp under their arm and carry around like a duffle bag, and they don't have any actual weapons or defenses beyond their size so they basically have to bluff their way through any encounter with a creature larger than them.

The rats live along the lakeside, I see them regularly and will feed them away from the nest as they need to eat too, but it did seem to be searching for food rather than living there and that’s a worry. Hopefully it was after food scraps and not the eggs, but they can and do take eggs too. I’m putting a sign up today explaining about why no one should throw food at the nest.
