1/15/22 second update: @andrewcallaghan7333 has posted a new video ( • In Response ) relating to recent news. Thank you Andrew for finally addressing the allegations, and outlining steps to work on yourself. Please take the opportunity to set an example for how to improve going forwards.
1/15/22 update: Reiterating what I wrote in my pinned comment and said in my followup video ( • Introducing myself aft... ), I strongly encourage Andrew and @Channel5UKposts to take the allegations seriously, apologize for wrongdoing, work to chart a better course forwards that ensures this sort of thing does not happen again, and also allow a variety of different budding journalists to take turns getting more chances with interviewing and leadership roles at @Channel5UKposts .
1/10/22 update: I have added a pinned comment discussing the emerging allegations that I learned about after filming and posting this video.
I put together videos I recorded with Andrew Callaghan of @Channel5UKposts fielding questions in a sometimes heated interview with Robin Young at WBUR Boston, after a screening of his documentary This Place Rules, about divisive media and politics leading up to the 2020 election and Jan 6.

@eldercrain

Andrew is very clear about his influences and methods. He's doing Gonzo Journalism. Similar to how Hunter S. Thompson did things, but necessarily updated for the modern world. A lot of that is exactly what he said in the first 2 minutes of this video: "I only film people who were already exploiting themselves". Gonzo Journalism involves basically just "vibing" with your subject. You don't need to agree with them, you just need to shut up and go for the ride. And that brings a level of access and genuine revelation with the interview subject that, as you point out, this lady will never achieve trying to invite Jones or anyone else into a studio to do a formal interview. Andrew is like a cross between Louis Theroux and Hunter s. Thompson. Watch what he does when interviewing people...he just follows them around and shuts up. He'll ask a question here and there but he's mostly just shooting the shit with them and knows that the people he's interviewing cannot abide silence so they'll keep talking without much prompting.

I feel that Andrew is continuing their tradition of speaking truth to power, but in a way that doesn't condescend to people he disagrees with. I think he calls his interview approach "radical listening," and it's a perfect way to handle the inchoate babble on both sides. I think the point was that part of being large is having accountability. Its like tax fraud where you can't nail every small, transient actor, so they can largely get away with being dishonest. But if a large company (that actually has money behind it) that can't simply rename or disappear makes that mistake, it's a totally different story. So you would expect "mainstream" to have to tell the truth because of liabilities. Unfortunately this doesn't actually play out because fox is mostly punditry (as Andrew points out), and they aren't held to the same standards of truth telling. If you read her as "how is that mainstream news reporting", I think it's less crazy sounding.

The way I saw it, she was a fan honestly. I think what Andrew does is culturally and morally complex, especially in this era. Undoubtedly some of the questions did come off as pointed but I don't think that was a lack of respect for Andrew it was her trying to get to the core of what makes what he does tick. You even saw how she pulled back the interview immediately after Andrew points out that the question is accusatory she tells him straight up that it is, but she respects him enough to believe he'll be able to represent himself. Even before that she talks about the Don Lemon interview where he was asked similar questions and wasn't given any of the engagement he was given here. They might have gotten off on the wrong foot but I do not think she's some out of touch old woman like streamers and comments are making her out to be.

I think she still carries old hat views mainstream=credible, not the modern understanding mainstream=popular (regardless of veracity of news). 3/15/23 update from Rob: I appreciated Andrew releasing an apology video and I have responded with my own thoughts in another video. I’ve recently been working on my own various videos around Boston, here is the first one in a series on homelessness in Boston: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/eqSrd6KCpG2Juqs.html 1/10/23 update from rob: while filming and posting this video I was not aware of Andrew’s allegations that were emerging. I am not taking down the video, as some asked me, since I still consider it an enlightening (and intense) discussion about the media and divisions in America and the insights Andrew gained interviewing people and making his movie. I hope that he addresses the allegations and uses his position of media attention to set an example for how to respond to these situations, admitting any of his own wrongdoing and allowing others a chance to express their experiences and grievances and chart a path forward. I appreciate how some other interviewers have taken turns picking up the microphone in some of Channel 5’s more recent content this past year, and I hope this trend continues with fresh faces taking up the mantle of journalism and helping to carry Channel 5 forward. I may edit this or post a new pinned comment as information involves.

Hunter S. Thompson rode with the Hell’s Angels for a year as an honorary member in order to research his novel of the same name. He did this because, in order to accurately report upon a phenomena, you have to listen. You have to understand before you diagnose. It was this style of Gonzo journalism that allowed him to accurately and effectively explore *what* perpetuates the anti-establishment rhetoric of these outlaws. People don’t wake up and decide to become a criminal, or a conspiracy theorist, or what have you. Various societal influences have a direct impact on what fuels these people and forces them into their own communities. Becoming a Q Anon conspiracy theorist isn’t that cause, it’s a *symptom* - the cause is rooted firmly in undiagnosed mental health problems, laughably ineffective adult media literacy, and a battalion of news outlets whose sole purpose is to manipulate these gullible, mentally ill people into believing what they’re selling. You can’t just speak. You have to listen. And that’s what Channel 5 successfully does. And it’s only when you listen that you can correctly find the root of the problem and begin to solve it.
