Written and produced by Serriecia Sesay.
Serriecia has nurtured and strengthened her skills in community development, advocacy, and works as a photographer and editor at Girls Behind the Lens, also training other young women in photography.
As a Purposeful Circles of Us fellow, she has loved being able to tell her own resistance story through filmmaking. She aims to create a platform where women and girls will have the opportunity to tell their own stories and the problems affecting them and be able to access a safe space for mentorship and advice.
“My story focuses on the decisions that women make on their choices of fashion and the reactions women get from society because of their choices. The film explores how fashion choices emphasise who we are, and are an expression of our identity. I am telling this story to change the stereotypical thinking that society has of women and girls that wear anklets or foot chains, and really for young women to know that it’s their right to make their own decisions.”
