With the littles, they really do act their age, I swear. Mine behaves like she's roughly ten to twelve (it's hard to judge sometimes), and she's done things like that. She'll get giggly when someone praises her, or sheepish when someone raises their voice, doesn't think of doing "adult" things like chores or paying bills. Earlier today, Heather (my "little") got to meet my ES dog for the first time. She was estatic because it was "her first dog", and giggled for a long time, ran and chased the dog like we'd never played with one in our life. My mother found it adorable (as she knows I have DID), like seeing her little girl again.

Movies do nothing by damage this perception to the public about what it is. Very very simply, due to trauma, the brain in last resort defense compartmentalizes developing parts of personality and experiences positive and negative that associate to those personalities. Because it is in the mind of a child, the personalities are not chosen consciously. It can be anything from say developing a motherlike figure or protective father, or even a dragon alter to cope. Non-human alters can and often exist because the child desperately doesn't want to be human anymore as they see that as the source of their trouble. So they develop a part of them that becomes a powerful beast, incapble of defeat or insecurity. Maybe they talk, maybe they don't. All depends on what part of the role they need to play for the system The biggest thing to remember is all of this IS this person. All these people are her, they are all equally valid and play a role and it's a fascinating thing to see because it shows how the brain can work and that anything like this could happen to such extreme repeated duress in childhood. It also makes us question, "who am I"? I think most people if they think about it enough, can actually very surfacely understand the feeling of more than one person, especially in situations to which create cognative dissonance. IE the head and the heart being a most laymen terms example. Make those two different personalities, with different memories and different levels of good an bad memories each has access to. Then separate every other part, and also parts that you wish you were when you were a kid. It's crazy sounding, but it actually makes more sense when you understand how it comes about. So maybe the changing looks fake, perhaps because it was more exaggerated than what you thought it might be, but consider that the Host was under a lot of stress talking about a lot of these things, but trying to stay the one in focus, but her defense protector Kyle was the new focus to deal with what was going on.
