Antique Rusty Pruning Saw - Too Broken to Restore... I Make a New One

This old rusty and broken pruning rip saw was sent to me by a follower on Instagram. He was on a mission to clean the Swiss Alps from trash. They removed around two tons of trash in total. At the Albert-Heim-Hut, which was built in 1918, he found this old pruning saw. It must have been digged into the ground for decades. It was in a terrible condition to say the least. The handle was missing half of it and the wood was rotten. The blade looked very bad, it had very thick layers of rust and dirt on it.
Right when I saw this saw for the first time on a picture I knew this will be a very difficult project. It was very obvious that I need to replace the handle, the question was if I could possibly save the blade. Because otherwise there would be nothing left from the original saw after the restoration. After sandblasting it was very clear right away that the damage on the blade is beyond repair. Rust has eaten away a lot of material, some teeth were missing and there was heavy pitting all over the blade. I thought for a few days what I want to do with this project. Should I trash it and start something new, or should I keep going and replace what needs to be replaced, even though there would only two brass plates stay from the original saw. I also asked this question to my Patreon and channel members and the answer was a very clear „yes, keep going“. And that's what I did.
For the blade I choose a stainless high carbon steel (1.4116). As the original teeth had no offset, it was very easy to make a new one. Therefore was the blade tapered, I managed to achieve that with a file. For the hardening I wraped the blade in stainless steel foil, heat it up to 1050°C for a good 20 minutes and then quench in preheated (60°C) oil. I only made one tempering cycle right after the quench in a bakeoven for 2 hours at 250°C. I didn't want the blade to be too hard so it can still stay felxible.
I decided to make the handle out of smoked oak. It's a very common wood in Switzerland. That was my first time working with this type of wood and I loved it. Its hardness made it very nice to work with. The dark color fits perfectly with the brass.
I think this project is a very good example of the ship of Theseus. Even though there are just two parts left from the original saw, you could say this is a new saw and others might say it's still the old one just restored/repaired. For me this is clear, it still is the old saw. What happens if the handle of your saw breaks? You'll replace it and it's still your saw.
What happens if the blade breaks short after? You'll replace it and it's still your saw.
I hope you like my work and the video.

Please note: This video was not created for the meme. I really wanted to restore this saw when I first saw it. It's obvious that the handle is gone and I was hoping to save the blade. I tried for two days to weld up material, but it didn't work and turned out to be mess. So instead of trashing the whole project I kept going and this is the result. Edit: 1) The teeth of this saw had no set, as seen on the original blade after the sandblasting. Instead the blade is tapered. 2) I know this can't be called a restoration, that's why I title this video not as restoration.

Honestly, even if you couldn't recover even the tiniest thing from the original Product, seeing you Recreate the devices so accurately, taking direct inspiration from the original designs, is just as good. It's like a Modern, WORKING Replica of said antique. And since you still use all of the same methods that you do when restoring, it's just as satisfying either way. That said, Awesome video, friend! Edit: Yes, I know He recovered the Brass pieces in this particular Project. What I meant was, regardless of how much he could or couldn't recover, and even if he really couldn't recover *anything* at all, I'd still enjoy watching him work either way, and admire the finish product all the same, because of the sheer quality of his work overall.

beautiful work. I've worked in a museum, and I can tell you that there was more restoration in your rebuild than you'll find in a lot of 'historical' artifacts behind the glass. One important step you forgot though: setting the saw teeth. You need to bend the alternate teeth out slightly in different directions so that the cut you make in the wood is always slightly wider than the saw blade itself. This prevents (or at least lessens) jamming. There is a tool you can get which does this, it looks similar to a hand rivet tool but shorter. Maybe you can find one to restore or make one for yourself. Alternatively, since you're great with machines, you might machine a saw tooth setting thing which you could use to do all the teeth at once in a bench vice. Anyway, great job.

One striking thing about all your videos is that when you present an item or part, it's almost as if I'm holding the part in my hands and looking at it, turning it and considering all the possibilities my own self. Your work is extremely zen! Thank you.

Customer: “Sir, we found this White Star Liner broken in half at the bottom of the Atlantic.” My Mechanics: “No problem, I make new one...” Seriously folks, is there anything this fine gentleman can’t fix to better than new condition???
@FolgoreCZ
@FolgoreCZ 3 роки тому
Well, no, it isn't. Technically, everything is made on the same machines and with the same tools as he uses. Usually, on more primitive versions of these machines, so it is actually easier today. So obviously, he is capable to recreate any part of any mechanical device. And since he doesn't need to be concerned with price and manhours put into a single piece, he can take the time removing castmarks and things like that, so yeah, better than new condition it is. It kinda take away the magic of it when you look at it like that, but it's the truth. But I too prefer the magical explanation. ;-)

Where once there was just decay, there is now a tool. The few parts that remain were made in a different time, and now help bind the new together. If not for the old original, there would be no new, if not for being found by your follower, it might have remained where it was until nothing was left. We may not be able to save everything, but we can always create to make sure the idea lives on. I like to think you did it justice when it otherwise would have been considered junk and completely destroyed.

I love thinking of that old saw rotting in the Alps for decades, even a century, ready to disappear from the world forever. But no! MyMechanics is here to bring you a new life little one! It's a shame that only those two parts could be saved, but you did a great job to give this saw its former glory back (and maybe in an even better condition than when it was made). You saved what you could, and now it's ready to work again, instead of being lost in the mountains!
