Hey brother! I got an old witch story for ya. We were raised in Macon County, Alabama, and that's the tail-ead of the Appalachians. My granny Haywood was born in 1907, and she said that when she was a young girl, they were an old witch woman who lived in the woods close to their house. Well, the old woman used to come by their house all the time, and she would cut across their pasture to get to the main road. Well, great grandaddy told her to go another way and that she wasn't welcome on their property. Granny Haywood said that from that day, all sorts of things started happening around the house. The cow dried up, the hens quit laying, and grandaddy's hunting dog died. They'd hear all sort of noises in the woods at night. Like folks screaming and wild animals howling. It kept them up almost all night long. Well, great granny got tired of it after a while, and she went out to the edge of the woods one night and yelled out, "Be a real woman and come face me!" Well, nothing happened. Everything went quiet. They all went back to bed. Along about 2 or 3 in the morning, a big black cat jumped in the window and made the loudest blood curdling howl you ever heard. It woke everybody in the house up, and they all came running to the living room where it was. Great granny opened the door and yelled for it to get out, but it wouldn't budge. Just sat there and kept squalling. Finally, great grandaddy kicked it, but it still wouldn't budge. Great granny hit it in the hear repeatedly with a broom and said, "In the name of God Almighty! Get outta this hous you witch!" They said that when she said that, the cat shot out the door like it was on fire. The next day, they all went into town, and folks were talking about the old witch woman from the woods. They said somebody found her laying out on the creek bank that morning, and her face was all swolen and was black and blue like she'd been beaten. They said she kept saying, over and over, that an angel had smote her with his sword. They took her off to the asylum after that, and no one ever saw her again. My granny always said that that old witch had turned herself into a cat and had come into their house to take revenge on her parents. This story was told to us many, many times when we were kids. My old granny lived to be 97 and could tell some haint stories that would curl your toes. I hope you enjoyed my story. I really love listening to your channel. Honestly, I’m a transplant to North Carolina from Iowa. Missus and I been here since 2009, and the longer I’ve lived here, the more the Carolinas feel like home. Stories like these make me appreciate my new home state and this neck of the woods a lot more. Iowa never quite felt like home the way the Carolinas do. Any time I’ve been out west in the Smokies, it’s just felt like home. Hearing these stories makes the love of this land go even deeper, and of course, they serve as a warning to those that are fool enough to disrespect their elders. Cheers!

Thanks so much for the story. I enjoyed so much. My Dad used to tell us kids stories like that. He came from a family of 14 kids. They lived way in the country. They are nearly all gone now and a tornado took the little town. Nothing left of it at all. It's sad how time takes memories and makes memories. Thanks again.

I like answering his question like another good old boy, I ask for a beer and sit down and listen.

My mother had a story of her and her first husband and the night her mother in law died. She looked up to see a coffin glide across the wall, other kin folk was sitting out side an a fire ball came down and sat beside them then went back up. Mother was living in a haunted house at the time. Loved hearing those stories over and over.

Stories is one thing. I was raised in the southern tip of West Virginia. As long as people don't cross the wrong line's,old stories are just old stories. On the other hand, when people go crossing the wrong line's doin thangs they ought not to and messin with thangs they don't understand, if they ain't careful they just might become a character in one of the stories.

I absolutely love Listening to Your stories. My Grandmother and her parents so on and so all lived in Trigg Ky. I have never been there myself. Anyway She would tell us kid’s stories like this all the time also. When we would ask her if they were real she would just shake her head yes. ❤

One of the greatest things about Mountain Lore was their fantastic abilities to tell stories that captivated the imagination of the listener. Don't matter if it's the Appalachian Mtns or the Ozarks Mtns there was always something strange and mysterious out there in them hollers and running through them hills. Being born and raised at the foot of the Alleghany Front I heard my share of grand old tales growing up. The three states that I think probably have the best stories are Kentucky, West Virginia(my state) and Tennessee. Thanks to guys like you Jared for continuing a great old Mountain tradition of story telling and always sharing the mystics of the legends and myths of that old Mountain Magic that could garner anyone attentions. Thanks again old buddy cause that was some time well spent!

I think I've heard of the tradition of dumping boiling water and salted animal fat into the footprints of trespassers to burn their feet from my Auntie. She told me if they ignore the markins and the hints she put up that, that usually got their attention LOL. I usually just laugh off that stuff until I heard this story today. Now I'm wondering LOL. I've been told Legends have a hint of Truth just like folktales and old stories hold a hint of Truth. She's quite old and has lived in the mountains of Pennsylvania all her life.

While I have relatives from the Deep South on both sides of my family... I myself did not grow up in Appalachia. My first (and probably only) introduction to the people and ways of Appalachia are from Hollywood movies... and most notably... "Next of Kin" and the horror movie "Pumpkinhead" which I think out within about a year of each other. While "Next of Kin" is more of crime/ action movie... it does have one scene that was rather spooky: At the very beginning of the movie.... Det. Truman Gates (Patrick Swayze) responds to an apparent "bar-fight turned murder"... Gates arrives the apartment of the main suspect, Billy Simpson, where Truman & Billy have a chat... and soon learn they are from neighboring counties in Kentucky (Harlan & Perry Cos.)... and Truman claims that he and his brothers used to hunt in Willy's home-county of Harlan up on "Daggot's Ridge". Billy explains that he knows exactly where Truman is talking about: "Hey, there are ghosts up on that ridge. Yeah... one time my dogs took me straight down this hollow (holler??). There weren't no wind or nothing. It just got real cold. Then all at once... them dogs started to howl. Like... like they was talking to the dead. Yeah, man. There are ghosts up on that ridge". Sure... it was just a movie... but that being said... something was really eating at Billy Simpson especially to make him think of that past memory that still haunted him. The next movie "Pumpkinhead" was supernatural horror film, starring actor, Lance Henriksen, who plays "Ed Harley"... a scorned father who's on the warpath and seeking vengeance for the untimely death of his young son at the hands of reckless teenagers. Harley seeks out an (Appalachian??) witch of Black Ridge named 'Haggis' who sends Ed Harley out to "Razorback Holler"... a cemetery that apparently served as an informal resting place (or dumping-ground) for those poor souls who were less-than-loved or who were downright rejected and despised. Or.... as Haggis put it to Ed Harley: "Ever hear of 'Razorback Holler'??... There's an old graveyard way back... deep in them woods. Mountain-folk use to bury kin in there... kin they was ashamed of!!". As if that old crone Haggis couldn't be any scarier... she wasn't one to mince words and made no bones about it. That old woman looked like she was nothing but a bag of bones who couldn't lift herself out of her rocking chair even if her last breath depended on it... but she easily made the Wicked Witch of the West (from the Wizard of Oz) look sweeter than sugar... and scared the living piss out of me. Holy Sh**!!😳 From what I can recall... it is never clearly stated what county, town or state where the events of "Pumkinhead" take place... That being said... the only place(s) that I have ever heard words like "holler, kin, kin-folk" ect. has only been in the Deep South of the US and especially in Appalachia.

Wow, I just found this site. I loved the homey feel of this story! I lived in rural upstate western NY (definitely NOT the same as NY city and the eastern side of the state!) We had a pot belly stove in the front room, grandma, and the rest of us would all sit close as we could to the stove, grandpa's chair was leaned against the wall closest to the stove. He would delight us with all kinds of stories, from days being a cowboy out west, to working on roads in Pennsylvania, and of course he had more than a couple scary stories as well! Thank you for the enjoyable & nostalgic trip! I want more, so I'm a new subscriber!

Such a great channel in a sea of channels based on this theme. It stands out for its authenticity. Every story feels personal from the perspective of someone who understands every aspect of it. He inhabits the characters in an organic way that adds to the atmosphere. It’s a unique language of storytelling that is also uniquely American. I appreciate this creator preserving a slice of pure America during simpler times. It’s a national treasure of our country’s heritage and not a Hollywood imitation. Terrific content that deserves a wide audience hankering for great storytelling. Another compelling thing about them is that they are all basically about family. That’s the framing of most every story, which adds to the meaning and the dramatic tension. The music, too. Subtle as it should be in the background. Well done.
