Apple has announced the iPhone 13 range and a new iPad Mini, all with the new Apple A15 Bionic processor. Built on 5nm and using 15 billion transistors, this should be a power house, but Apple is being very coy about the performance. Has Apple stumbled in its design of the A15?

For those who are saying things like "this video didn't age well" based on leaked Geekbench scores, can I suggest you re-watch the section where I talk about the counterargument at 05:12. I say that there is likely going to be a 5 to 10% CPU increase based on Apple's claim that it is 50% faster than the competition. To quote me at 06:13, "we will expect the A15 to be better in benchmarks". Please understand what I have said before making silly remarks, it only shows that you didn't understand.
@razisn
@razisn 2 роки тому
Regardless of whether or not you implicitly predict the results of benchmarks, the premise of the whole video is wrong. The cryptic details, for example are you referring to single or multi core etc etc, is there just to cover your arse. The premise is wrong because you state there will be insignificant performance increases and you go on devising a scenario why this is so involving people leaving Apple and whatever have you, but the initial benchmarks show that overall performance increases are not insignificant. That is the gist. Now tell me I did not understand the premise of this video. If I did not then nobody else did and that is probably not the fault of the audience.
@GaryExplains

You don't understand the premise of the video. When Apple didn't release any performance numbers, I went looking and found the iPad numbers. That is the premise of the video, the numbers that Apple published.

There can be many explanations for this meagre performance increase if there is any. i) What Gary said about their engineers leaving and joining Nuvia ii) Apple deliberately didn't want to increase the single-core performance as it would be faster than the impending M1x chip which is based on A14 iii) With the increasing demand for manufacturing chips, it would've been easier to just manufacture a similar chip rather than a redesign iv) Looking at their huge claims about battery, I wouldn't be surprised if they focussed more on efficiency than raw performance. v) They simply had to make a tradeoff between ISP, Neural engine and CPU and they focused more on the formers
@shresthsonkar9207
@shresthsonkar9207 2 роки тому
>(iii) It doesn’t appear they’d benefit from it unless it’s exactly same which is not the case. The mask for the A15 die and A14 die will be considerably different. Primarily for two reasons, 1. The A15 has more cache 2. The A15 has more transistors That alone makes it different enough that you can’t apply the same economy of scale as some other product, like, let’s say, a two models of a car from same brand using same seats and interior but physically different from outside A chip is Made as a single unit, by etching silicon wafer with lasers. You need to use different masks to mask the A14 and 15 if they’re so dissimilar. >(v) You’re actually forgetting the GPU. By far, GPU dues are very large compared to GPU dies. The GPU takes the most amount of area on an SoC, and considering the fact that apple has utilised a 5core GPU option in a15, they have lesser space for cpu unless they increase die area. Increase in die area reduces yields and increases costs. So apple deliberately had to nerf the cpu gains this year and focus on GPU. This sudden focus on GPU could be the effect of ExynosXAMD tieup or simply a bigger margin to ensure that 120Hz works well on pro models. The iPad has 5cores because it’s more tha 1440p while iPhone 13 is just a little over 1080p. iPhone 13Pro is same as the iPhone 13 in resolution, but due to 120Hz, needs more GPU grunt. So apple just had to use better gpus if they wanted 120hz on iPhone. A lot of so called “cheap androids with 120hz” have actually very weak processors and their GPU can’t even handle 60Hz gaming let alone 120hz for demanding titles like pubg mobile or genshin impact.
@usama1168
@usama1168 2 роки тому
@@shresthsonkar9207 True. However, I wasn't really talking regarding the economies of scale. There was a recent rumour that intel has secured a majority of the production capacity of TSMC. Ang given the tight schedule they could've only made incremental design than a radical change. There was another rumor that Apple has reportedly forecasted an increase in iPhone sales so they started production early which wouldn't have given them enough time to properly redesign a next-gen core. TBH this one seems unlikely as knowing apple, my gut feel is they went for efficiency rather than performance knowing that the competition is way behind.

Probably the main reason why they are not really pushing the CPU performance further, because the N5P vs N5 at TSMC gives them 10% less power consumption too, so in overall it will generate less heat in lower models, and they have the extra heat capacity for the 5th GPU core if needed.

It seems that Apple concentrated on the other areas of the chip this year. I suspect that next year, on the newer 4nm process, we’ll see a greater increase in CPU and GPU performance again. Remember that Apple hasn’t increased the performance of the Neural engine in years. This year they did, along with improvements in the other areas, such as the ISP, etc. But when you say that performance took a nosedive in the beginning of the video, it’s deceptive, and leads to confusion. You then have to dig yourself out of it. At any rate, we really do have to wait until Anandtech, and to a lessor extent, ArsTechnica, do their testing.

With “leaked” benchmarks out and knowing how apple followed the same formula for those who remember the iPhone 12 keynote; my bet is there is a 20 to 25% increase in the A15 GPU and 15% increase in CPU for the iPhone 13 Pro (max). I do believe the iPhone 13 will be practically the same in GPU as the iPhone 12 with maybe a slight edge 5% due to its 4 cores. Just for reference, the iPhone 12 scored a GPU score of 146 peak performance FPS in the Manhattan 3.1 test while the A15 scores a peak performance of 198 FPS. The A14 throttles down to a 119 score and the A15 throttles down between 140 and 150 FPS; which is still relatively higher than A14 peak GPU performance! However, I will know for sure after I do my own testing for both devices.

I'm only going on youtube videos and lex friedman interviews here, but that's the first time I've heard 2 years given as the zero-to-market time for cpu/SoC design. I've mostly heard 4 years. Given Williams left Apple at the end of March 2019, is 18 months enough time for his leaving to have had any impact on the A15?

I think you’re close, but wrong on the performance. I suspect the individual CPU cores and GPU cores are probably tweaked version, but not significantly changed. Any speed increases are likely due to clock speed improvements. I also believe you’re largely correct about the reasons for those barely changing, personnel changes and a focus on the ARM v9 architecture. IIRC, they did bump the cache size, which will help some real world workloads. They also improved the Neural Engine significantly, so anything that benefits from it will see performance boosts. While they didn’t specifically claim the CPU/GPU is more power efficient, I would expect there are some improvements there which contribute to the improved battery life claims, along with the OS tweaks and batter capacity improvements that they did mention. Those are my thoughts. We should know more in a month or so to see if any of this is correct.

A 2.5 hr increase in battery life for the 13 Pro Max vs 12 Pro Max would suggest a dramatic increase in the power efficiency of the A15, even considering the slightly large battery. But yeah, we can only know for sure after the actual physical units are out in the wild.
@ikjadoon
@ikjadoon 2 роки тому
@@tabularasa9554 CPU efficiency is not very relevant for Apple's battery life claims, which all revolve around video / audio playback (which is offloaded). Apple battery life is more dependent on display / network / decoder efficiency, not CPU efficiency. The leap is massive this year, for example, in video playback streamed: 25 hours on the 13 Pro Max vs 12 hours on the 12 Pro Max.
@geoffstrickler
@geoffstrickler 2 роки тому
@@ikjadoon as I said, I don’t expect much CPU performance boost, although I do expect to see perhaps ~10% due to a possible clock speed bump, bigger cache, and less speed throttling due to power efficiency gains. Nothing drastic. Some of the speed gains might come in multi-core performance as the efficiency cores might be able to run a bit faster due to efficiency gains. But aside from the extra GPU core on the Pro models, the things likely to see the biggest performance gains are things that heavily use the Neural Engine as that’s the only part that looks to have gotten any significant performance bump.
@ikjadoon

@@geoffstrickler Sure, we agree. We haven't seen "drastic" CPU performance increases in a single generation by any CPU manufacturer in 4+ years (Bulldozer -> Zen; Prescott -> Conroe), so "drastic" has never been the expectation. Apple certainly has never shipped a drastic improvement in a single generation (maybe A8 -> A9 w/ 29% IPC uplift). Here’s my analysis : The A14 in my iPhone 12 Pro Max consistently scores about 1600 in single core (Geekbench 5) and 4300 in multicore, which is miles ahead the fastest available Android SoC. Apple is indeed still at least two years ahead of the competition when it comes to performance. The A15 isn’t a whole lot faster than the A14, but it is a much power efficient chip (heats considerably less), which is a big problem on the iPhone 12 series. I’ve had an 11 Pro Max which had little to no thermal throttling (used to play Genshin impact on ultra settings) and not once the phone’s screen dimmed or performance plummeted. My current 12 Pro Max, however, throttles like crazy after about 10 mins of gameplay, and the display dims itself every single time. I wouldn’t mind having little to no performance increase on the A15 if this chip is as power efficient as the A13 from 2019. I’d take consistency over peak performance any time.

Love your channel Gary, but I think with one you are missing a very important piece. The pandemic has obviously hit companies harder than people realize. Not only in terms of usual parts and work, but also in internal team collaborations and their efficiency to advance products. Which is incredibly important in developing next generation chips and increasing performance year over year. They have been on it each and every year, so it makes sense why we are now starting to see signs of damage that the pandemic has done. Apple isn’t immune from these massive ripples of industry disruption. Yes, they have purchased large swaths of chips in advance, but that won’t save them from lacking performance increases because of these factors. It seems across the board at Apple and every other tech giant, that some kind of progress has been stunted. Some worse than others of course. If that is the case, we should see Qualcomm lagging as well, unless they somehow overcame the pandemic related team issues early on. I do think the talent that has departed has made a difference, but I also think that Apple was ready at least for some of them. So it isn’t the whole picture. Next year will be very telling indeed, to see where we are at with all of these companies and their performance. Thanks for your continuing these great conversations.

Here Apple-users are expecting Apple-CPUs to leapfrog all competition on the desktop market... and I'm always the rational voice (and Windows user) trying to ground them. The M1 is an impressive chip esp. regarding efficiency... but it's not the "multiple times better than anything else on the planet"-hype-thing marketing blew it up to be... And Intel was already kicked awake by AMD the year before... it's a huge company with many smart people... the upcoming Alder Lake really looks interesting and could be something really innovative... Very good analysis. Although I personally don‘t think Apple has stumbled. I‘m excited to see actual comparisons to find out for sure, but what I think right now is that Apple just isn‘t bothered about those improvement numbers anymore, partly because they might seem small percentage wise while still being significant in real world, and partly because, as we‘ve seen with the M1, the hype really happens once people see the results and are either impressed or not. Also: considering that there are tons of co-processors in those chips these days that hugely affect overall performance, a chip can get much faster without any CPU and GPU improvements. Combine a few co-processor improvements with slight CPU & GPU improvements and you‘ve got yourself really decent, maybe even impressive real world improvements. Overall I‘m liking the changes in the industry. New companies designing chips for more competition, ARM getting into servers more frequently, risks being taken (for example: will Nuvia succeed, considering companies like Amazon already using their own ARM chips?). I‘ll be an exciting few years.

I think it would be fairer to say "Apple may have stumbled" rather than saying that they have, as you really don't know - this is all supposition. My hunch is they have put all the effort in the M1X/M2 or whatever they are going to call it, so the MB Pro 14/16 will be able to be special from the get-go. By the end of October we will know :-)

Could apple be beginning a 2 year alternate cycle? Let’s say they focus on big GPU upgrades this year. So in 2022, they’ll focus on big cpu upgrades. Then in 2023, again GPU upgrades and so on. As I understand it, apple had to make a choice to focus on GPU this year for two reasons : 1. Feeling the heat from Exynos tieup with AMD (it uses underclocked version of same GPU in the steam deck) 2. The need for supporting 120hz universally on every game and app possible. A lot of those mid range androids actually don’t have gpus good enough for using 120hz on anything more than scrolling or light gaming like altos oddyssey For heavier titles like pubg mobile, they struggle with even 60 FPS at ultra. Apple wants each game on App Store which supports 120Hz to work flawlessly on iPhone 13 models. Unlike the iPad Pro with X variant of A series chips, which was the only device with 120Hz until yesterday, iPhones always had about half the GPU cores as the iPad Pro from same year. Now that both have 120hz, it has become a necessity to give better GPU for good performance on 120hz I’m also kinda curious if A15 has Hardware accelerated Raytracing and Variable rate shading support though.

We still don't know if the exynos uses the same gpu as the steam deck

@shresthsonkar9207 2 роки тому
@@DrAdityaReddy notebookcheck reportedly said this. However the steam deck has more cores than there will be in the Exynos. Likely also clocked lower. And built on Samsung 5nm instead of TSMC 7nm like present AMD APUs are.

Many of the midrange androids have Snapdragon 870 in them so your argument is completely trashed and many game's on playstore supports 120 fps so get your facts right before writing bs. 870 runs Genshin Impact with consistent smooth performance, even iphone 12 can't do that.

Since the iPhone 13 is already out. How’s your prediction/reaction to A15 performance vs to whats out there?
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
Nothing changed really. I say in the video that there is likely going to be a 5 to 10% CPU increase based on Apple's claim that it is 50% faster than the competition. To quote me at 06:13, "we will expect the A15 to be better in benchmarks." Which it is.

@@bombbossgaming3408 you do realize that’s cpu improvement correct? And i am talking about gpu in my comment, the results are A15 beats almost every phone’s chipset out there running on low performance mode while consuming half of all competitor’s chipset wattage let that sink in for a second
