On the drone, back in the day when I used to build them, if they got wet, fully drying it out (silica packs or rice) often worked so long as you don't try turning it on while it's wet. I'm guessing it's a bit late now, but could be worth a try. Great video as always, sorry you lost a drone through!

This brings testing equipment to a whole new level - well done! I mean, sticking an Airtag, mini bike and camera on top of a DJI Mini and flying it over water takes quite some guts! Almost forgot this channel is mainly about cycling....

Further on the drone taking a drink: It has occurred before with the Mini. It's documented on their forums too. It was on the latest firmware, so I have no idea why it takes a dive. It became a little unstable a few seconds prior to heading down..... maybe it was just overloaded? *shrug*... The other issue was the 30m altitude/50m distance limitation as I wasn't logged into the DJI app. Once the GPS lock updated the 'home' location 200-300m(?) from me you can see it start the 50m count. I should have logged in and waited a little longer before hitting 'go'. Lessons learned from today..... in an expensive way. 🤣

Do you have the DJI care refresh? I think as long as you have the Drone, they replace it in case of accidental damage (clearly it was 😅🙈)

Hey mate, idk if you checked, you can check last known location of the drone in the DJI app. Use that to navigate.

Glad you found the drone Shane! Good thing you had that screen recording going. Sorry that Mavic Air 2 is acting up. I'm installing a few of these air tags on bikes as per the suggestion from some of your previous videos. Have you tested the tags in a stems of different materials? Obviously, that scummy water isn't an ideal material to transmit bluetooth signals? As for these delays in push notification, I'd expect a variety of different delays due to cellular traffic and the way in which the information is networked from the phone reporting distance and the push notification service. So the time of notification is probably pretty random. 🤷🏻♂️ Tragedies like this always make for interesting videos. Hope the drone somehow comes back to life or is covered by DJI warranty. 👍🏻

Good fly... The problem with Airtag is that this is cloud based. So you need others with IPhone in the vicinity to work well. It is good at the city, where you have people with phones. You can find your bike then. In open area like this, this alert would be more random. Plus no chance to localize bike... unless you are lucky to be in 30m range. Plus - in some countries people have to agree to be the part of this cloud. As this include location service. Good luck with the drone.

That was pretty brave, a few things though : - the DJI app has a "find my drone" feature that uses the last know coordinates, that would have likely helped - am I missing something or were you expecting Apple to be able to update the AirTag's position on the top of a drone since it relies on communicating with iOS devices ?

- I found that feature in the app after I found the drone. It would have come in handy! - Test 3 was a separation test, not a location update test (which will need to be in range of an iDevice for an update).

@@gplama what happens when a Air Tag leaves you and is with/near another iDevice, does that change the outcome at all? On a separate note I accidentally dropped my keys on a walk to the shop yesterday and was able to easily recover them because of Air Tag, I know that’s the point but it’s my first real world experience since getting some other than playing around in the find my app. In a previous life they’d probably never have seen again.

@@timbob. No change. I had Mrs Lama drive off with one (she has an iPhone). I waited 5-10mins. No alerts while I was standing on the side of the road. I could however see its new location with the Find My app though. That was a few weeks back with an earlier version of IOS15. I suspect it'll remain the same functionality with the final/public release (which I was using in this video). Nice work on finding your keys too!

The AirTag was mounted to the drone with double sided tape. The detection is based on what iPhone/iDevice is nearby.

Given that a stolen bike could be in someone’s garage or well hidden, would you still recommend them to locate a stolen bike?

If you know it's hidden in someone's garage that's a great outcome. You know where it is and can decide how to proceed.

I’ve been using iOS 15 since beta 1, so been having these notifications since June/July? I do think these are time based. If you were walking, you’d get these notifications much sooner. I guess there’s a polling interval here and if you happen to be at the edge of this, you’ll get a high degree of variability. You’re a sample size of 1 and you’ve done a couple of tests. I’m constantly being spanned by these notifications because I’ve left my door keys in the car when I pop into the supermarket. YMMV!

I have had a lot more success with the alerts when leaving things at home (with no exception zone enabled). I'd have loved to see these alerts for when the AirTag moves away too. I can only assume it's due to the iDevice polling location and doing checks as it's moving, whereas when an AirTag moves away there's no (easy) way of knowing it has moved other than no signal from it (a likely scenario in a big house). Other testing of having the AirTag move away with another iPhone updating its location still didn't result in any alerts. Hmm.... I still love Airtags though. :)

I didn't quite understand; what actually caused the drone to drop out of the sky? You hinted this is known to happen from time to time with this model? For someone like me that is looking to possibly invest in one just like that, I'd really like to know.

There’s no flight logs either…. So I can’t do any review of what happened. Maybe because I wasn’t logged into the app. I’ll be sure to set things up better next time.

This functionality needs to work in isolation. Between the owner and the tag only. It’s an epic technical fail if this isn’t the case.

Drone was in beginners mode, no account. Litteraly a red flag on screen. That’s why it was 50 meters only. But you sticking on so much stuff and not seeing it dive was hard to watch. Should have put it in sport and up up up… but hey you learned a lesson

The way Air Tags work is by pinging off other nearby phones

This separation test isn't about location updates and pinging other iPhones. (I've done a few other videos/tests regarding this). This 'Notify if left behind' needs to work in isolation to be of any use. It does when leaving an item/tag behind. It doesn't work when a tag leaves you behind... and yes, even when the tag pings off other idevices and has its location updated.
