Apple watch saved my life! On Labor Day 2020 I was feeling lightheaded towards the end of the day and took an EKG on the watch and discovered that not only was I in A-fib, I would flip into a first degree block as well. My EKG a few weeks earlier had been normal. Without the AppleWatch, I would never sought treatment and would have just assumed I was tired. I spent a week in the ICU and am now on antiarrhythmics. The fitness features on the watch have been invaluable in monitoring my heart rate during my recovery and cardiac rehab.

Hi Bernie - First, I’m glad you’re doing ok. My question to you - how do you detect heart block? I have diagnosed 2nd degree AV Block and have a pacemaker IN my heart (The Micra). I have gotten one A-fib reading so far. Only had the watch one day. I’m also wearing a cardiac monitor for 2 weeks. Thanks and I hope you recover quickly!
@xenrin
@xenrin 2 роки тому
Heart blocks are delays between the two pacemakers in your heart - the upper chambers (Atrial) and the lower (ventricular). A first degree block in an EKG shows as a longer interval between the two pacemakers - in an EKG the first small hump in the strip is a p-wave, followed by the larger wave (QRS). In a normal rhythm (called a sinus rhythm) these two are a specific (time) distance from each other. A longer interval is a first degree block. Second degree blocks are a little more complicated as there are two types. In a classical second degree the p-wave fires multiple times before the ventricles fire. (You see multiple p-waves in an EKG,) in the other type, the interval between the first p wave and the QRS gets longer per beat, and then drops. Blocks are hard to detect accurately on an Apple Watch as you don’t have a proper grid to measure the intervals unless you have a trained eye, but you can see them. A 12 lead ekg from your doctor is always the definitive diagnosis.

OK. I think most of us would know that a $500 Apple Watch isn't going to be as accurate as a $5000 purpose-built medical ECG or other monitoring unit. However, I'd much rather have some idea of what my heart-rate, blood oxygen level, calories burnt, etc. than have no idea at all plus all the other functions I have in the small device I can strap to my wrist. Decided to get one to assist in my health and fitness drive and glad that I did.

I am about to be living independently and solo travelling, so walking into a hospital for check ups might not be high on my priority list. Recently, my dad’s dr told him that his heart complication is inherited and there’s a 35% chance that it could have been passed down to us (his children). I do use the inhaler like… once a year n had used the nebuliser once before due to my shortness of breath but was never diagnosed with asthma. Though I’d like to save money and get SE, I am starting to think the Series 6 might be worth it… This video helped me make that decision.

Are there any Doctors that have experience of this type of arrythmia with this watch, would this watch constantly pester me about this even though its normal for me because that would drive me nuts and cause anxiety and in turn more ectopics and ocd ecg/ekg checking or does it focus more on AF? Also I ride a motorcycle which can be exhilirating and adrenaline fueled, would the accelrometer and pulse measurmnts go nuts and start calling 999 emergency. I'd like clarify these queries before purchase.

I have had 2 occasions to wear a doctor prescribed electrocardiogram monitoring device. One time my cardio specialist called me to ask "Mr. M, what's going on with your heart?". The monitor picked up the abnormal readings which were then sent to my doctor via the link in the cellphone app which prompted the call. I do not believe this would be the case with the ECG feature on the Apple watch. I have a Kardia EKG device which is similar to Apple's ECG. According to my doctor, those devices only take a snapshot of the current condition, whereas the prescribed electrocardiogram monitoring device takes a continuous reading as long as you are wearing it. That is what the doctor wants to see. Sometimes you may have an event and not even realize it. I would give any Apple watch with the ECG feature a hard look. Is it worth it? I don't think it would notify my doctor automatically, and I already have the Kardia device which can do the same as Apple's ECG feature. But then, it would only be a snapshot, not a movie. I would me more interested in the A fib Detection feature, that looks like it's continuous monitoring. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

The app will only provide occasional random readings during sleep. That really thwarts getting consistent and frequent enough ox readings when a CPAP machine is detecting so-called "events" of hypopnea. There will always be unknowns, but here’s my view. I flew a military aircraft that transmitted sufficient electromagnetic radiation to generate voltage that would spark between steel surfaces separated by 1/4 inch in the cockpit. I later worked in the radiation oncology industry. I have a year of engineering physics and a year of engineering chemistry, three degrees and years of working with both radiation physicists and radiation oncologists. I am not worried about the biological effects of our environmental electronics or high voltage wires. None of these sources of EMF generate ionizing radiation (energy sufficient to displace electrons or other nucleons). The magnetic fields generated by these currents are minuscule. Airborne particulates are a much greater risk and many pay a premium to directly inhale them, but then ignore the inverse square law, first ionization energy, and the consensus of our scientists and physicians.
@IronCan88

@@ryanwest4197 with radiation it doesn't matter if there's direct skin contact. Also when you talk on your phone you are holding it much closer to your brain, the most important part of your body. If you are still using your cellphone, then you should not be concerned about wearing a smart watch. And even if you are still concerned, you can wear one without cellular function to lower the radiation.

I don’t know why you can’t have your blood 02 heckled if your under 18 years old too. I recommend changing your birthday if that’s possible to do.

It’s scary seeing doctors recommending Apple Watch for pulse oximeter. I am recovering from acute respiratory failure from covid. I did a comparison from my finger and when my finger was reading 74 my Apple Watch is reading 91. If I had this watch when I first got covid, I would have read my oxygen from my watch and say I’m good and continue to decline. If I had trusted this watch I would not be here today writing this comment and would be dead at 39 as when I went to er they said if I get any worse I would not make it.

Is there a feature to say wake you up after you have sleep enough? say for someone like a musician that is flexible to wake up whenever they’re like but can be in bed late & could sleep too much if not woke ?

Apple watch is the most useful product I have ever purchased. I never knew that my oxygen levels dropped below 85% during sleep. My HRV is also low for my age and during sleep it falls below 20 ms. I have been living a sedentary life mostly.

You need to see a doctor if your heart drops below 20 at night, it really shouldn’t go below 40.

Warning; obsessing about your health is bad for your health. :)
@fancifulfox3940

Well, it depends. Yes obsessing over it is bad, but having a look out is always good, I have pots and my heartrate goes really high and it’s good to know what it’s doing to present to disbelieving doctors. I don’t think wanting to know a bit more is obsession though.
@GS-xg4nz

@@fancifulfox3940 I don’t know what ‘pots’ is. How would you have handled it if there were no smart devices? Why are your doctors disbelieving?
@fancifulfox3940
@fancifulfox3940 3 роки тому
@@GS-xg4nz PoTS, otherwise known as Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, is a disorder characterized by orthostatic intolerance, a condition that often causes multiple symptoms, especially when standing for a long time. When a person with POTS stands up, there is a significant increase in the heart rate above the normal rate and the heart rate stays elevated longer than usual. This heart rate response is key to diagnosing POTS. With position changes, blood pressure may fall, stay the same or increase. (Copied and pasted from google because of fatigue) The doctors tend to take a long time diagnosing this, and tend to say it’s all in your head until proven otherwise. Even when you have the diagnosis, drs don’t really seem to get how bad it gets sometimes. Without smart devices available to the average consumer, I would have had to spend a lot more time in hospital while they had to run several tests. Each of which are causing tiredness over the fatigue that already comes as a side effect with pots. Again, obsessing over it is never good, and I agree fully with what you said there, apart from the fact it sounded like it could be bad for people to get these devices. I won’t reply to this thread after this, as I’m tired with my 4 chronic illnesses. Have a good day/morning/night.

Please be aware! These watches(Apple, Garmin, Polar etc.) are not proved to produce accurate readings by FDA neither for Pulse O2 nor EKG (ECG). Not even for their heart rate readings!!! Also apple watch can not measure pulse O2 unless you keep your hand straight and steady for 15 secs. This is NOT a medical device to monitor sleep apnea. Every athlete knows that for a better reading of a simple heart rate they should use a chest band monitor. I have used and tested Apple, Garmin, Samsung and Xiaomi smart watches extensively. Just to give you an example of how wrong these gadgets are: my Garmin fenix 6 gives me an average PO2 of 92% during the day and 90% during the night which is way of in comparison to B.Braun FDA approved fingertip Pulse SPO2. I am just not sure why someone who claims to be a certified physician would publish such a review.
