Summary :
When it comes to the best of the best tarps, the one company that comes to mind is Aqua Quest; they offer top shelf tarps and if you want the best of the best you will have to pay for it. Without a doubt you can find tarps of the same size for less and I have reviewed many and recommend many and with the Aqua Quest Guide, I recommend it as well.
If you are seeking a best of quality tarp that features excellent build quality this is what I would suggest.
Also, the overall weight of these tarps is very good especially when compared to some of Aqua Quests heavy duty tarps.
Speaking of durability, if you follow the channel and have seen all of my adventures, then you have seen this tarp go through some pretty wicked storms and never has it let me down. It is strong and has withstood strong 30mph winds with no problems.

Aquaquest should make a mil-spec poncho. That would be awesome.
@charliemcdowell5231
@charliemcdowell5231 2 роки тому
Would be interesting to see, but given their reputation I don’t think they would want to lower the quality. Usually milspec gear (at least US milspec) gets its durability from weight and not from ingenuity/build quality. Don’t get me wrong I’m a sucker for military surplus bc it’s cool, but in the modern day military gear is usually a downgrade from its civilian counterparts (with a few exceptions like when you go SO cheap that the civilian version is trash)
@azhomeboy2000

Had this tarp for about 7 years. It was amazing. Had it in my bushcraft pack the whole time, using it anywhere from 10-20 weekends a year with my hammock. It never once tore. It really is pretty strong. It didn't leak until year 5. Even then it just needed to have a waterproof sealant put on it, which is about $8. But I was moving and getting rid of stuff so I took it to the thrift store. I should have kept it. Anyways, I'm going to buy another one. I highly recommend. He did a great review! I'd take his word for it. If you can afford it, or save up for a few months, it will be well worth your money.

Thanks Luke, your review confirms my experience with Aquaquest tarps. I have two 10x10. One defender, one safari. The defender is used car camping and it is kind of a blockhaus, the safari is used for tarp camping with a mosquito net to protect me from bugs.

Luke, I absolutely agree with you. I’m a tarp guy. I bought one Aquaquest, was happy with it, then bought the second. I’m happy with both, different sizes for different jobs. I was a little sceptical at first; but, after multiple uses, they have turned out pretty good. I like the multiple, sewn tie points and strength/weight. I didn’t get the heavy duty. The light ones, for truck camping, are fine. I take ultralight dynema for hiking. It’s good too. Thanks for the review. Texas

I think the 10 x 10 (3m x 3m) is the ideal size for the solo (or cozy duo) hiker. The square format also makes diamond configurations (like for a hammock) simpler. I am in total agreement with you on having tie-out loops - a grommet is just a hole waiting to become a tear!

Great tarp! I purchased one in olive drab color 10x10 size from Amazon. The quality is awesome. As I do with all of my tarps and tents, I seam sealed it with silicone seam sealer. I also put seam sealer on the threads around the tie off points, to protect them from abrasion. This is the perfect replacement for my aging 10x12 sil-nylon tarp that I bought from Campmor many years ago. Looking forward to getting it out and getting it wet!

I have the defender, love it, would not take it hiking if I could help it due to its weight but it is awesome when car camping. As for the Guide, I want one of these and most likely will buy one this summer for hiking trips, you are right about the tie-outs, having multiple tie-out choices is huge when setting up a tarp. I have the added bonus of their head office and store being a few towns over from me here on Vancouver Island. Yes they are expensive but the quality you receive is worth it. No ripping of the fabric unless you do something really dumb, no grommets that will rip out on you if you just look at them wrong, multiple useful tie-outs, taped seams...

I've got the same tarp but 10x13 and it also comes in Olive drab not just the bright green. Haven't used it enough yet but it's definitely good quality - very strong tie-outs, set it up taut in some strong wind and it easily handled it with very little stretch... hasn't really gotten wet yet, mostly used as a windblock so far.

Great video Luke, I plan getting the 10x7, I have the Tarra and it's heavy and not good for warmer weather so if camped above the tree line not much of a breeze that tent becomes an oven! so creating shade goes a long way to help cool the tent.

I've had this tarp a little over a year and its excellent! Kids and I like pitching in different configurations and camping under it. Will say that it does take a while to dry out we've noticed and the texture is a bit "rubbery" but overall its worth the money. With that being said we have also tried the Free Soldier line of tarps at just under half the cost and it has also performed equally as well, plus dries quicker

The 10x10 Guide is also available in Olive (mine) and Gray. It’s absolutely excellent for packing in with a Ionosphere or similar bivy style shelter to avoid being trapped in a tiny tent during rain (add a Helinox chair for a nice little 3lb porch setup) I also have their 10x13 Safari, its equally great, more stealthy in camo, but its nearly twice as heavy as the Guide and is better suited for two people with a 2 or 3p Nemo Dagger (for example) split between 2 packs. Tarps are kinda heavy no matter what, but over the years I’ve found good one’s to be well worth their weight when it matters most, even for sun shade in the best of weather.

Luke, I really enjoy your videos because you hold nothing back and are honest about products you review. Not that I'm the end all say all when it comes to tarps, but I fell your review is spot on here. I have two Aquaquest defender tarps, both are the 10 x 13, one is in camo and the other is OD green. I know they are heavy, and I know a 20,000 hydrostatic head waterproof rating may be a bit overkill but I was looking for the most bomb proof tarp I could find without the weight of an oil skin tarp. I also have a DD tarp for a lighter weight option as well as some cheaper tarps. In hindsight, I probably should have just gotten an Aquaquest Guide or Safari tarp instead. I'm not saying DD tarps are bad, but they just don't compare to Aquaquest. If I recall, the main reason I went with a DD tarp instead of a Guide series tarp from Aquaquest was the color. If they had offered it in more of a muted color, I probably would have gone with it. I may end up picking up a Safari series tarp for a mid weight option since they do come in OD. Yep, they're a bit costly but they're worth every penny, plus I don't mind supporting our Canadian friends to the north.

I saved up a while ago and bought this tarp on your recommendation, and coming back to this video again to confirm what kinda tarp poles those were. I've recently gotten more interested in camping, and a few months back a friend and I decided to pull the trigger on going camping. nothing major, just an over-nighter at a camp ground. we're both sorta green, after all well neither one of us thought to check what the weather would be like (rookie mistake) and sure enough, it rained the whole time. I'd initially brought the tarp along as shade from the sun, but it and the big spool of paracord I'd brought ended up being the saving grace and MVP of the whole trip; it was the only piece of equipment that worked the way it was supposed to. the charcoal wouldn't light so the grill was a wash, the tents leaked, and my improvised bedding did nothing for the big tree root stuck smack dab in the middle of the tent that had me sleeping with my stomach higher than my mouth; ended up being the worst night of sleep I've ever had, and I've slept on government beds before. but hey, our dinner table was dry the whole night! and first chance I got, I found a good quality camping cot and snagged it up :P

If you're rigging a tarp from a ridgeline that extra attachment point in the middle is very nice. Takes most of the sag out of the set-up. Just ordered one of these.

I bought a Kalinco 10x15 Tarp on Amazon and It has survived 30mph winds here in Kansas. $37 and no leaks. I doubt it is the same quality as the one you showed here but I do not go camping as much as you. This one has been alright for me

That’s awesome! I think you should check out the DD Hammock line of tarps though, their super light range is legit. I own several of their multicam and super light products.

I'm sold 😎. I'll probably buy one now 💵😁. It's a shame that this channel doesn't have at least one million subs yet 😠😡.

I have a Aquaquest defender, safari and guide tarp and can say without a doubt they will all give you your money’s worth depending on how much weight you want to carry. Life time warranty says it all. #1 in my opinion.

Nice job Luke.. Size's-vrs- Weight-vrs- Pice, you can use one of these tarps NUMEROUS ways. With the right ingenuity one could attach one of these to a vehicle or teardrop/camper easily.. Those others contained tarps, while convenient are heavy, expensive and size limiting.. I just may have to add one of these to my want list 😉!..

I own the 10 x 13 guide tarp. I don't get out as often as Luke but have used it a couple of times and it is an excellent tarp. I bought it in 2020. They had run out of them and if you ordered it a month out they sold it for $99 including shipping on Amazon. If you backpack I would think about the 10 x 10. The 10 x 13 is 1.7lbs. That may not seen like much but as you know everything adds up in your pack.
