What looks like an Arduino Mega, works like an Arduino Portenta (but costs a lot less), and has a ton of exciting new features? It’s the Arduino GIGI R1 WiFi, the newest microcontroller board from Arduino.
This beast may look like a Mega 2560, but that’s where the resemblance ends. The GIGA has even more I/O ports, 76 of them. It has an integrated Real Time Clock, 16-bit Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs), 12-bit Digital to Analog Converters (DACs), and CANBUS connections. It also has a USB-A connector that you can use with a keyboard, mouse, or USB storage device.
Its STM32H747XI microcontroller has two powerful high-speed cores, and you can even run a MicroPython program in one core and an Arduino C++ program in the other. The GIGA has a Murata LBEE5KL1DX-883 radio module for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communication.

While the hardware for the GIGA is nothing short of amazing, the software is currently in development. I had many issues getting it all to work. I’ll show you how to resolve these issues if you encounter them.
But software issues aside, this powerful microcontroller board will find many great applications in robotics, process control, and IoT (it’s ready for the Arduino IoT Cloud).

I have arduino nema 17 stepper motor automatic blinds in my house lol. I was going down the pico w route but this arduino might bring me back. I do prefer arduino. Us old people have an advantage over young people as we had to program most of the time.

Im not a retirement fund kid so I got to be really careful with my fixed income... No offense... Just saying I can't afford a selection.. What I want to ask is, can one of these emulate the others? Which one is the most flexible? Especially if I want to use an os.. please don't say pi , too expensive now to get one, but I do want to run software meant for the pi...

Have seen these boards on the market as well as cost. Don't currently need the functionality as the ESP32 covers what I'm doing but it is always good to know what is available and information provided is extremely helpful for possible future projects. Thank you for "breaking the ice."

In Germany I‘m seeing prices ranging from about €70 to €85. These are very impressive specs for the Arduino family, but it‘s getting to where it‘s more like an SBC than a microcontroller board, both in terms of specs and price point.

@@Dronebotworkshop I became an "Electronics Junkie" sometime after I was born in 1958. I feel like saying, "You guys just don't know how blessed you are, with all the various toys"! My goodness. Before I came here, I was watching your video on the amazing Raspberry Pi Pico. They're so tiny and space-saving. When I was first learning in late 1970s, soldering up a kit like that could be messy & took up space..Be thankful, learn lots & enjoy what you've got...🇺🇸 😎👍☕

It's not worth the price but it is very cool. I'm in Canada as well. I got 2 teensy 4.1 boards with all the extra ram and such for cheaper. Order straight from pjrc

Hi Bill. Great video as usual. But at 45:20, in the “Read from USB Drive” section, your code seems to have gotten a little corrupted. Line 56 simply says “usb”, and I don’t see the “fread(f, …) line. Anyway, if I’m wrong, please correct me. 😊

10:05 The audio jack is actually TRRS, not TRS. Ie: Tip = Left; Ring1 = Right; Ring2 = Mic; Sleave = Ground, according to the schematic. That detail is significant because it means stereo out and mono audio in can be used at the same time. The Mic does not share a connection with one of the output channels. Regardless -- a nice overview of the board!

Jack on giga follows the OMTP standard. Sleeve is ground. Tip - DAC1 (left) Ring 1 - DAC0 (right) Ring 2 - A7 (mic) Sleeve - Ground

The STM32H747 has 3 x I2S ports and a I2S LP so you should be able to do audio through the proper I/O pins, assuming they are brought out.

Would love to see the giga doing something like a weather station. Using the DAC you could use Beamforming and filters for a solid state precipitation sensor. 350us is approx. the round trip time for quite a number of kilometer. Also using a parking sensor (4 waterproof ultrasonic sensors with the converter PCB) a ultrasonic anemometer could be used and calibrated. This is a bit complex; I find MATLAB has a number of videos to help with theory on radar, drones (and swarms) and filters to handle alot of the noise in the sensors. May be more of a video series than one video, but hey might be fun! You mentioned you could run a farm with the giga. Would love to see some form of video dedicated to that! (Myself thinking of vertical hydroponics with a rotating the column, ultrasonic vibration for pollination, maybe automatic drone(s) with cameras to check crops)

I worked a bit with stm32 chips and they're already more powerful than the old atmega chips older arduinos use. The STM32H7 series are a NASA grade F1 of their own.

Hi, African viewer here... I really thoroughly enjoy your videos, and I've learned so much. Thank you! I know you only/mostly work with DC, however, I've got an AC request... I inherited an oil bath from my father-in-law among other heavy duty tools, and although I like the fact it is a vintage, heavy-duty item that will do almost any job and last for generations, it bugs me no end that I'm not able to adjust the amperage to my liking. It's almost legendary in our town since it's welded a lot of the heavy industry's roofs, structures, the ships' hulls, the jetty, and other heavy metal welding- from a well-known boilermaker with a respected reputation, but... I'd like to make the old girl "mine" and personalize it to my liking. As you know- an oil welder has five or six "poles"- each with a different/set amperage, and one is the earth pole. So if you want 50A, you screw your electrode cable to the 50A pole. Then if you want 300A, you screw it onto the 300A pole etc... All this is tedious though, and there are times when I want 60A - 90A for instance - and sometimes lower, but my only options are 50Amps or 100Amps and up to 350A. How can I add an amperage adjuster to this circuit? AC is high current, so I'm not familiar with a regulator/adjuster that one can use here. I won't be able to easily adjust the voltage in order to lower the amperage(or perhaps I can? Just the opposite...), because of the way transformers work, but adding a variable resistive component to the circuit should do the trick. Problem is, I don't know where to do this in the circuit and what component(s) I will need. I'm not familiar with AC resistive components.. Can you (or anyone else) please assist me with these questions, if possible? I'm sure there are countless nr of people with an oil bath that would love such a thing!

have you checked into variable inductance? Basically its an old core from a large transformer wound with a winding on the center leg and the frame is cut to make an E and an I (EI). The gap between the E and I is adjusted to vary the amperage flow. I made one for a large tesla coil and used #8 THHN at 220 winds for 240VAC at 60A

I also see there are plenty of welders with variable inductors and a few circuit diagrams, so a nice bit of reading up and then seeing an electrician to see how we can implement this. Pricing also doesn't look too bad. I've looked into Rheostats... and jeepers - those things are expensive! Thanks man.

FWIW I have used a Pi Pico W to do much of this, for ideas I looked at someone's remote control robot project. the Pico runs a webserver allowing remote control of a number of circuits.

@@g0fvt Nice! I have designs for ESP32 with one relay and one ammeter per feeding MQTT telemetry and subscribing to a channel for remote relay trigger. Was hoping to avoid 12v step down, but these are too expensive per board.

@@awksedgreep for many purposes some of these boards are far too powerful/expensive. I did have an Arduino doing some telemetry for me but that reported via USB to a Pi with Wifi which also provided power over USB. The Pi Pico W may interest you, better ADC resolution than the Arduino and of course it has Wifi. Very low current draw so easy to use a 5v series regulator...

Again, another fantastic video. Many thanks! The day I got my giga, I connected it to my Ubuntu machine, no luck. Got the dfu error. Switched to my mac, no luck. same/similar errors. I thought I had somehow killed it. I followed your steps today (Fixing Linux Error), again no luck with Ubuntu, but perfect on the Mac!?! Fine by me! Looking forward to how the Giga can be used! Another well thought out and produced video. A question for the compilation and upload times, are these as slow in Arduinio IDE as an ESP32? As these boards get faster and the code longer with more libuaries, a very long compliation and upload could be a big bug bear.

If the pinout is the same, hopefully the DIN rail mount for the Mega will work on this. If so, this GIGA is now a HUGE win for real deal automation. Sadly, it seems to be sold out at the Arduino store.

Is the reason for the commas in the IP address because of a European reversal of the comma and period? I know, for example, that the French and German locales use the comma for the decimal separator and the period for the thousands separator. It might be possible that changing the locale settings would change the IP address separators.

Thank you for another incredible video! A quick question: does the GIGA (or Portenta) offer functionality akin to ESP32 NOW for board to board Wi-Fi communication without the need for an isp provider? The application I have in mind is two or more drones (quads, fixed wing, etc.) communicating with each other. Thanks again! This is exciting stuff!

Because you mention the buck converter on the Arduino: I am used to transformers that the amperage is reduced when the voltage is transformed up and the amperage is increased when the voltage is transformed down. If I want to regulate a voltage of 12 volts /2 amps down to 5 volts, I have the question of whether a maximum of two amps can also flow on the output ( because the transformer does not supply more) or whether the theoretical amperage could increase to four or five amps because sufficient power is available - assuming sufficient power and cooling of the converter, of course. With a transformer, this would be terribly simple: yes. With these converters, I can only find the value for a maximum current load plus a margin for sufficient cooling. I would also be interested in the logic, operation and risks of combining power supplies into "redundant power supplies". Simply connecting two switched-mode power supplies together on the secondary side - it probably won't be that simple. Have you ever made a video on these topics? thanks in advance

59:28 - at the point you are making here is the Giga 4 or 5 times stronger than the esp32 board. That should be the consideration on weather or not it is actually too expensive... In my opinion...

Please show a project using the Arduno Pro Micro that shows how to blink the tx and rx LEDs sin e there is no pin 13 nor pin13 LED . I also need to know how to program it. With the NANO is very simple to program. Thank you great videos! I use the ArduinoDroid IDE.

I am surprised the GIGA reduces the number of PWM connections relative to Mega from 15 down to 12. I was hoping for more PWM connections.

I realized the date on the numbers.txt is a little off - 2097-12-31. How did that happen? As you mentioned FAT32 can't format over a certain size. Could it have something to do with that? Is it Linux you are using to read the stick? The octal permissions usually don't display on Windows machines. I don't know what Windows uses under the hood as to permissions (maybe hex), but it does not display octal. The board is pretty cool though! Your videos are so well researched, that is a full-time job in itself. I love watching your videos to give me a different take on how to use different electronic devices.

So it supports USB type A. Can you use it to read NVME- boards? I would love to use this in parallel with a Late Panda. I’m assuming this supports WiFi 6 as well

The VRTC pin is connected to VBAT on the STM32 chip, and according to its datasheet it supports 1.2-3.6V on that pin.

Hi, I am new to Arduino coding and building, so this might be a silly question.. but are there advantages or disadvantages of using a board that needs 3.3 V instead of 5 V? So far I've only worked with 5 V Arduino Micro. Greetings from Germany! :)

Thanks for the video sir .... Plz make a video on how to store the data received from Arduino (analog read data via Bluetooth) to a text file and store the text file in a shared folder like Documents folder of internal storage... I am trying for this but not successful...

Bill, I picked mine up on launch day. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it but I would like to take a stab at porting the Speeduino Engine management software to it.

This at 16:16 just caught my eye, and I have to ask - WHAT is the world coming to?!?!? Compilation of the Blink sketch reports: Sketch uses *109416 bytes* (5%) of program storage space ... and Global variables use *47520 bytes* (9%) of dynamic memory... It's the Blink sketch. The _BLINK_ sketch for Pete's sake! It includes no libraries, has a total (excluding comments) of 9 lines of code (2 of which are just closing brackets), and doesn't declare a single variable. The same sketch compiled for an Uno uses only 924 bytes (2%) of program storage space and 9 bytes of dynamic memory (which is reported as 0% of the available memory, because it works out as less than half a percent of the smaller total). Simply changing the board type increases the program size by a factor of more than 100, and RAM usage goes up by a *factor of more than 5,000* . I know there's always going to be some overhead for the Arduino environment, and I accept that it's going to be greater when there's a multi-core processor to deal with, but that's just offensively inefficient!

Even if it uses 3.3v, some of the stm gpios are 5V tolerant. I don't see this feature in the arduino datasheet, so you have to figure it out yourself which are those.

How can we use both SPI simultaneously in Arduino Giga R1 WiFi? Interfacing micro SD card and nRF24L01+ modules connected to SPI5 and SPI1 respectively. The SPI numbering is as per the specification sheet #2. The nRF24L01+ module sends the data from various sensors like GPS, heading, depth, etc. micro SD card module saves the data locally. Please share the Arduino code too. Thanks in advance.

does anyone know what version of bluetooth it uses? this can be quite important due to data speed/bandwidth , distance it can reach and power consumption efficiency, like 4.0 IIRC is like 10m range, while 5.2 can reach up to 30m distance, and I have used both on bluetooth earbuds and the 4.0 sounded like old timey radio, while switching dongles to the 5.0 alone (not gotten a 5. 2 unit yet) was almost as good a quality as DVD audio. massive difference there, and range too, though I did not get the 10 and 30m ranges it was definitely far greater distance with 5.0 than 4.0 units. this is not even something I can find in their datasheet from the arduino website for the giga.

(7:01) thank you for showing this! the not being supported yet fully is no big deal with my experience around arduino support, as I suspect like in the past they will not lag to long before full support is available. (ie I am more confident in how fast and how sure it will be than say the raspberry pi pico community due to past experience with both communities of the raspberry pi community and the arduino community of software development and kernels and such. not that I expect either to fail completely, just might take longer for PI to catch up to each new iteration of their microcontrollers especially if they are still trying to ensure their SBCs have their software support maintained :) something I would like to know but don't have time right now to finish listening in, is if this could be used by say retro pilot for self driving car development being it has cann bus availability, (not expecting it to be the computer to run things, but rather is it fast enough to respond between computer and input-output hardware to be able to react in a timely fashion, for road use, not that I am going to use it for a self driving car, but rather I want to get as close as possible to the latest self driving car hardware in drones that fly, for shorter range delivery of packages using cell data communication to manually control things, and want to be sure they can avoid issues and still make the journey across say cell data dead zones during its travel through canopy of forest and the like (gotta stay low enough to not be a danger to air planes and helicopters as well as avoiding squirrels and birds ect. :) will have to drop this on that community and ask them what they think (retropilot group, the more open community than comma.ai LOL
