You can use a 5v power supply and create a simple voltage divider with a diode/resistor circuit to have both 5v and 3.3v power from the same power supply source. This saves space, costs less, and should meet the spec of 2 different devices that require 2 different voltages from a single power supply. Great tutorial video and very interesting projects using Alexa. I've seen others using Alexa to control all kinds of things around the home. Very cool! Keep up the good work! Looking forward to more of your videos! Subbed!

Very nice video. The little block 110vac to 3.3vdc blocks work nice. I ended up using a cap across the output to smooth out some of the ripples that caused the ESP to malfunction. Keep broadcasting!!

I like how you are presenting and outlining the target destination of your designs. They may add to my ideas of what I want to accomplish. I chose the ESP8266 12E dev board as it will take serial in from the PC without the level shift and it will run from 9 to 12V supply and output 3.3V for devices that need it.

Thank you. You got me hooked as well. The device turns on/off perfectly by giving verbal commands to Alexa, however when I give a command to the Alexa App (the phone app), it turns off/on correctly for the first few seconds. If I wait long enough 2-3 seconds, the Alexa App does not get a response from the device and issues a "turn on" command by itself. I'm impressed that the device name gets updated to what I set in the esp8266-01 firmware.
@netmedias7657
@netmedias7657 6 років тому
Jeff Millington I am not sure what is the issue but when Alexa app is not responding can you control it with direct command?
@JeffMillington
@JeffMillington 6 років тому
Hi Nassir, See if this behaves the same for you as it does for me. 1) Using only the Alexa App (phone app), turn off a ESP8266-01 device. 2) Wait 3 seconds, mine turns on automatically eventhough the device is turned off. I see that it happens immediately after the Alexa App has a message near the top of the screen that the device is non-responsive. Thanks, Jeff
@JeffMillington
@JeffMillington 6 років тому
I see the same behavior with the NodeMcu (esp8266-12e). Both boards the ESP8266-01 and the ESP8266-12e do not have any pullup resistors. It is connected to 3.3v as you said in your video.
@JeffMillington
@JeffMillington 6 років тому
If I exit the phone Alexa App while the esp8266 device is turned off, it stays off. If I don't exit the phone Alexa App, it turns back on which I don't want to happen.

Great video! I am not sure if you started working on the thermostat yet but you could easily build your own. All you have to do is use your Arduino to take in temp and use RTC and 3 relays. If you open up your furnace and look for the terminal block with labels C R W G Y. Then to get heat put a jumper between R And W gets heat. R to G for Fan and R to G and Y for cooling. C is common, R being your power, G being Fan, Y being Your cooling. For cooling you also need the G so it puts your fan in to high speed so your A coil dose not freeze up. And your good to go

Netmedias One thing I should also mention is that one you want to start the A/C you should run a delay before it actually starts so you don't accidentally short cycle the compressor. The voltage is around 24v ac you can put a rectifier from R and C and then use a voltage regulator to power your project. Just be sure to keep it under 1.5 amps.

You do know they are the same thing - the module you have plugged in (ESP-01) just doesn't have the traces connected for the pinouts that the ESP-12E has... Worth knowing to keep pricing down. There are videos ad tutorial pages on the web for reflashing Sonoff devices with software like Nassir's. Their Alexa compatibility is done by routing commands through a central server where your devices have to be registered. Which adds another possible point of failure. And a loss of privacy. Not recommended for the conspiracy-minded, who might worry about the CIA or President Xi knowing whether your bedroom lights are on ;-)
@Fifury161
@Fifury161 6 років тому
The re-flashed Sonoff is a neater cheaper solution imho - privacy already compromised if you are using Alexa anyway (and are that conspiracy-minded). Just a suggestion...

But what is the purpose in pressing the Alexa button, telling it what to do instead of just pressing the button with label "turn light on" ? And FTDI FT232RL is not a progrmmmer it just converts RS232 signal to USB standard ;) I think that better solution would be to have some some kind of touch screen to control the system. If there is a noise or you have some talkative guests at your home I believe it will make a lot of misinterpretations of commands and every time you want to turn light on you also have to make a noise :D
@netmedias7657
@netmedias7657 6 років тому
You don't need to press any button to have Alexa Dot execute commands. I had to put it on the mute so it does not interrupts me when I say invocation word "Alexa". Lack of a better word, It is much easier to say "programmer" than "RS232 convertor". This helps to simplify the understanding. Please do let me know of better word instead of saying "RS232 converter" and I will use it. :-) This is work in progress and in the future tutorials you will see this coming together. I will be using Raspberry pi as a hub and will be able to control every device from phone, pc and Alexa/Google Home. Also plan to design a kill switch since Alexa and Google Home devices are always listing.
@ravm84
@ravm84 6 років тому
So if not muted it still can misinterpret the commands when you are talking to someone else:D I remember that there was some trick with voice control of X-BOX, some people used nicks for themselves which sounds like "turn xbox off", when competitors wanted to call them they turned xbox off :D. The project is nice but voice control is bad idea in my opinion since your hands are free and you are not doing any surgeon operation :D It is fancy but I am sure that most of people get tired of this after one week, and I am sure you have already noticed that is not so reliable and not comfortable. The easiest way is to use tablet which already has WiFi connection.

Amazon recently announced the Echo in India. As I understand, we are simulating a wemo switch with the sketch . Do we need to enable/add a skill to alexa for it to be able to find these devices ?

I have a nice little text-to-speech program called "pico2wave" on my Linux box. Does a good job of generating a pleasant, human-sounding voice. Alexa accepts commands from it, too. I see interesting possibilities for generating home automation commands as part of bash scripts ;-)

you might want to use an arduino yun or tian, they have wifi and storage, might jump start your automation. They also run python/Linux so code is easy. Form factor would be an issue I suspect.

Hi, Nassir. What version of Echo Dot are you using? There are reports that Amazon changed the discovery protocol with V2, and at least some WeMo spoof sketches (using fauxmo) stopped working. I just got my Dot, and have just started researching, so I don't know about the code you used yet. I'll give your code a try first, and let you know whether it works for me, but it'd be useful to know in advance whether I might have that problem. Thanks for doing these videos. I do a lot of skipping, since I'm not a beginner, but I have to compliment you on the fact that the parts I've watched are _really_ well done.

No, its not working in india, Device discover not able to finding the device, i am using a Indian version of Echo dot v2 and using ESP8266 12E together for this, So did their is any alternate procedure available, if so, can you able to explain that, And did Alexa search devices in local network or it search in cloud service(corresponds to the skill enabled) ?, thank you.
@rantalbott6963
@rantalbott6963 6 років тому
Okay, I ran the tests. No joy. There was a TP-Link HS105 bundled cheap with the Dot. Alexa didn't discover it until I enabled the TP-Link skill. I had both Nassir's code and the MJROBOT code I liked to earlier running on two ESP8266s. No discovery. I tried to enable the WeMo skill, but it wanted me to log in to a Belkin account I don't have. And probably would have asked about a device I don't own if I did (TP-Link made me register the HS105 on their system before their app would control it). I ran gssdp-discover on my Linux box. It saw Nassir's code, but not the MJROBOT code or the TP-Link. Tentative conclusion: Belkin and TP-Link are trying to defend against knock-offs y requiring registration, and authentication via skills with the new Echo Dot. And we're screwed unless someone writes a skill for spoofing devices.
@rantalbott6963
@rantalbott6963 6 років тому
UPDATE 28DEC17 Despite all the talk (literally) from the Dot saying it wasn't finding new devices, when I fired up the app on my tablet today, it said both Nassir's code (which I'd simplified by removing the groups) and the MJROBOT device were there. I'd reflashed the MJROBOT device to try something else, so it obviously didn't work ("Light one is not responding"), but Nassir's code did. I deleted "Light one" via the app, reflashed the D1 to the DJROBOT code, and told the Dot to do discovery. It said "I found one new", and stopped. The device wasn't discovered. But, when I did an add with the app on the tablet, it was. I did see a message flash by during the add about contacting Belkin, so it looks like Alexa is asking for "howto" information, and getting it. A couple of times Alexa took a while to turn the DJROBOT Led on or off, and I saw repeats of the commands in its debug log. And the app puts up a "Device is unresponsive" message when controlling it, even though it works (maybe it's not responding fast enough???). New conclusion. A lot less tentative: ;-) Nassir's code and the DJROBOT code *do* work with the US Dot V2, but confusingly. And the DJROBOT code looks like it _might_ be less reliable (needs more testing to see whether it's just my setup).

abeltcb make sure your ESP board is connected to your wi-fi router and have an IP address. Also this board works with 2.4 Ghz router only. Check the Arduino IDE serial output to make sure that it is connected to you wi-fi router.

Jonathan make sure your ESP board and Alexa device are connected to same wi-fi router, if this is the case then zip-up your code and upload it to one of the free file sharing site (Dropbox, MediaFire & 4Shared) and post the link here. I will test it and let you know.

+Jonathan S It should work fine for your board. I have 10 ESP8266 ESP-12E boards and I downloaded the code and retried it, and it is working fine for me. I posted a modified version of code on GitHub. Use that code, and once you give voice command to Alexa to “discover devices”, what do you see on serial output? Can you share the serial output? I will document the troubleshooting instructions on GitHub project soon. github.com/nassir-malik/IOT-ESP8266-Alexa_Automation
