Arm has announced not one, but two, new Cortex CPU designs: the Arm Cortex-A78 and the Arm Cortex-X1. The A78 is the expected roadmap CPU, whereas the X1 is a powerhouse surprise I wasn't expecting. Both CPU designs will appear in 5nm SoCs in 2021.
Correction: Obviously I meant 8MB of L3 Cache at 11:38 Sorry about that.

I can smell this X program is actually a Qualcomm request. They realize if they keep going at 20% performance increase pace per year, they won't be able to catch up with Apple's cores. Although overall performance Qualcomm often wins, but the gap in very specific single core performance is huge they need to bump higher than the normal YoY increase. Just my 2 cents.

Remember unless things have changed since SoftBank. as far as arm's bottom line goes, the same royalty is paid for each core sold regardless of licence type. Apple have an architectural licence , qualcom's build on cortex or Samsung's direct cortex A72 licence . If you manufacture a 64bit V8 core you pay a given number of pence /cents per core shipped.

I wonder why wont they just use octa core A78/A77 (highperf cores only) and ditch the A55. 2 cores in the ultra freq, 2 in the high freq, and 4 in the medium freq hertz. Put big battery. Put an elaborate cooling system and 6000mAh would suffice

@Mainyehc
@Mainyehc 3 роки тому
Or maybe, as Johannes Näsman said, it'll be useful for ARM desktops? Now that Apple has announced their transition to ARM-based Apple silicon, they will have to replace all Intel processors currently found on the iMac, the iMac Pro, the Mac mini and the Mac Pro… And even the processors found on the top-of-the-line small (13/14-inch) MacBook Pro and on the larger model (which should probably stay at 16'', as it was redesigned so recently) will be closer to desktop-class than those currently found on the iPad Pro models and the DTK, and likely to appear on future MacBook Airs and low-end MacBook Pros, so… yeah, some customization and optimization for performance over raw battery life and thinness is definitely in order.

The question would then be: "It would be nice to compare an all-Cortex-X1 Snapdragon 888 version to an all-Cortex A78 Snapdragon 888" Predictably the X1 version would defeat the A78, but have poorer battery life

The Snapdragon 810 that debuted in 2015 phones suffered from severe heating and frequent throttling that was so bad that older Snapdragon 801 and 805 phones often outperformed in under sustained loads. The reason given for that was Qualcomm needed a response to Apple's first to arrive 64 bit ARM chips, and their R&D hadn't brought forth a chip yet. So they adopted ARM's specs to avoid arriving late in the game. I doubt Qualcomm would make the same mistake twice.

I suspect we will see an ARM with tightly coupled GPU. Rendering video is being done on lower powered machines. Once someone starts watching video, the machine could shift to a mode where there there is just enough extra ARM performance to catch a user input etc. The rest of the cores could be depowered or declocked. While the video plays. If a game is being played then perhaps many cores fire up to handle the multiple threads.

Yeah, @TheFighter, The problem here is that Apple’s chips will also get better. By the time we see the X1 & A78 in actual products, Apple will also have released at least the A14 and A14X processors, and maybe even the A15, depending on how long it actually takes for CPU’s based on the Cortex A78 and X1 cores to reach the hands of consumers. Those will all be on 5nm as well. Apple has been a step ahead of everybody in the ARM core design area pretty much since the days of the A8 and A8X, and they have been extending that gap, not the other way around. @Z3U5 - Gary Explains is correct. Apple’s ARM license is an Architectural license. They currently design their SoC’s using their own custom CPU and GPU core designs with the ARM architecture, not using the Cortex core designs at all. I think the last time Apple used a Cortex core design in their SoC was the A5.
