The quality of acting is definitely limited when you have a terrible script thats as bad as the director. Sure, you must be the best actor in the world to make up for these issues in television, theater and film, but even that’s not enough to save someone’s career.

I feel like this plot point could have gone differently. Imagine this: Catherine slips the drugs into her food just so that she tests positive for drugs and she can retain guardianship rights. But Ashley slips into a coma. Catherine panics and calls the label/doctors who say “maybe there’s a solution” and convince Catherine to do the hologram thing. This way Catherine isn’t so cartoon villain and appears more cold opportunist.

JudyBudy Here’s what I think could have been more exciting- Catherine says the line ending with “you’d wind up in a chemical coma”. There’s a pause, a cut to Ashley. Cut back to Catherine opening the pill case to reveal it’s empty. Ashley realizes what she has done and collapses. Catherine sits back and sips her beer. I admit, it’s a very nit-picky minor critique, but that line was not necessary at all. It takes that small precious moment of “Omg I see what she did there! Wow!” away from the audience by explicitly stating it in the dialogue. This is a tiny example, but it’s representative of how the entire episode lacked suspense and trust in the audience to catch on to details. I just miss it when Black Mirror made its audience feel a bit more clever by not spelling things out for them. Both narrative and dialogue-wise

I was actually thinking the exact same thing. It was so unrealistic that the aunt would just straight up reveal her intentions like that. It seemed like the writers didn’t have a more creative way to reveal it. It would have felt way less contrived if they just showed the aunt putting the pills in the food without saying anything.

Impeccably bad, that is.
