@@SeanStrife yeah it certainly helps that it’s a peppy pop banger in its own right, miley’s husky almost growly “oh honey” is a sexy hook all on its own and it’s the first two words of the song! i think for a lot of the Gen X/early millennial alternative and grunge duders who make music artist fandom a big part of their identity, it’s not just “i’m a fan of this type of music” but also equally or perhaps more so “as opposed to THAT type of music which i hate”. they like churning dissonance and groaning male vocals about being a nasty piece of work, but almost more than that, they LOATHE upbeat melodic hooks and slickly produced, unnaturally perfected young female vocals abt being a cute lady whose having herself a nice dance. the really fun thing abt the “ambition and verve” line is how unlike the rest of the song, which is amusing in relation to the original precisely BECAUSE it’s totally believable as a pop hit, “I’m stoked on ambition and verve” is a sudden, outright cheeky wink that is flagrantly cringeworthy and reeks of corporate focusgrouping. The way the dated youth culture word “stoked” is separated from the deeply boomerpilled “verve” by the seemingly ageless capitalistic virtue of “ambition” is an a hugely transgressive middle finger to the ideals and values of the original song, it’s an intentionally horrible line but since it’s meant to be in the story and since the rewrite is so well formulated (thanks trent 😍) it ends up being absolutely hilarious. but it’s not the type of humor obsessively dogmatic purists can ever enjoy, so it’s guaranteed to cause a certain type of fan undue distress and that too is very funny
