A viewer asks: What would be your preference for a new ham: a Rigexpert AA-35 or AA-55 antenna analyzer. They are close in price, and I have a NanoVNA if I need a wider range. What are your thoughts?

The ability to hang the stick pro from the feedpoint many feet in the air, and get a true reading not obscured by coax is invaluable imo.

Regarding the 35: Can you set it to beep in real time so you can hear when it’s at the lowest SWR while you’re adjusting the antenna and the meter is at the far end of the cable at the transceiver?

The various RigExpert models have different features besides the highest available frequency. I have a AA230 zoom that has TDR and the ability to determine velocity factor etc. I also have a stick 500 for outdoor use as it has an E-Ink screen. It has mostly has the same features as the AA230 but no TDR. It is difficult to see differences as the RigExpert website is often incomplete in this regard. The AA230 has the most features but the Stick 500 is close behind. The AA 35 and AA55 are not particularly feature rich.

I think for the majority of hams, VSWR, impedance as Z = R + jX format, sweeps, bluetooth hookup, are plenty. i don't kneed a TDR.

@@Philip-KA4KOE This is of course you choice. TDR is actually rather useful. If you attach connectors incorrectly and there is a short, TDR will tell which end to reattach. If you have a piece of coax with a fault TDR will tell you where to look for the fault. Incidentally, measuring impedance at the antenna requires recalibrating the analyzer so as the reference point is at the antenna and not at the analyzer. The buyer of the analyzer should be aware of the differences between models and choose accordingly. Perhaps learning new things will open your horizons as well.
