I dont know about forming it into a lock id have to think about it more but one thing you could do is make the final part a key that you then use to open a lock

All tricks and all science is completely related to "MATH" numbers and the frequency of numbers, MATHEMATICAL sequence.. Thats what makes science in that category so interesting. Hope this helps

Piece construction was probably performed by a programmatic algorithm. I mean the creator definitely defined roughly what each shape would be, but using CAD software to split the final shape into 12 interlocking, identical pieces would be far easier than calculating it mathematically Especially because this pattern can be generalized to any number of pieces. The creator probably created a simple 4-piece pattern, and then extended the interlocking pattern outwards to accompany 12 pieces!

If they were color coated, it'd be significantly easier to undo. I'd say a very large portion of the difficulty of this is the mere fact that you can't distinguish which needs to be addressed first because if you find one that is blocked by another, you need to focus on that other, and if that's blocked focus on what's blocking it. But it's hard to keep track of what blocks what because they all look the same.
