All the weird cuts in the distributed version suddenly make sense good lord

The pilot’s dub isn’t perfect, but it is FAR better than what ended up being used in the actual show. At least to me.

This just absolutely confirmed that the 80's series was easily the darkest adaptation of Astro Boy for me. The hospital scene alone is way more impactful then just the crash, despite the dog licking the hat that HAD to make many look on in shock/even cry/etc. While at least in current times I prefer the 2000's series, there is so much here, including the show's handling of "Atlas" as just the perfect villain that you can totally understand why he is the way he is. And without this you don't even realize that his caretaker is with him in future episodes, it just seems like he randomly found an android girl to hang out with who is basically neutral. Also, usually Tobio doesn't look that much like "Astro" in other incarnations. Which actually makes the robot creation creepier for Tenma to go through with it (and then the skin suit thing) and well, people here know the general story set-up. A shame they went "nope, too violent, let's confuse the 80's kids entirely." I do get the impact but it's not like it was bloody or contained nudity (though people these days with astro's design outside the clothes outfits...like they need to get a life lol it's a robot creation for starters). I do wish they could do a full new dub but unless there's a brand new series and people demand it (and don't just watch the 2000's one, or subbed) I feel it's an impossibility sadly. Still a great show. I hope the next time they make an astro boy show they can take influence from the tone and general vibe this particular version always gave off.

*******LONG POST AHEAD******** ******CONTAINS SPOILERS******* I really enjoyed this restoration of the pilot episode. As a child, I first saw Astroboy in the summer of 1986 on WTGI Channel 61 out of Wilmington, Delaware. A few years back, during my undergrad years, I ordered an Astroboy Region 4 DVD box set (from Australia) which had the original first two episodes uncut. After searching online, I finally learned the reason for the heavily edited pilot from an Astroboy website dedicated to Osamu Tezuka. Apparently, the Japanese version of Astroboy (Tetsuwan Atomu) was a bit too dark for American children. There are religious references, alcohol use, and of course, violence and death. The English dubs are toned down, but the intended darker tone is still there in episodes like Blackie Young (robots being dismembered) and The Anti-Proton Gun (Walpurgis is vaporized in gruesome fashion). The biggest factor here is the omission of Atlas’ backstory, which is sad and cruel. I like to believe that Atlas is the poster boy for child abuse and neglect. In the episode Atlas Lives Again, we see flashbacks of Astro fighting Atlas, but I never knew how Atlas became an adult, because it was cut from the English version. So when I watched the episode Crystal of the Desert, I was confused because I was only treated to a brief flashback of damaged boy Atlas repairing himself and Livian after Walpurgis tried to destroy him. The image of damaged boy Atlas on the work table with Livian’s wreckage is a haunting image and it stays with me until today. When I finally watched the Japanese edit of Episode 2 Astro vs Atlas, it all came full circle. I finally got to see how Atlas was damaged and why he had to rebuild himself. Atlas is a mistreated foster child looking for a forever home, but all he got was mistreatment and abuse. In the end, the humans who were supposed to look after Atlas used him and abandoned him. Walpurgis dismantled Livian (basically tortured her for breaking a gargoyle statue) and he tried to blow up Atlas using heat seeking missiles. It's really sad to see poor Atlas drag his broken body all the back to the castle. It’s heartbreaking to see Atlas trying to find comfort among the mangled remains of Livian, the only one who ever showed him any kind of compassion. No wonder Atlas became such a tyrant. Atlas was an adult with a wounded child on the inside, like many of us who carry childhood trauma and pain with us. Atlas was forced to grow up. His adult appearance is proof of that. Astro was there to remind Atlas that innocence is to be valued. Maybe I’m reading too deeply into this, but that’s what I get from this story arc with these two robot brothers. What are your thoughts on Atlas’ backstory and his relation to Astro?

Such a cool find! Definitely gonna have to pick up this set! Astro's voice is the only one that is somewhat similar to the final product. It was cool to hear an english version of child Atlas' voice too!

This seems like it would have been the definitive version of the show, even the delivery is more realistic. The only voice to stay on the final show seems to be Astro Boy, but even his voice actress has a noticeable tinge of seriousness in her tone. The translation is also far more accurate!!!! Aside from the name changes carrying over from the 60’s version it’s mostly more faithful to the original Japanese show than the final English dub.

My guess as to why the first two episodes were combined is that someone decided that the deaths of Tobio, Livian, and Atlas (Albeit temporary) would be too upsetting for the kids to see. Either that, or the fact that Doctor Tenma was shown praying to God. I know that religion was one reason that certain scenes and episodes of the 1963 version didn't make the cut in the English dub.

I remember watching the whole version of this Astro boy series! Could never understand why they changed so many parts from the pilot…….Especially the death scene and the part about Atlas….It would’ve really made more sense if they would’ve kept those parts.

Looking back at the now comics Astro boy series that i did cover with # 1 And going into the other issues online i would say the Now comic series was the closest thing you had to a Adaption of the 1980's Astro boy anime but with some alter moments

Fantastic work finding this. It never made sense to me that they cut everything involving Atlas out so you would only see some of the scenes from episode two in episode four when Astro and Atlas see each other again. It just doesn’t make sense that they’d do it with the main antagonist of the series.

It’s cool there’s something uncensored, I really think they could’ve just edited the young atlas bits without cutting them out entirely. Kids in the 80s must’ve been confused XD Also. They could’ve had it so Toby didn’t die, but was reconstructed as a cyborg to save his life, then again, wouldn’t make sense why the woman scientist doubted his humanity. I like Atlas’ voice too. Sure it’s not perfect, but it sounds like the Japanese voice actor if he happened to be fluent in English. And the female VA’s do a good job.
