ASUS ROG Ally as an everyday computer? I tried it for a whole WEEK!

I've had an ASUS ROG Ally for a while now, and I was curious to see if I could use it for more than just gaming. Here's what I found out after making the ROG Ally my primary Windows computer for a week.

A gaming handheld IS a computer in many sense. Cramping all these specs into such a small form factor itself is a marvelous achievement.

I would get a gaming laptop if I really wanted a do-it-all, portable pc. I was quite close to buying a Rog Ally recently as I quite fancied playing steam games on my living room pc, as well as having access to better power for media than my Amazon fire stick.

A better option if you want to use a handheld gaming pc as an everyday laptop replacement would have been the Legion Go with its bigger screen and 2 usbc ports for easier connectivity to peripherals!

I do believe it is very close to perfect. There are portable keyboards with track pads that are for people that want a laptop, and also docks for people that like a mechanical keyboard like myself. I do play with a 10w setting for mobile gaming and emulators and go full manual settings for when I am docked to play PC games and triple A titles, so battery isn't an issue for me. I have only 2 issues with it: 1) Being able to find a dock that has a 85w output and also comes with DP Alt mode. 2) The charger it comes with is pretty weak since it outputs less than 85W when docked, almost forcing me to buy another charger for it, which at that price is just not fair in my opinion.

Tip: keep in mind that there are portable foldable keyboards with trackpad built in to them. That might help with the whole space dilemma.

I can HIGHLY recommend the Logitech K400 Plus... Good typing feel, accurate trackpad, and a battery life (IF also using 'Energizer Lithiums') that LASTS - there is also a power switch to extend batt life. 👌 😎🇬🇧

I HAVE considered something like this to replace my ancient Nvidia Shield K1 tablet as a Multimedia unit... Currently my main unit connected to my 42" tv, Technics SU-600 'New Class A' integrated amp with a pair of midrange bookshelf speakers, external HDD and all controlled with a wireless keyboard & mouse setup. The K1 is REALLY showing its age, but it has done stirling work for providing a work space (letters/documents/email etc) as well as stream movies/TV series from various platforms, and play my locally saved music and video stuff. I've looked at various Android TV boxes, phones with USB C to HDMI/DisplayPort capabilities (Samsung DeX capable/Motorola 'Ready For' capable), mini PCs, even some laptop/notebook options (Win & Chromebooks). But this, IS another potential for a main 'Portable computer' to hook up to my home 'Working environment/theatre setup'... 🤔😏 😎🇬🇧

Curious to know: why did you opt for that tiny screen in the office when you had a perfectly good monitor right there on the desk? Just have a dock with power, monitor and peripherals ready at the office and plug in for daily office tasks. On the go maybe go for that secondary screen or just limit on the go tasks to gaming and leage the rest to your phone which you already probably do. This just felt like unnecessary shoehorning.

I just use it for light web surfing and UKposts videos.. I'm afraid of degrading the performance for gaming by downloading all kinds of random programs.
