Thanks for the teardown! Nice work and explanations. You seem to really enjoy your work. Congrats! Just got my ZenFone 8 this week. I was hesitant to buy a new phone since my Huawei P9 (Leica) was almost irreplaceble. 4 years old and the old-fucker is still running ok, though it started to hinder me more frequently due to the old Android 7.0, under-performance in modern apps (3GB RAM) and the used battery that needed more frequent charging. The ZenFone 8 checked all my boxes, and I am very satisfied with its size, performance, cameras, 3.5mm audio jack, display. At 5.9" this is a tad bigger than my old P9, but its truly next gen, haha :-) Very happy with this phone, go Asus and Sony with the smaller sized flagship devices! I really don't get the 6.6"-6.7" flagships nowadays. I don't carry a purse nor a bag, I wear the phone in my pockets, sometimes my backpocket when road cycling. Cannot carry a phablet with me all day long. I was tented to go with an iPhone just because of their smaller size. Maybe next time ^_^

@@PBKreviews me again. Forgot to ask you this: can I place thin thermal pad (0.5mm) I usually use for cooling GPU card's VRAM and VRM? If it is doable, where should I put it? I ask this because I read in many forums that this phone heats a lot due to powerful SD888 and causing power spike to the battery. I love this phone! Thx for the disassembly video. Makes me understand this marvelous piece of engineering. Brilliant ASUS. And also its thermal management is so good that there is little to none thermal throttling happening as it's able to take away the heat away from the chip to the back of the phone which we experience the heating up of the back of the phone. Hope ASUS keeps it up with the innovation on the phones and return their Zen philosophy.

Just replaced the back glass on mine and while removing the old adhesive I rubbed part of the ribbon cable for the volume / power button off. I was able to use a paper clip to connect the trace and turn the phone back on, surprisingly. Is there some sort of material i could use to more permanently connect the trace that got rubbed off? The volume button still works so its only the trace for the power button. I purchased a whole new midframe for the phone because for some reason the power button ribbon cable is almost impossible to get, other than a few EU sites that charge $25+ for shipping to the USA. The midframe comes with that ribbon cable. From what it looks like I am guessing that i would need to remove the front LCD to change it, which means breaking the front LCD.
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 8 місяців тому
It doesn't look like its routed through the mid frame. Its just adhered to the midframe/back of the screen. The corners of the flex (where the contact points are that the board sits on) seem slightly tucked behind the frame but once you peel it up and it should come out. Also the parts where the clickers are, there is a rubber gasket covering it in the frame. Removing the gasket should allow you to peel/pull that portion out of the frame as well. So you don't need to remove the screen.

@@dearoo4814 not sure, I don't usually play much games on phones. However any phone with the screen on and game running for 2 hours will definitely heat up. @PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 роки тому
Hi, thanks. You can gain access to the flex cable for the button clickers once you remove the motherboard but to actually remove the physical buttons, you would need to pry the screen off as well since the access to the removing the physical buttons is from the screen side. But you would still need to probably remove the flex cable with clickers for the buttons to make room in that slot to be able to remove it from the other side. However if you don't have a broken screen, keep in mind prying your screen of has a high risk of damaging or breaking the screen so you might need to have that replaced as well.

hello thank you for the great video!! How do you detach the vibrationsmotor? and how do you glue it again? do you just use b7000 glue? is there something special I need to be careful of ?
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 7 місяців тому
usually the vibrator motors are held down with some adhesive (double sided tape like adhesive). so you can use a replacement adhesive n cut it down to shape. b7000 can be used but better to stick with adhesive tape. Only thing you need to do is apply heat to loosen the adhesive so you can pry it off easier and be careful to not tear or damage the flex cable when peeling it off

I have some problems when speakerphone mode is active during a call, each time person on other side of the line hears himself like echoes, some robotic voice like signal excitation and interference . How to find out which one is crappy/defected? Mic's test in asus utility passes tests OK (there are few seconds my voice is recording and then played for each MIC. Is there are some MIC's controller or some unit on mainboard which operate them?
@PBKreviews

The mic's are soldered onto the main board and bottom sub board so they would require de soldering to remove them to replace. Or for the bottom sub board which is the main mic, the sub board can be replaced. The secondary mic on top would probably be the one which is active as well during speaker phone.

You can pull out the rubber cover that is in the frame covering the cable, and then gently peel off the volume/power flex from the frame and remove it, then if I am not mistaken you can either pull out or push in the buttons to remove them but not 100% sure since sometimes they require prying off the screen on some phones. If its not clicking or its clicking but not registering, most likely you would only need to replace the flex cable and not the actual key.

Can you or anyone advise whether I should replace the full digitizer with frame or just the glass? Most of the screens on amazon seem to come with the frame, described as: "AMOLED LCD Screen for Asus Zenfone 8 ZS590KS Digitizer Full Assembly with Frame." One question. Can I change the volume rocker without damaging the display or the battery? Asus states they have to destroy those components.
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 роки тому
The reason they say that is because when you pry off the battery, they deem it not reusable due to the fact if it has bends or warps it would make the battery not function to its fullest potential. However you can use isopropyl alcohol and apply some around the sides of the battery and let it sit for 30 seconds so it eats away at the adhesive underneath making it easier to pry off, thus reducing the potential damage that can be caused to the battery. As long as your careful should be fine. But in general I don't see the need to remove the battery since its not in the way of anything that would prevent access to the part you want replaced. When it comes to the screen though, they are correct about that, because from the looks of it, you can remove and replace the flex cable for the buttons after removing the motherboard, but the actual physical buttons look to be removable from the front of the frame when the screen is removed, so prying the screen off poses a very high chance of damaging or breaking it etc. Some buttons can be removed by pulling them directly out of the frame but not all so not sure if these can be pulled out without taking the phone apart or not. If yours are broken or damaged and you don't care, you can try pulling them out of their sockets from the outside to see if they will come off. Then you can push in the replacement one.

There is a secondary microphone on the small blue board on the back glass by the camera bezel. Make sure you transfer that board over to your replacement back glass and that the back glass is seated properly so that boards contacts touch the main board contacts to give it signal. I'm assuming that mic is not being activated for noise cancellation and thus giving you this issue.

I've had this phone for one month and have just cracked the top left front glass over the front facing camera. I have heard that I can just replace the glass, as the touch screen and LED panel is still functioning. Is this true? I have had a look online for just the front glass component, but I am having trouble finding any. could you or anybody else help point me in the right direction please?
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 роки тому
No the glass itself is not user replaceable. Its glued to the screen and requires special tools/machines to do the job. Some people mickey mouse it but the chance of cracking the screen or damaging it when trying to pry the old glass off on top of re gluing a new one and having dust under it and touch being off etc is just not worth it. You would need to replace the complete screen assembly.

@@PBKreviews Thank you so much for your reply. Your response was what I expected to be honest, after watching some videos of it being performed, It seems very fiddly. I use the zenfone for work only now, as I have the new pixel 6 pro for my personal toy. I can live with the screen damage as it is, so long as I can prevent the cracks from getting worse. Then maybe I'll replace the screen at a later date, If the prices drop more. I'm fairly confident of replacing the screen myself, as I have a few old phones that I have been practicing on, taking apart and putting back together

Has enough thermal paste and cooling to keep it running pretty smooth. Also has adequate measures in place (strong adhesive, gasket around openings and ports) for the ip68. Thanks a lot for this tutorial! But... Mother fuckers.... I bought this phone because I really wanted to support Asus and the zenfone lineup. Love to have small, powerful phones. But never did I expect them to have constructed this at Apple level difficulty to replace the battery. On my previous LG G6, removing the battery was much easier. The fact that you gave this 7/10 really shows how terrible the self-repair designs of today's phones really is. Why cant they make the battery and charging ports the easiest to access, because those are the two things failing first.

You don't need to replace the frame, but makes for a much easier screen replacement if you get a screen and frame combo that is pre attached. If not, the screen is held down with adhesive and once you take the phone apart, you can heat it up and pry the screen of the midframe.
