The cartwheel line is actually a metaphor for her losing her innocence as a girl. At a certain age, girls are advised not to do some physical activities, like cartwheels, because it’s “unlady-like” or “provocative” due to the inappropriate sexualization of young girls and teens by creepy adults around them. Young girls aren’t allowed or encouraged to be as physically free and playful like boys their age around them

Thanks for explaining that Sierra! It really saddens me that we live in a world where this is a reality for women and girls, however I feel a sense of hope knowing there are some people with far-reaching platforms such as Lana who are using them to raise awareness for important issues such as this one. Cheers, Rob

@@listening_lounge See how men, even well-meaning ones, have issues accessing the truths of what it is like to be a female in this world.

I agree. We, as a society, need to do a lot more in this regard. This is why I really appreciate artists like Lana who provide us (men) with a much deeper understanding of the female perspective

This is so true! I was raised in a Christian cult and girls weren’t allowed to play around boys/men like that at a certain age because it might “entice and stumble them” we were children 🤬

If you guys are planning to do more lana reaction, i think the song kintsugi or fingertips would be a great reaction idea. The lyrical content is very meaty, it would make a great discussion.

Thanks for the suggestions Boy dwi Pinosa :) That's something I really like about the Lana songs I've listened to so far (Paris, Texas and A&W), they have a lot of depth to them. We'll definitely cover other Lana tracks in the future. Cheers, Rob

Thank you guys! I love this song, it's one of her best and she has plenty! The Lana experience is completely unique. This song is about rape culture, victim- and 'slut' shaming

No worries! Thanks for the suggestion :) Completely agree about the Lana experience being unique. She really does have a sound which is unlike anyone else. And I really like that Lana used her platform of music to get some very important messages across in this song. She's a great artist/person! Cheers, Rob

you really have to listen to her chronologically b/ there are soo many callbacks in this one song to her previous works. the "not abt trying to find someone to love me anymore" is a call back to video games with the opposite sentiment. the Jimmy ref we've seen throughout her works etc etc she really is an artist who constantly refers to her older works/sentiments n has some themes that she plays out consistently.
@listening_lounge

Thanks for providing that context sn12! We'll definitely react to other Lana songs in the future. I'm planning to go through Lana's discography so I'm looking forward to hearing her earlier works :) Cheers, Rob

Hey guys! Loved this reaction, some things about Lana and her mother: throughout her childhood they had a bad relationship and her mother was very mentally abusive. At 16 she was send to a boarding school in Spain partly for her alcohol addiction. (When she is referring to Spain in Paris, Texas, this why) Her mother said she didn't want Lana to come back to them in the States. She also said Lana should never have kids because of her mental state, this is a subject that's present in some other songs on this album that you'll hopefully react to! There is lots more to unpack but this is just some background, hopefully helpful!!
@listening_lounge

Great to hear you loved our reaction yxnnxck! And thanks for providing information about Lana's background. It's very saddening to know she had these traumatic experiences earlier in her life 😔 But it's really heart-warming to know she is helping others through her emotional vulnerability.

Loved the reaction and reviewing you guys!!! So well explained and interpreted... You know I personally feel like this Ocean Boulevard album is one of Lana's finest works because if you listen to her early albums, you can tell you are listening to songs which are sung and written by a girl who is feeling a lot of inner conflict. Its a fact that Lana had a rough upbringing and really tumultuous experiences growing up but we always saw her chronicling the impact those experiences had vis a vis her relationships (in earlier albums)... But now of course she's no longer in her 20s as she was while writing her early albums and now we're getting to see her perspective as a woman in 30s who has come to terms with how her life experiences changed her. While A&W might be one of the more unsettling songs lyrically, the album does have songs which are optimistic and bright and then there are some completely dark. But its a very unique album in her catalogue. Love this woman. And love you guys too!! HOLY FUCK I JUST TYPED AN ESSAY !!!!!
@listening_lounge

Great to hear that you liked our reaction Surner! We appreciate the positive feedback :) I really enjoyed reading your comment about us getting to see how Lana's perspectives have changed between the lyrics in her early songs and the lyrics she has written most recently as a woman in her 30's. This, along with seeing how the sound of her music has changed over time, are the things I'm most looking forward to discovering once I find the time to go through Lana's discography. Lastly, we love you and we loved your essay! ❤️ Cheers, Rob

You should check out some of her earlier stuff. A few songs I'd recommend are Blue Jeans, Gods & Monsters, Shades of Cool, High by the Beach, Heroin, Cinnamon Girl, Yosemite, & Wildflower Wildfire. Those are all my favorite songs from each of her earlier albums, as A&W is my favorite from this newest album. She has so much good stuff, but if you haven't heard any of what I suggested, you should absolutely check them out. Would love to watch your reactions to them.

I think it can be understood as both “got a cop” and “gods a charlatan” as she often elusively uses words which sound similar so the song is more mysterious and open to interpretation. This was a really fantastic, thorough reaction by the way and I much appreciated it as a fellow Aussie. You guys would also enjoy Heroin and Dark Paradise (both fan favourites and also rock influenced)

@CarmenNevada Рік тому
@@listening_lounge The lyrics on Genius are correct. Search for "Lana Del Rey singing an alternate version of A&W" to hear her sing that verse and some more unused lyrics. She doesn't mention God, it's a production trick to censor the word "cop" because she used to date a police officer and it was very publicised.
@listening_lounge
