All of the furniture and rooms in Leonardo Di Chiara’s tiny house fold, swing, and, pivot into the walls, so, when closed, the space is absent of color, like a whiteboard perfect for the creative process of a young architect.
Calling it aVOID in reference to the hollow shell it can morph into, Di Chiara says it’s more aspirational than a reflection of his not-yet-hyper-minimalist lifestyle,
He wanted an uncluttered lifestyle but he also wanted to be mobile and to live in a big city. His solution, to build a row house on wheels. Di Chiara has currently wedged his row house between two tiny houses on the campus of the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin where Van Bo Le-Mentzel, designer of the "one square meter" house, has organized a tiny living experiment.
Di Chiara hopes to continue the experimenting when he moves to Milan. His idea is to create a prototype for a Migratory Neighborhood that could be replicated across Europe so urban nomads like himself could find temporary places to park their homes in schools (during the summer), parks (in winter), abandoned lots, etc. He sees it as a win-win for cities eager to keep eyes on the street in isolated or temporarily unused parts of town.

@Angela James I know!!! I’ve watched a countless number of small space videos because they’re such an interesting design challenge and I’ve NEVER seen anything like the chairs. Absolutely OUTSTANDING design. Genius. As to the rest of the void, it’s still a work in progress, which is how it’s presented to us. I appreciate it as a concept, applaud his skills as a collaborator, and admire his energy, commitment and vision. I don’t think all white would really be viable in a commercial application and the ladder looks dangerous. A round rod at the ceiling level and hooks on the end of the ladder would help, as is seen in a built in floor to ceiling bookcase. The kitchen faucet is REALLY good design. If the unfolding table was closer to the kitchen, along with 2 more chairs, it would function as both additional counter space, better seating for guests, and of course a desk. I’m not commenting on the bathroom, he acknowledges that it needs a lot more work. All and all, a really interesting concept and video.

Love the minimalism. It doesn't stay minimal once you put it together, but it looks so clean and inviting. I really enjoy blank spaces, I think it especially helps if you are doing a lot of design work being that you have to keep track of a lot of "moving" parts in your head and construct them through a screen, on paper, or physically. Your mind can start to feel messy if you are also in a messy space, having to sort through visual information that isn't related to your work.

69drummerdude It’s clever, yes, but as a home - which we are led to believe was the purpose - it’s utterly useless for everyone except the most fanatic ascetics. Just think of how you come home after a day at work and what you do until you sleep, and then imagine doing the same things in this fish tank. If the success criterion was cramming everything from a home into the space of a horse trailer, this would pass. It the success criterion was creating a liveable home there, it would fail.

It’s a therapeutic pet project due to his childhood trauma of having a tiny room and now being an architect. He’s not going to live there. Most likely, no one ever will. This is a classic example of what happens when modern architects design houses: Everything is meticulously thought out but there is no SOUL and very few (if any) people enjoy the quality of life is this soulless desert. It’s impractical beyond belief. Just look at the fridge - it had no room. You’d need to shop at least every second day. And a toilet/bathroom with a floor to ceiling glass door... only an architect can think that’s a good idea. Of how about keeping the garbage just under the computer. Unbelievable.

The grey is that so everything may be equal so no color cringyness... even an OCD person gets annoyed with color patterns.

I love your videos, great job. We just received approval for one of the first tiny house communities on foundations in Sedona Arizona as a model for permanent sustainable living, installation will be in January 2018, units are built by students and featured in minutes 10-20 of the video living tiny legally part 2. It might make for a good story... getting into site planning, and design of permanent tiny home communities.

That said, a lot of people (including white ones) do like these homes and want to live in them. Most of those people, also understand that that level of minimalism isn't for everybody. Your anger is pointed at the wrong people.

I love it. The look is clean and organized. It is wonderful that the space can remain blank which is so important to the inspiration of creativity. Clean space, clean mind. The mental freedom one feels in a blank space after being over-stimulated or saturated by crowded city conditions is refreshing and peaceful. While the space seems so severe, it looks soft and positive. In this space, I would like to see surfaces one could draw on and wipe clean, or magnetic surfaces upon which one could hang artwork. It would be fun to project computer generated designs on the walls. And, a clean space is best to highlight a beautifully made knit blanket or quilt. Less clutter to distract from what one would want to showcase. One day it could be filled with artwork. The next day it could be blank and free again. A full length mirror behind a door would fit in there nicely. Best of all, there is plenty of sunlight. There is room for a small tree in there. Plentiful fresh air. Privacy. No clutter. Safe. What a great space in which to decompress or meditate.
