Today we waterproof my underground backyard culvert bunker. Visit www.kiwico.com/jerryrig for 50% off your first month of KiwiCo with code JERRYRIG. And huge thanks to KiwiCo for sponsoring this video. Before we can bury my backyard bunker and put the dirt back on top, we have to make sure that the bunker tube itself is water tight. If water gets inside the bunker when it rains.... well... that would not be a good thing.

Consider renting/ buying a gas meter which analyses the air (oxygen %) in the bunker while construction is going on. There's plenty of fresh air now, but once you start closing it up more, you risk suffocation due to lack of oxygen that's used in rusting (oxidisation of metal) or a leaking inert gas bottle used in welding. Could become a problem overnight without warning. Stay safe and good luck. Looking forward to the rest of this series. - Safety Sally

I’m about 3 seconds in but what your saying tells me he didn’t backfil with concrete witch has a interesting reaction with metal oxidation keeping metal that’s touching concrete from rusting with just neutral ph moisture Edit never mind I’m farther into the video that’s a dumb building order

It might also be smart to add a sacrificial anode afterwards, just in case you missed any small amount of bare metal. This might be able to take the lifetime of the bunker to a couple hundred years if managed properly.
@PsRohrbaugh
@PsRohrbaugh 4 місяці тому
This. Sacrificial anodes are common with buried propane tanks.
@Cuetanks
@Cuetanks 4 місяці тому
Yes! considering there is still mill scale on the steel under the coating you applied any damage or inconsistency’s to the coating and milscale will cause accelerated corrosion to the steel (mill scale is electrochemicaly catholic to the steel) highly suggest a scraraficial anode. (Probably should have abrasive blasted mill scale off before applying coating)😅

@hamza-chaudhry 4 місяці тому
What's a sacrificial anode?
@ahmadmohammad3615
@ahmadmohammad3615 4 місяці тому
@@hamza-chaudhrybasically what it sounds like, you place a metal that corrodes easier than the one of the bunker. In that way when corrosion occurs it will happen at the sacrificial metal. For more details check how corrosion, anodes and kathodes work 😊
@PsRohrbaugh
@PsRohrbaugh 4 місяці тому
@@hamza-chaudhry When you have different metals inside something wet, atoms move between them. This is how batteries work. Some metals are more willing to let go of ions than other metals. Zinc is a common sacrificial anode. So you put some Zinc under the bunker and connect it, and the zinc will corrode before the steel does. There are also "active" solutions which add electricity to the steel to reduce the chance of corrosion. These work as long as you have electricity to run them. Either way, these systems can add decades or centuries onto the life of buried metal.

Zack is definitely making his money back with this series of BIY bunker building videos. Well deserved because they're entertaining and informational!

By "money back" do you mean he is funding all this project by his UKposts views?

Liking this one of a kind build. I mentioned before about the lack of a concrete footing with rebar but I don't know your soil conditions in Utah very well. It may be fine if in an arid area. Will be watching and enjoying. Cheers 🇨🇦

When a once more famous Canadian youtuber made a small pop in a Utah backyard he got into big trouble with the state. This particular project is really making a statement about things to come in the future!

I hope there are no groundwater issues in this area. I once installed a toilet tank, and we had to ensure its stability by weighting it down with concrete. A spacious room filled with air can experience significant uplift. Otherwise great project. 👍🏼
