Is there some kind of wrap we should use to help keep insects away? In all, another good lesson / reminder to always stay prepared on the homestead. Sometimes troubles find you, even when you aren't looking for it.

This is the second homesteader video I watched today that had a drunk driver causing a crash! Unfortunately, in the other one the husband was killed and the wife and 2 small children were severely injured. If any of you also watch The Kneady Homesteader, maybe you could go over and let them know that you are thinking of them.

yes indeed go over,,, drinking and driving is pre med i ate ted red rum. in the matt and heather story. and in yours it is still pre med i ate ted _________(fill n blank) when you start your car you know if you have consumed alcohol. the losers destroying our govt r tripping on the protection and dr suess instead of example: making drivers b charge w pre med, instead of mans laughter... wow , really? 'mans laughter'?? my bad. these drivers need help yes, of course, i demand Heathers driver be charged with the fullest, just shy of death row. i hope dude has to do serious restitution to you kids. if your tree dies, i don't know, when something you love/care about and it has a heartbeat then someone kills that heartbeat they must be forced to face consequences. especially doing it under the influence of alcohol. smoke jane instead. we need Jesus back in our schools. since TEXAS is being clear w no masks as of 3/10 it would be fitting for a pledge and a prayer so Jesus can see all our smiles again. peace be upon you.

I detest drunk drivers and gave no, none, nada empathy for them. They kill people because unfortunately the drunk usually lives. They should go to jail first time until they have gone through drying out and have ankle bracelets to assure they go through rehab. Ugh, I am thinking again about Heather, The Kneady Homesteader and her recent loss of her husband and what she and her kids are enduring because of a drunk driver.

Years ago, an impaired driver rolled his car like a corkscrew through our yard. Police and fire/rescue arrived to take care of everything. Driver was ok. Our trash cans were pulverized and trash had been shot all over the road. While the driver was being cared for, I busied myself getting the trash and container remnants off the road. I FORGOT that I was supposed to put money under my daughter’s pillow for a lost tooth. Next morning, my daughter was so upset that the Tooth Fairy had failed her duties. I told her about the accident in front of the house. With all the sirens and lights and activity, I was certain the Tooth Fairy had been scared away. My daughter considered that and added that the Tooth Fairy definitely wouldn’t want the police catching her sneaking into our house! Lol!

Funny story: my granddaughter lost a tooth two years ago when she was 8, and she was scared of the thought of someone sneaking into the house and putting money under her pillow so she wrote a note to the tooth fairy to just leave the money on the table downstairs hahaha

That license plate is all the police need. Whether it was alcohol or head injury, the guy was clearly impaired. I’m glad you weren’t hurt.

It sounds like they would have had plenty of DNA information. Given his self preservation mode, I would imagine that he is known to the force. Thankfully, no one in the house was injured, although it would have shaken all.

If you're so inclined, you file an insurance claim against the owner of the car for damage to the tree. Probably the guy that ran off. Leaving the scene of an accident will land that guy in even more trouble on top of the drunk driving. Thankfully he didn't hit your house.

Oh my gosh. My stress leave went from 0 to 90 in seconds. I was looking after my granddaughters at the time. The 5 year old said nana you have to watch the lovely lady and the beard man they might need your help. My heart melted. I live in the UK she was putting on her boots so we could come and help. What can you say to that

i just watched another channel that popped up : " The Kneady Homesteader" she is also in Michigan.. a drunk driver hit her and her family head on. lost her husband and she is severly injured. a miracle that she survived.

There’s a black tar like substance that arborist use when grafting or pruning damaged limbs that can be painted onto a wounded area that prevents insects from causing more damage. Hope you can save that lovely tree!

The guy was a knucklehead -they are going to find him by his license plate number. The gash on his head will verify it's him. People never cease to amaze me.

A college classmate once told me she was in a bad car accident that launched her through the windshield. Apparently, she was running around in circles muttering odd sentences, face covered in blood from the lacerations, very bad concussion. Pretty scary!

This is so sad to hear about because of what recently happened to "The Kneady Homesteaders" family. Matt was killed by a drunk driver and the family was in the hospitals for a long time. Prayers for all involved.

If you can get the police report, you need to file with his insurance company. Your tree should be covered, provided he had coverage. You could also file with your company and they would subrogate against his company.

Thank God it was only a tree and he didn’t take someone’s life...or his own. AnotherUKposts Homesteader was just tragically impacted by a drunk driver who killed her husband, caused broken bones and lacerations to her two young children and she almost lost her own life and will probably by plagued the rest of her life with pain from her multiple critical injuries.

I'm glad you two weren't hurt. A couple years ago I was the first person to get to the office in the morning. There was a car out front with two people slumped over and the front of the car all banged up. I called the cops right away. Drunk driving is inexcusable.

You might check with your homeowners insurance and see if they will pay for the arborist to work on the tree. Also you can call the sheriff or police, tell them it was your yard and ask them if they found the guy. They should be able to tell you at least that much. Glad you are safe.

There was a place close to one of the farms I worked on. It belonged to the farmers elderly uncles. He had 4 huge cedar trees by his driveway. The driveway was close to a gentle curve in the road. Very deceptive. The old uncle generally had to fish people out of the bushes about once a month. There had been a pond there but it got filled in due to bad drivers. But it wasn't all bad as he made good money getting a small fence rebuilt. Drivers insurance companies must have hated him.😁

I put petroleum jelly on a gash on a tree it was all I had, my hypothesis was I needed to keep the bugs from attacking it as it healed. I slathered it on pretty good. And watched. No bugs attacked the wound healed over the tree looks great the owner wants to cut it down. But the petroleum jelly kept the bugs at bay.

Wow, this story brought back memories! When I was a kid, we lived in a hilly rural area of Puerto Rico, and our house was immediately past a sharp curve in the road. During the four years we lived there, not less than four, and it might have been more, cars coming down that hill missed the curve and crashed into our extremely solid concrete fence. After the first accident, I remember my mother kept a stack of clean towels and various first aid supplies (including a tourniquet!) in a box on the porch, so she could take it with her out to the road if there was another accident --- and it came in handy more than once. Considering that she was often there alone with us kids while my dad was in the States, had no telephone for most of that time (it took forever to install phones in PR back then), and the only locals who would miss that curve were men who had been drinking too heavily at the bodega up the hill, I realize in hindsight she was a pretty gutsy lady.

Man. What a crazy night. I gotta say it, though... That tree took quite a bit and held her ground. I'm impressed! But I could definitely tell sweet Rachel was shaken and upset about the whole ordeal. Though it was a rotten move on that guy's part to be drinking and driving, and then ultimately leave the scene, I hope he's okay. I have to hold out hope that people like that can be fixed after losing my Gramps similarly.

Hope you can save the tree. Sugar maples are hardy, however, that is a big trama to the tree. The guy has a problem, it's unfortunate he made it yours.

That's scary ! I hope he went for medical treatment at some point ,front head gash like that bleeds like mad . I had to live through a night like this when a friend hit a tree at 75 ! He fled, the paramedics were at the house before him and when he showed up his shoe's were squishy with blood . The tree recovered with a big dimple in it . This is a heavy drinking problem to drive like this and I ultimately lost my long time friend when he flipped his truck down a overpass . Pray for this man that he turns it around now .

They had you back away for a couple of reasons. Injured people can be combative (I used to work in hospitals). Bleeding people can have blood bourne illnesses you are not protected against. The car could catch fire or explode. So with all the good will in the world, especially in the dark, unless you are absolutely certain you can save someones life by moving them out of immediate danger, it is absolutely best to leave them to the professionals to get them out safely for the people in the car, for the persons doing the saving and for you. My sister used to do that because she was smaller than the other firefighters and could crawl into wrecks to stabilize and maneuver people out of the vehicles. It tore up her back and she was unable to work 20 years to get a pension. She is one of my heroes.

I wish our tree had protected our house. A drunk driver hit the front of our house a few years ago. It took our our plumbing but missed the gas line. As bad as it was, no one was hurt so it could have been way worse. The driver was okay in the end even though he was double over the limit. The blessing in disguise for us was we were able to get some renovations done we needed to do. The driver did come to our door the next day (I still don't know how he wasn't being detained) and was apologizing in tears. We told him we were glad he was okay but didn't excuse the accident. Scary for sure, we thought part of the house was on fire at first but it was his air bags smoking. Thank God for insurance.

It's been 18 years since I got a call to come home from work because there was a Buick sitting in the middle of my living room. Scary sight. (Luckily no one was hurt and no one was home at the time.) Glad you were safe. And today we finished cooking down maple sap. Been an all weekend job- but oh so worth it.

Poor tree. Hope it makes it. That’s a really large tree to loose. An impaired driver ran over our 4 foot x 3 foot brick mailbox and destroyed it several years ago. They were actually trying to back up to get away but there car was impaled on the mailbox. Same loud crashing sound after dark that you heard. Pretty scary. We're in a fairly small town so the police were there quickly to handle it. They even helped us pick up the salvageable bricks. Glad you guys are okay.

There is an old-time method of repairing your tree. It is called bridge grafting. I don't know for sure if it would work in this case but it might. Without going into a lot of detail, it involves grafting small diameter, dormant branches between the undamaged lower and upper part of the space in between. You would need to take branch cuttings of more than sufficient length to bridge the gap and keep them in cold storage until the tree begins to grow in the spring. You then prepare both the tree and the branch pieces for grafting and graft them. If they take, and if done right should they will provide the tree to allow the flow up and down that side of the tree. overtime they will grow in size and over the long haul they will eventually grow together

I find myself a whole lot less judgemental toward people making bad choices these days. So much hopelessness, uncertainty and stress for even a normally level headed individual lately. Praying that this man is found and that he gets the help he needs, no matter what the circumstances were that led to his very, very bad choice of stepping into a vehicle while intoxicated.

Something very similar happened to me! I was driving late, approaching a hill and I saw weird lights spinning towards me. It took me a minute to realize it was a car spiraling towards the ditch & me! I stopped and luckily wasn’t hit and called the police and the people that owned the property also came out. The owners didn’t seem to care about the well being of the driver and were literally guns blazing. She was definitely on drugs and was beginning to be violent so I somewhat understand that. I tried to calm her down and sit with her until first responders arrived. I am also in the country and this lady had no idea where she was she just kept trying to run off. It was very scary, I left when they arrived and I knew she was being taken care of.

So glad you all are ok, and hope your tree isn’t to bad. Things like this put you in shock, rest and take care of you. The police will find the guy, hope he is ok and able to straighten himself out.

Wow! Be happy that neither of you got hurt or were out getting the sap from that tree. Put up a concrete barrier. You know now where the swerve factor is.
