Last May, then-Bali Governor Wayan Koster mooted a cap on the number of tourists to the island. It follows a January proposal to ban activities on Bali’s sacred mountains, a ban that was put in place in June. But just four months later, the mountain ban was reversed, and talks of a visitor cap vanished. Instead, the island surpassed tourist targets for 2023.
While some welcomed vacationers as Bali recovers from the pandemic, others are fed up with tourists behaving badly. What is behind the island paradise’s love-hate relationship with tourism, and what does it have to do with the island’s history?

You just cannot turn your place into something else just to please the tourists. Did Paris built Chinese themed hotels, Chinese opera houses or Chinese style bar to attract Chinese tourists? Heck no. Bali should stay Balinese. If some Aussie tourists lament about how hard it is to find western style beer…remind him to go back home to find one. The problem with Bali and Thailand is that they try to appease western tourists too much they themselves turn into western people. Japan has one of the highest tourist numbers in Asia and they stick to what they are.

As someone who born, raised in Bali and pretty much raised by the "tourism money", i had seen the good the bad and the ugly of what the tourism brings to my home island. To put it simply, the good is that it had help pull out many families out of poverty and raised the living standard significantly, like i still remember how my hometown changed from this completely rural village like typical southeast asian village into quite a decent well built quite prosperous town in the span of like 10 years thanks to many of my villager went to work in the tourism industry. Economically its a blessing but it also brings high congestion, polution and degrading our traditional values that we are so very proud of due to demand in work hours, the limited spaces to expand and built new roads and means of public transportation and mismanaged pollution ranging from trash to smog. I still remember back when i was at the elementary school that we joked about floods the likes at major urbanized cities because such concepts never been (or wasnt that frequent) back then, but now its became somewhat of a normality The end of the day i would say that all of these is due years of mismanagement and the lacking sense of urgency. We should've done a lot more back then with all the money that we had got from tourism by investing on infrastructure and mitigation from overtourism. I didnt claimed to had the answer for all the problem but i think the government should start to brainstorm and work harder to repair the damage that already had been done (well at least the one that possible to be fixed), and mitigate future problem before it becomes more harder to dealt with I still had lots of comparison that i had experienced sinces my childhood but this comment were already too long so i leave at that

Bali holds a special place in my heart, but it's starting to feel overwhelmed. The infrastructure isn't keeping up with demand, and the endless construction is disruptive. Traffic is a nightmare! It's time for change if Bali wants to preserve its unique magic. I don't find myself visiting as much as I had. And what improvement is the chief talking about? That one underpass at Kuta? The government needs to do more!

Why King does not take the lead in making Bali well well-planned and tourists-Numbers-controlled destination? Is King totally useless? No one values his leadership and opinion? How much Bali money does Main-Indonesia take and how much goes back to Bali people?

@@nv9991 kings and royal does exist in bali but they held no political power. They are merely ceremonial one, but in bali theres 2 type of government bodies, the democraticly elected one, and one that govern in the realm of religious affairs and so called "adat" (tradition). So they only influence like "when is the next ceremonial to celebrate the newly built temple will be" Or "theres this new central government rulings about the creation of new roads that might pass thru sacred ground" but even tho they are only ceremonial in nature they still able to influence decisions making indirectly

As an Indonesian, I have observed a gradual disillusionment with Bali due to the increasing number of tourists, resulting in a deterioration of mutual respect between visitors and locals. It is essential to uphold Indonesian cultural values, which prioritize respect over monetary interests. It is paramount for both tourists and locals to actively cultivate an environment of mutual respect and comprehension within Bali.

This actually is the same problem with all over-touristed spots around the world. It's sad that at the cost of economic growth, you lose a place's charm, authenticity, and original character. Everything just becomes for show and for money. And that place becomes dependent or even like "hooked" to it, as if it were substance abuse. It's a domino effect, what outside developers bring in. Theu offer to buy land, prices go up, locals are not able to buy or keep land there, so everything eventually gets owned by outsiders and locals have less control on what can be done to it. As a person who likes to travel though, I want to visit Indonesia and I actually want to visit places other than Bali. Java is of interest to me because it has major cities. I want to see the real Indonesia! Eat local food, interact with locals!

Those white tourists want to regain control of your country as their colony. You will notice they always start propagandas that locals don't care about the environment and they are the ones who care. They are justifying their desires to own lands in Indonesia and be allowed to have the rights of citizens such as being allowed to vote and own and carry weapons. They pretend to be non-racist and cosmopolitan but behind those acts, they are no different from their imperialist ancestors. Usually they hide under the guise of being non-racists, fighting for world without borders, internationalist or leftists but in reality, they are still the same imperialists who want to take your lands.

As a Thai person, we believe that Bali is the last stronghold of Old southeast Asians culture. The island and culture must be protected. Southeast Asians are kind and polite but don’t take our kindness for weakness. In Thailand, recently we have westerners attacking Thai nationals as well, it’s becoming a problem as well. This is unacceptable, you are a guest in our home, you should have respect for our culture and our people.

I've lived in Phuket for 10 years - in Thailand 22 years total. I've escaped now due to the Russian invasion and due to corruption that is now completely out of control. You may want to deal with that. It is also unfortunate that the Thais never get up in arms when yet another foreigner is attacked, cheated or scammed - which happens way more often than the opposite. I agree though that it is unacceptable - but from both sides.

@@exelrode I think you only visited Bali, In fact, there are more temples in Java than in Bali, we protect all Buddhist and Hindu temples no matter what our religion is, Islam, Catholic, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucianism, or even atheist. Even our government is still doing many excavations for buried temples or ancient ruins in Java and Sumatra. Yes, the accommodations, alcohol, and pork are not as good as in Bali but it's developing. The extremists are not Indonesian Muslims, they're imported products from the Middle East or the CIA that brainwash the non-well-educated or closed-minded people, but the Densus88 (Anti-terrorist Police Department) keeps them shut down. To prove it, We can attend the biggest metal festival in Southeast Asia, the Hammersonic (Slipknot, Blackflag, Batushka, Trivium last year. And, Lamb of God, Ingwy, Suicide Silence this year). Next month, we have Avenged Sevenfold concert in Jakarta. Last month we had Ed Sheeran and Calum Scott, Blackpink, also last year we had a football match between Indonesia vs Argentina. It breaks my heart to see the over developed buildings/ hotel/ mall in Sanur, Canggu, Ubud. This is not a long term tourism. Tourists love nature not buildings. I cant imagine Bali in the next 20-30 years. If the government still ignorant and greedy and corrupted we need to say good bye to our innocent, peaceful Bali. I stayed in Bali for 6 months in 1968/9. There were about 30 backpackers at that time, staying in the Adi Asa guesthouse in Denpasar, plus some wealthier tourists at the Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur. But not very many. Kuta was a fishing village with no hotels at all. We’d go there on a day trip from Denpasar. I cycled around the island, having bought a bicycle, and also went around on Vespas. The backpackers were mostly pot smokers and we would sit around the guest house in a big circle sharing joints. Sometimes the chief of police would drop by, listen to the latest music cassettes which I had brought from Singapore, and he would also take a puff of the ganja. It was apparently, obviously, legal! I had a good camera and slide film and carefully took photos of the amazing sights. Some time later, while living in Japan, I managed to publish a book about Bali comprising 100+ photos and 15,000 words of text. It was a personal travelogue, published by Kodansha International, in English. 15,000 copies were printed. I have so many fond memories of Bali in its unspoilt state. I am sorry, but by publishing that book I must have contributed to Bali’s demise, in some way. Sorry, Bali 😢

Tourists are wild, they love to break the rules and have no rules at all...on the other side of the world but then... nobody must allow the lack of respect for the ... Holy Creation, natural beauties or precious religious areas. Once again, loving our planet is crucial, no matter where , for which country. I just came back from Bali. It was an amazing time...however I am ashamed of many tourists. To be associated with westerners with no respect, no civility, no culture of their own, drunk, driving like fools....I mean i can go on but you get the picture. The fact that many well behaved people visit Bali should not be diminished. BUT...the ones that ruin things for all people wanting to have a beautiful experience there stand out more. They are an extreme embarrassment even in their own countries! So i hope the people of Bali can know that many many of us really love it there and treasure the island and its people. Peace

The biggest problem is that people here just refuse to acknowledge the truth. Look at the comments section below and see how some people are trembling in anger and having a hard time swallowing the harsh realities of their own country. Mind you these are not ignorant people. They see everything from their own eyes. Whether it is the extreme poverty, dirty, chaotic, no concept of hygiene, loud streets or extreme pollution. They can see everything! Yet they would make excuses and do mental gymnastics to avoid acknowledging these problems. Whenever you point these things out, they go ultra defensive, become insulting and start to go crazy. I met people from other developing countries and they freely talk about the problems that exist there, but Indonesia do nothing but either ignoring them and attacking others who point them out. The only way to fix a country is to acknowledge that problems exist there.

The $9 tourist tax is too low. I paid $200 per day in Bhutan in 2023 ( now it’s $100 per day). Bali has to decide if it wants fewer tourists who are prepared to pay top dollar to access its unique culture, or submit to greed and let everyone in. My last visit to Bali was in 2010, when there were still a few places which retained their beauty and innocence. Those days are gone and I fear for Bali, if it does not stop mass tourism. A few dollars in the pocket now, but misery in the future when the magic disappears and no one will want to go there.

But even then Denpassar and Kuta were ugly places with a lot of bars and very many drunk tourists, a lot of traffic and a lot of waste. I remember really disliking that place. I hope the people can take back control and save the island and the culture. To be so highly dependand on tourism is not good for any country.

Paradise on a budget… Bali is nice, but nowhere near the most beautiful place on earth. We like it there, have been 3 times and will return, but stop overeating Bali pls! It’s sunny, cheap, loads of luxury villas and hotels, private pools and private staff comes in many cases as standard. Fun to see how they patch up, repair and hide the real Bali, the weeks up to the G20 meetings. Beaches are so so, far from stunning, hence the amazing pools found at hotels and the private pools offered. Traffic… a nightmare and only acceptable when you have a driver and don’t need to deal with it yourself. Prices, everything is very cheap that’s the biggest plus about Bali! Food, nice and loads to chose between, but nothing we havnt seen or tried anywhere else. Locals… ok friendly but nothing more. Local respect for nature? NONE! Indonesians are not the slightest taking care of the environment, not understanding that it’s their cash cow, that they sacrifice. They fucked up by not valuing and protecting what was once special, like they did in French Polynesia. Fellow tourists, half extreme wealthy other half surfing hippies… All in all, we like it, it’s fine but NOTHING special and sure ain’t as “perfect paradise” people say it is! Guess if people can’t afford to visit places like French Polynesia, Mozambique or Maldives, then they think this is paradise, and yes let us leave them in the believe.

this reminds me of what happened to Boracay in the Philippines. The tagline back in the 2000s was "come before it's gone" - referring to the overdevelopment of the island destroying it's image as an unspoiled paradise. Boracay is now completely commercialized, the lure is gone and it's now "overrated" because the overdevelopment has destroyed it's natural beauty (granted it still gets tourists, but people don't flock to it like they used to). And that development won't stop - it's too valuable a cash cow for developers not to take advantage of it. My condolences to Bali. There is a silver lining, though: people moved on to different islands in search of what Bali/Boracay used to be and it gives a chance for other Indonesian islands to prosper from tourism. I'm sure there are other Indonesian islands being discovered as alternatives and we'll probably hear more about Lombok being the next big thing if it isn't already

What I hate the most about tourists ruining Bali is the fact that there is literally no other place in the world like Bali's local culture in Indonesia or the world. Bali's Hinduism is different from the rest of the world. I find it extremely offensive that a lot of tourists seem to care more about beaches and night life than learning the history of why this place is special. If they just want to party and take photos, there's plenty of other places where they can go. Instead I feel like a lot of foreign tourists just mindlessly want to go to Bali because of FOMO from social media or they want to show off. Some don't even know Bali is in Indonesia.

The biggest problem with ANY tourist destination is the UTTER LACK OF RESPECT for the locals shown by the tourists who'd trash the place up, leaving others to clean up after them. This is not something that FOREIGN tourists do but all tourists do even to their OWN tourist destinations in their OWN country. For example, Australian tourists who visit Australian Native Aborigine sacred sites, instead of taking their rubbish with them, would simply throw and scatter them about the sites without a single care in the world. Or, urinate and defecate around the sites which are the burial places of indigenous natives. Imagine doing this in your own cemeteries where your own loved ones are buried! Little wonder that places like Uluru (Ayers Rock) have banned climbing onto it. It is also bad enough that the once pristine mountains of the Himalayans have been now turned into gigantic rubbish dump by irresponsible mountain climbing tourists. When people don't behave responsibly and have no respect for the area they are visiting, what is to be expected especially when what they are doing is spoiling the place for everyone else - including even their own future generations. Places like Bali has to simply buckle down and lay down the "Riot's Act". Sure, there are those immature juveniles who'd whine and complain, "But ma fweedum ...". I don't think that the Balinese will miss those types who'd vandalize their homes (Bali itself).

From what I heard, only Southern Balinese is complaining about overtourism, the Northern part on the other hand, has been persuading the central government to build an airport somewhere in the Northern part of Bali, because unfortunately, transportation in North Bali is still not as integrated as it's Southern counterpart, so tourists typically don't want to bother exploring the North Let's hope the central government to actually go along with the Northern Balinese aspirations soon, the last time I've been to Southern Bali last year, I gotta admit the traffic barely resemble the Bali I remember their traffic 4 years before that, to the point that even Jakarta's traffic feels more forgiving sometimes

that is why and more western tourists prefer and love Siargao because it is more authentic, raw, and totally not yet over crowded and over developed, well, I guess right now. Siargao is just pure paradise, love, and fun. Siargao is Bali 50 years ago.

I really enjoyed he program and feel for the Bali people. When you call something paradise everyone will come and it will eventually change the place and people to a degree. What a beautiful culture, place and people. Tourisim helps many countries with their GDPs and is very beneficial if managed correctly. Perhaps looking at importing water to offset the tourisim influx would be helpful. With the expectation though of increased tourist numbers I think it is only realistic that the government needs to look at the issues of this type of influx with the supports services. This would include the garbage system. More people more garbage. I live in Costa Rica and we also depend on tourism to help better the GDP and lively hoods of the locals but like Covid, disasters, and things like crime if not kept in balance will create large swings in the GDP gained from such activities. I am truly impressed with your tourism police as well as they not only work with the locals but make Bali that much more appealing to the visitors. From what I could see they are doing a fantastic job which may be taken for granted at times but makes a hugh difference in the experience. I question however the low prices charged for some of the tourism packages and think that could be increased to help local funding for the growth. Taxes or a visitor fees should be in place to ensure that everyone withing the country benefits from this holiday experience but with and ephasis on helping the people by spending the money wisely and on sound programs. Pura Vida from Costa Rica and I pray you find the solutions that will benefit everyone.
