Survivorman - Les Stroud

Survivorman - Les Stroud

2 роки тому

In this episode of Directors Commentary I finally get to show you a part of the video I filmed - but that my editing team switched on me in the last minute without telling me. I was furious and this gives me the opportunity to tell you why.
Working my way through season one of Survivorman the series was still a work in progress as I got my feet wet producing Survivorman.

@@jimmy-jamesolivier-mccutch2126 He does all sorts of stupid shit like that. In one episode he dives from a cliff into a freezing cold lake and then ran to some hot springs the guide showed him and in another he climbed a bridge just to look cool. I can imagine people thinking survival is about taking stupid risks like that and ending up dead. It's easy for him to do when the local guide knows the spot well.

Yea he’s a great host. But side note camera angle plays a huge role in the vibe of a scene. Ex with the camera eye level with the character puts you the viewer on the same “level” as the character. with the camera angle lower it gives the character an authoritative position over the viewers. With a high camera angle gives the viewer a sense of authority in a scene. With the angle he chose he put us there on the couch with him. Random film facts🤷‍♂️lol

He also did another one where he was stranded on the ocean in a life raft. The raft was poorly constructed and began to leak immediately. Not a very big leak but enough to accumulate water in the bottom of the raft. Not long afterward he had developed immersion foot. In the end he had to transfer to a hard hull dinghy that he had been Towing Along on a rope mostly for holding gear. In the end it serves as a warning to yadders everywhere that life rafts may be made exceptionally poorly, because dead men rarely Sue and tell no Tales!!

Man Vs. Wild was an action sports show with occasional survival tips from a former special forces adventurer guy. How it got packaged and sold as a one stop shop for survival is a stroke of marketing and personality genius. Bear seems to be a genuinely decent man, but embraced the fantasy nature of survival shows a bit too hard. The guy had an episode where he was sprinting down a scree slope to save 2 hours on the trip off the mountain. Not exactly best survival practices for the average person.... Les has always been the real one, Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls looks up to him I'm sure.

Bear Grylls was always more flash than substance to me. Where Les's show seem more real and way more true to self survival. Love this Les. Thanks. In the mid-80's I spent 10 days alone in the Pecos Wilderness in NM. It was late in the summer & starting to cool off and schools had started so the usual summer bunch were not anywhere around. I saw 3 people in 10 days. My 1st day I had not acclimated to the higher elevation and was carrying to much weight and with mostly uphill hiking I tired easily so I didn't hike but maybe 3 or 4 miles before deciding to camp. I camped up the hill from the trail around 100 yds and made no fire. The next morning, late morning, I saw a lone woman jogging, with no gear on her way out of the wilderness. She never saw me. A few days later I met a couple hiking and we just said hello in passing, no conversation.

I used to watch all of the Survivorman episodes when i was a kid, and i was surprised at how much of the information and survival tactics that i still remember to this day. i have actually gotten to use a few of the skills i have learned such as firemaking, making shelter, and identifying edible plants (especially from the oregon episode, as its my home state). while i was never in any true danger or survival situations, it was very useful to experience it myself so i know exactly how to do things. I think it is truly important to not only take in as much information as possible, but to also utilize the skills you have learned so you have much more reliability. the survival information and tactics you taught through these shows is, in my opinion, the best survival tv show out there. others tend to overdramatize and spew misinformation.

Man I'm so glad I searched up survivalman on UKposts. Makes me proud that you still own the rights to your show and out it on UKposts for us because it IS a nature documentary, and tbh if I had a choice is have survivorman as my guide than man vs wild any day

Les, I have always admired your work, and never doubted your project integrity. Yours is not the first story of drama injection by networks out there. Like neekid pictures, once you hand the footage over to someone else, you lose control over it. Keep up the good work.

47:32 - 48:38 is where Les nails what I always thought about the other survival shows of the time, at the time. At the same time, he nails why I was never able to get into those shows.

Dear Les Stroud, I really have the urge inside of me to say this to you. I don't know if you will ever read this. A couple of hours ago, I came across one of your videos for the first time. I instantly got sucked into the way "a story gets told" while watching your show. I have to be honest, at first, I couldn't really believe what I was watching. I thought some storyteller genius must have written the thing you comment. And after watching this video ( the 3rd video) I know for sure, it is all you! I am so amazed at what you do. And I am so thankful, you share all those talents with us. It is so rare to find such authentic, skillful and honest people at these times while being so humble while doing so. Thank you, dear sir. You are a gift.

I grew up in Washington state out camping, hiking, what ever. When I moved to Savannah years later, I fell in LOVE with the swamps. I feared them from movies and TV. You must be careful and there are some deadly dangers, but so worth exploring. They are full of life, and beauty. Be safe but definitely experience them. You won't regret it.

I was obsessed with survivorman growing up from the very first episode when you pioneered this concept and caused it’s immense popularity. Then the copy cat shows with NONE of the integrity, NONE of the heart, or realism. They were just Hollywood mockeries like bear grylls. Taking the quick and easy path, while you the Jedi master showed an entire generation how to do things the correct way, in and out of survival situations. And if you were a fan let me tell you, it was very apparent. Love The honesty Les, That’s your brand authenticity. Thank you Les, for everything you’ve done and these commentaries are fantastic. I hope you are able to do more episodes. Rewatching these with you hearing all the back story and details is incredible! You are an inspiration man seriously.

Hey Les, you may never read this, but I thought I would write it to you anyway. All these years - loving your work in all areas, I will be honest with you. I used to think that you were always ragging on Bear Grylls and I took it like you were just being petty. But after listening to you explain the situation, I’m with you my man. I am sorry for feeling that way previously.
