This occurred after a group of some of the wealthiest people on the planet formed the American Liberty League to counter FDR's policies. They felt that their fortunes were being threatened by the government's decision to regulate Wall Street (elimination of the Laissez Faire arrangement between bankers and wall street financiers), and FDR's threat to remove the U.S. from the gold standard. They felt their fortunes were safer under a fascist regime. A similar situation exists today with one of the wealthiest industries on the planet being 'existentially' threatened by a government that's beginning to listen to climate science. Think about it. With the wealth this particular industry wields, what wouldn't it be willing to do?

I run away from preachers who tell me how to vote and politicians who tell me how to pray.

I grew up Southern Baptist myself, and remember when they added "under God" to the pledge of allegiance. I still cannot say that, to this day. But I also remember Vacation Bible School, where we children would walk down the aisle of the sanctuary in the morning exercises every day singing "Onward Christian Soldier, marching as to war!, With the Cross of Jesus, going on before." Talk about indoctrination! We didn't realize it at the time, but it was happening to us from the age of 7 years old. I didn't realize how bad it was til I got away from the Southern Baptist doctrine and started going to an American Baptist church. I read a book they were studying called "True Believers", and realized how easily people are brainwashed. For the last 50 years, I've been making sure that doesn't happen to me again or any of my kids.

My parents watched their church slowly politicize during COVID. They're not right wing so noticed it quickly but also the people around them, friends and family, are all reactionary conservatives, so they were used to tolerating it. I told them if they ever hear a preacher say anything about politics, you don't go back. There's a good reason we separate the two. These people are ripe for manipulation.

I get what you're saying, but many people left church precisely because of such people as these. These extremists often gather for "worship". I note that, while Jesus was a faithful Jew, and often preached on the steps of the house of worship, Scripture only describes His presence at three formal services: at His dedication, or bris, as an infant; at His bar mitzvah, at age 12; at the start of His ministry, at age 30. He still fulfilled the covenant, paying the temple tax, and celebrating the Passover, but He was very much disappointed in the power culture of the patriarchal and oppressive formal religious organization. He said that we should not pray to be seen, making long public prayers like pharisees, but should go pray privately, and often went off by Himself to pray. I get it, what you are saying, but I might paraphrase something Jesus said, by saying a majority of those extremist so-called christians may go to a "church", but they do not have "church" in their heart. As a prophet said, of Yahweh, "I do not want your [rituals]. I want a circumcised heart." As Jesus said, He wanted worship, "not in the temple, but in Spirit and in Truth."

To that, I respond that Christianity is highly relevant. It begins with the chief end of man: to glorify God and enjoy him forever. That gives every life dignity and purpose. Second it induces a sense of humility. One works for the glory of God. It is not man first. It is God first. One's every effort is to glorify God. That has real practical effects. Adultery does not glorify God. Put God first, and adultery disappears. With it, out of wedlock pregnancy disappears. Abortion is no longer an issue. Keep the Sabbath Holy. Worship one day a week is a time of rest and reflection. Can we not benefit from just one day for rest and reflection. Honor your father and mother. How we need that in our society in a world of broken families. Do not bear false witness. How many scams have been played. Could we not benefit from honesty. Don't murder. Murder includes extreme anger. With all of the road rage, can't we do with less murder and the anger that leads to it? Don't covet. How much of our conflict is based on covetousness. Can't we benefit from that? No, a nation of strong marriages, who attend church regularly, who are faithful to their spouses, who wait until marriage to have sex, and who work diligently for the glory of God imperil no one. They are not dangerous.
