As a fellow DCAU lover I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video! It cleared up a lot of questions I had about BTAS, TNBA and JLU! It's also amazing to see another person so passionate and particular about the shows we all love so much! We CARE! As soon as that Joker quote came up near the end of the video, the comment about the ears being too long I was like THANK YOUUU! SOMEONE ELSE NOTICED! The ROTJ movie and the JLU Wild Card two parter, not to mention the other JL episodes the Joker was featured in always made my head explode, just because of that one line! Plus I think this is the only subject that I'm able to think about and follow as fast as you were able to talk. Awesome work!

Aaaahhh I see.... so you think that you get to decide what is important to other people? Not to mention what this guy has based a part of his channel on? Something that people have watched, interacted with,, loved, and that has made them happy? It's interesting that someone who doesn't care would even bother reading my comment that came from a place of love, and drop a comment like that just for the hell of it... Maybe he wears different suits because they get damaged, so he goes on missions with whatever suit is undamaged while repairing the others between missions. The reason he always uses the JL suit on JL missions is that that's his best one, and it's more flexible and provides better defense against space mumbo jumbo or whatever, so he always tries to save it for heavy-duty missions.

@@dcauwatchtower Actually the theory of him having one batsuit might not be true. Because in justice league he has the TNBA Batmobile and that could fit the idea that it’s the same batsuit, BUT. In savage time I think it was when Batman is all armored up and stuff. You see the BTAS Batmobile in the back. So his equipment must go through alterations.

I'm a contributing writer to the DCAU and former producer at Kids WB, and the simple answer is that one of the key reasons for the designs change with each show so that the toy companies can release a new line of toys.

I loved James Woods as Owlman in _Crisis on Two Earths._ He's exactly how I always imagined Batman's voice: cool, calculating indifference combined with that skin-prickling edge of rage and madness makes the hairs rise on the back of the neck. I've always seen Batman as a slow-motion train crash, two parts tragedy and one part horror held back only through sheer force of Will.

Im late to the party, forgive me, but this is how I've always interpreted Bruce's JL suit being different than his NA suit: "It's the same suit, just perceived differently by those around Batman. In the New Adventures Bruce is a huge wide necked brute made of all muscle. Coupled with the red sky it gives him an almost otherworldly look. Muted greys and solid blacks. Both his partners and his enemies see him as this big hulking figure. In Justice League/Unlimited, Bruce is on equal footing with heroes just as powerful and even more powerful than he is, so they see his suit for what it is.....a costume. Bruce isnt hiding in the shadows, he is standing next to demi-gods and warriors. And in that light, the hint of blue can be seen in his sea of black and grey. Standing next to Clark and Diana, Bruce doesn't dwarf them so he seems alot average and more lean in his musculature. Its just the perception of the character that changes, not the suit." It's possible he doesn't completely retire a suit when he gets a new one. I buy new t-shirts and then I wear the old ones less... but I don't stop wearing the old ones. Very well researched I like the video!

SEO Toy Review I like think when he gets a new one he simply switches back and fourth depending on the damage that each one has sustained or the technology in each. But as he gets older he tends to stick with very specific ones just modifying them as time goes on. Basically putting a new paintjob and new wheels on an old car. It's the same batsuit but with minor differences that allow for different things to be done and to look different. It's not that our perceptions changed nor is it the suits. It's more based around what is better for batman as time goes on.

They pulled a character replacement with no explanation in The Batman. seasons 1 and 2 had Detective Yin season 3 introduced Barbara Gordon/Batgirl Batgirl straight up replaced Yin with no explanation as to why. Off topic from this comment, but just wanted to mention that.

The reason it looks different, Batman has multiple bat suits and he's refining the details and making subtle improvements each time, like Tony Stark, does with the Iron Man suits. There might be heavier armor or thicker fabric. Plus he has quite the inventory of spares, so it might not be uncommon for him to grab stuff off the rack or shelves. Also, he may have a special heavier armored suit to hang about with the JLA.

Besides, look in the comics, there was the all-black suit that lasted between 1995 to 1999, sometimes it was ana ll black bodysuit, others it had separate boots. It even had leg fins for a time.

Personally I feel like he had 3 Batsuits in the DCAU. 1) Batman: TAS 2) The New Batman Adventures 3) Batman Beyond (red logo) I feel his JL and JLU suits are the same as TNBA suit and that the Justice suit is just a result of that show having a brighter, more colorful tone. If you look at Superman's TAS suit and JL suit, the only difference is his shorts being a brighter red, or more like less shadowy. If you need to make a more colorful Batman, you highlight in blue. You can't deny that Justice League was a more colorful show, especially the Justice League Unlimited episodes. As for why he changed them, well I can imagine it's like he said in Batman Beyond. His old suits just got beat up. There's plenty of instances in TAS, TNBA, JL, and JLU of them getting torn or scorched or otherwise damaged, and you can only patch clothes so much before they are just ruined. Not to mention he probably felt a change be needed after Dick Grayson left, and without a bright red sidekick, he went back to basics, ditching the bright yellow oval around the bat logo and going with the all black and grey to be more like his year one self. Remember, when he started he had no Batsignal, and I always felt the yellow oval represented the Batsignal. If you notice, Dick Grayson's Robin from Batman TAS used green, but Tim Drake from TNBA ditched any green in exchange for even more black. Batman was more brooding after Dick Grayson left. By the time a 50-something Bruce donned the suit that would eventually become Terry's suit, the constant abandonment of his Robins and even Batgirl made his suit even more broodier and less fun, ditching the cape, but since he still needed a logo, kept the robin red because it's scarier than yellow or green, but still keeps a piece of Robin with him even though he has nobody left.

It’s a completely different suit to me it’s simile but the ears are longer… it looks like he slimmed down cause he was an imposing figure in TAS & TNBA.. the utility belt is different, the boots, cowl, cape and gloves are like a dark navy blue when in the TNBA it was black and the grey for the suit is a little darker and he does seem a lot colder in justice league

I absolutely loved this video! In my head I've always just explained it as him swapping out suits due to wear and tear or making upgraded variants similar to pass suits. Honestly it never bothered me that much but it's fun to think about!

Here’s my logic, Batman wears the justice league suit with the more blue and heals and stuff because he’s with the team and doesn’t need to be as stealthy. He also needs the metal utility belt instead of the cloth one because he’s going up agiants “bigger and badder” villains. His other suit he uses when he is in Gotham without the team because it’s more low key and stealthy. That’s my way to reason the 2 suits but idk whatever floats your bat... get it, floats ur bat instead of floats ur boat. Brb gonna go die

What if the cosmetic changes are _deliberate_ using a pre-Beyond stealth-mode prototype to alter small details as a way to screw up identity-recognition software? He would still be recognizable to _people_ but machines would find the constant shifting of details hard to recognize. The Captcha Crusader.

If you take the Joker's merged apperance from the JL series combining his TAS and TNAS look. Then I think it's simpler to say it's a literal art style choice and not an in universe different suit. As far as bridging the gap between TNAS and JL suits go. That way you if they ever did an updated Beyond look in that bat cave in say the Epilogue period you'd likely see a retroactive look of the JL design batsuit since that was the one they were focusing on anyway in that story sequence.

Yeah, the fact that he used different suits is a logical explanation to me but to the outside world, I read that the art style changed after TAS because black paper was getting too expensive. Today that would be less of a problem though.

Okay here's my idea. He doesn't have just one suit, he has many different parts for one suit. So he has multiple belts and masks, and other stuff which is kind of interchangeable. He just usually keeps the longer ear mask and the metallic belt in the watch tower.

Maybe he has the multiple suits so one gets damaged, he can switch to another. This explains the Static Shock switches fairly well. He was using the JL suit at the time, but at times it had gotten to damaged too badly to be used. So he pulled a previous version out of mothballs to use until the JL suit got repaired.

This is how I've thought about it. His line in Beyond about lending Terry "one of his old costumes" cements that he always has multiples on hand. I also wouldn't be surprised if he keeps spare constumes in various vehicles. His first appearance in Static Shock had the old Batwing as well so it's plausible imo that he made a bunch of spares during the TNBA era and tossed em into his vehicles for whenever he needs them.

My headcannon; The TNBA suit is the one in the Batcave, and used when Batmans point of origin is Gotham. The JL suit is a "to go" suit used when Batman either can not reach or does not have time to reach the Batcave. This explains why both can overlap, and why the TNBA suit is used during Return of Joker, and why that is the one in the display case during Batman Beyond.

That might even be canon. I remember a comic where the artist of the comic (I think it may have been Curt Swan) finds himself on Earth 1. Recognizing where he is, he goes to the Daily Planet to find Clark Kent, who of course realizes the man must be from Earth Prime as he knows his secret identity. As Superman is flying the man home, Curt asks a bunch of questions like, "How do you keep your clothes from wrinkling when you fold them into the pocket on your cape? How do you keep your spit curl when you're flying?" Superman cuts him off and answers, simply, _"I'm Superman."_

I really like the idea that what we are seeing is really a combination of differences in light, in-universe interpretation, and extra costumes. Batman has also wrecked costumes so severely on occasion that they should be a total loss and result in total replacement, and those replacements can either be identical or modifications. So he might have a dozen identical costumes, but lost three which are replaced by updates, and he could still have one or more from an older design run. The belts are also separate from the costumes so he can mix and match there too and it is easy to imagine keeps belts like tool boxes for different jobs. The idea that each show is its own lens, it’s own aesthetically different universe, is also satisfying in how it fits with the wonkiness of comic books.

I think the TNBA and JL(U) Batsuits are the same, just drawn differently to match the art style of those respective shows. So in my eyes, Batman canonically has only had 4 suits. The prototype/first suit (probably inspired by first appearance batman), the BTAS suit with the yellow and black emblem, TNBA/JL(U) suit, then the Beyond suit. Hope this helps anyone who’s trying to figure this whole thing out.

I found another continuity when I rewatched TNBA AND BTAS shows. When it’s mad love, in the flashback we see that poison ivy is in the cell, and poison ivy came out in season one episode 5 and Harley was first shown in the series in episode 22, and the continuity is with the comic and episode, in the comic it’s the BTAS suit and the show it’s TNBA, this also helps with what you said in the video saying that why the show is showing the wrong costume in the episode, I don’t understand why they don’t make the BTAS suit in TNBA form, I’ve seen a custom of it online many times.

My theory is that Batman's suit with the yellow oval with bat in the middle in TBAS was that the animators wanted to keep the connection to the Tim Burton's Batman ,But as time goes by they alterations to the suit to show the growth of Batman as a superhero .

The reason he switched on and off is a combination of utility at the time and logistics. As Batman developed new suits, he was able to scatter them about in various locations for ease-of-access. There is the main suit we see that he keeps in the Batcave at any given time, but eventually he was able to keep a suit at Wayne Enterprises, in the Batmobile, a few on the Watchtower, etc. Plus, when he travels the world (or universe) he may lose the suit to damage. I can't imagine him making long-distance trips so far from Gotham without backups for his backups, so it's probably even greater than I am suggesting. There are likely three copies of any Batsuit within his vicinity at any given time when you consider his cars, buildings, homes, etc. Can you imagine Bats failing a mission because he didn't have a spare part-to-entirety of another suit? I can't.

I always liked the original btas suit; yellow oval around logo= GENIUS. It's not at all practical, but I like it. That's always been batman's suit to me.

I think I prefer the Bat symbol on Bruce's pre-BTAS suit and then again from TNBA onwards. IMO, the yellow oval shaped symbol in BTAS looks better in live action than animation. In most shots of BTAS, the symbol looks awesome. But there are some shots where it looks a bit out of shape and out of proportion. I guess the animators found it a bit difficult to animate it in certain angle shots. But the symbol without the yellow oval clearly looks like it was easier to animate.

To back up the theory that the New Animated Series suit = The JL suit, there's an episode where JL batman and Wonder Woman travel to the future and meet Batman beyond... And in Batman beyond, it's basically well established that the NAS Suit is from that universe/arc... So maybe they are the same suit... But changed slightly in design to suit the respective TV Shows animation style! Also... I liked the vid... So thumbs up 👍

My favourite Bat-suit was the one he wore in the original TAS. I also loved Mike Parobeck's art in the comics. Puckett/Parobeck/Burchett did they best ones in that line.

I always figured Batman's JLU suit had more tools for fighting aliens and had more devices for connecting to more machinery and vehicles that he wouldn't necessarily need in Gotham. Also, maybe this suit has a layer of protection from radiation since he's in space a lot. Whereas his TNAS suit had his normal tools.

Batman buys all his suits in bulk to hide the orders. Essentially, I’ve decided, EVERY suit is a new suit and any changes are due to whatever batch he’s currently on and no one is ever gonna say anything because no one expects BATMAN to change his costume so no one says anything and he’d never admit that the March batch was slightly more blue than he expected

The theory I've always believed is that the Joker is actually a manifested archetype, essentially a god. And not just in the comics, either; Heath Ledger was a Method actor, and used many of the same techniques shamans use to channel archetypal entities, which means he was _literally murdered by the Joker._ The reason the Joker seems to escape death so often is that he has manifested in different people at different times, each of whom contributed something different to his identity at the time. In Promethea, Alan Moore expresses much the same view. His expy of the Joker, the Painted Doll, turns out to be (minor spoiler) an AI inhabiting a whole series of robotic bodies, each of them believing themselves to be the only one and activating in sequence on the destruction of the previous one.

In the comments of a UKposts video about the Thanos Wins comics, we got into an argument about why the Silver Surfer was black instead of shiny and reflective. My theory was that the colour change was caused by rocking the Uni-Force, while others believed it must be from absorbing the Cosmic Control Rod or merging with Galactus' Power Cosmic. The argument wasn't going anywhere, so I tracked down the writer, Donny Cates, on Twitter and asked him about it. His entire answer copied and pasted: "Because it looks cool" The sad fact is that _we_ care about explanations, narratives, and coherent canon a lot more than the creators do. For most of them it's just a paycheque.

The NBA suit and the JLU suits are the same ones, the differences are a result of the artstyle shift in production, and if not, than were essentially saying that Bruce lost a ton of muscle during JLU, and only put it all back on around the time of the return of the joker flashback

maybe the reason he uses the older suit in those static shock episodes and the beyond flashback is because the justice league batsuit got damaged off-screen and is going under repairs in those instances, i mean seriously he goes from city to city fighting aliens and other super-heroes' rogues gallery, there's bound to be some damage on the new suit that'll put it out of commission, think of it like that time terry just went out with a utility belt and domino mask when his suit was under control by that robo-ghost guy, heck that same episode pretty much confirmed that bruce doesn't really have spare versions of the same suit, so, it kinda fits? PS: this is off-topic but the yellow beyond suit could also just be an updated version of the flame-proof suit from the new batman adventures, i mean they're both cape-less, don't seem to have a cowl opening, and yellow is one of the colors of fire and seemingly the main color of the sun, and the sun is very hot, so, yea? i don't know, it's just my two-cents on the matter

I have my own head canon to this but yeah I agree with the final explanation. Star Wars Rebels and Clone wars are in the same overall Star Wars universe but they look different, just a certain visual alternate depiction of canonical events.

About the outfits though, I personally never saw a difference. Only in colors sometimes. Like, one is full black, second one is slightly blue, and the third one is more blue.

A difference in suit design between page and screen is not a conundrum that needs to be explained. That’s like asking for an in-universe explanation as to why every female character’s body shrunk, and head enlarged by three sizes in 1997, or why Joker’s eyes inverted color, or why Two-Face went from an ethnically-ambiguous subtle Billy Dee Williams design to stark Caucasian (also now missing his right eyebrow). It’s just the artist at work.

I love seeing this kind of deconstruction -- there's similar continuity issues with the Starfleet uniform first seen in The Wrath of Khan all the way up until just before TNG -- but yeah, ultimately I think they're just the same costume seen through a different storytelling lens. Keep it up. :)

I agree with Tim Levins about the artistic decision. It was a surprise for me as a kid when they changed Batman’s costume from the TAS to TNBA, especially the bat symbol. That being said, it all boils down to different artists taking their interpretation on Batman. Besides, most kids aren’t or weren’t at the time picky about wardrobe continuity or how each character looked. As long as everyone knows who each of the characters are, I believe that’s all that matters.

I see it as Batman only has three (4 including Beyond technically) batsuits. The pre BTAS, BTAS, and TNBA. JL/U is just the new adventures suit but drawn to match the colors of the rest of the League. It’s a brighter, more colorful show so Batman is going to look a bit brighter and slightly different. But when you watch the darker TNBA/Beyond shows he just looks darker. But either way it’s still the same costume.

I feel like when they changed his batsuit to the third one it wasn't something that batman actually did in the DCAU. He didn't get a new suit it was just a new style choice by the developers. That's why in the flashback we see him in the new suit. Anyone who has watched the original BTAS will know it doesn't fit the tone of TNBA or the justice league. Its because when it was first made they didn't know there would be this whole universe. When the batsuit changed that was just the writers trying to make the BTAS batman fit into this new tone and style. That's also why in batman beyond we only see the tnba suit and not any others. Every bat suit he's ever worn are all one in the same except for the first one he ever wore. That is also the reason we See him sporadically switch costumes from the tnba suit to the justice league suit. THEY ARE THE SAME SUIT. JUST LIKE HOW THEY ARE THE SAME SUIT BATMAN WORE IN BTAS. Tnba and justice league had different styles and colour palets so they had to change them accordingly.

They are likely the same suit in TNBA, JL/JLU, Static Shock, and B&HQ. I understand what you’re saying and would agree they are all the same if not for the flashback instances we do get of the first two costumes. Clearly those are intended to be unique.

Hey great video man. This in my opinion was always a huge continuity error for me that made the DCAU messy. I sort of see where that dude is coming from where he says there’s basically one suit just different art designs. However. Like you said earlier. The show static shock..it shows both the JL costume and TNBA suit. So that’s what confused me. I worry about this stuff the same as you guys keep up the amazing content. 🙏🏻

Another batsuit inconsistency in Mad Love is that Poison Ivy is already in Arkham, which means "Pretty Poison" already happened. And Batman was obviously wearing the BTAS suit in there so... you get what I mean.

The thing that stuck out to me was the line from Batman of the Future, about most of his other costumes being damaged, you know, bullet holes and all that. Maybe the slight different looks are from when he replaced the costume, but the materials he could get at that moment were slightly different, say he's got a constant three spares, when one gets damaged it needs replacing so he buys in the materials, but they are not exactly the same, sometimes there's more blue, sometimes Alfred has made the bat insignia slightly different, it's still based on the same basic design though.
