Rechargeable batteries last way longer if we do not charge them up to 100% or fully discharge them. This is particularly important for batteries in expensive devices like smartphones or tablets because repairing a defective battery is expensive.
It took Apple many years till, finally, the iPhone 15 can automatically stop charging at 80% and so extend the lifetime of your battery considerably. Maybe Android phones were faster.
This is the best solution, but today, we will solve the problem for all other devices, including our Dashboard Tablet in the kitchen. As a bonus, I will show you why we have this tablet and what it displays. And I will reveal the secret behind this number.

Maybe you also look at the "Chargie" product (link in the video description). It is a USB switch that works directly with an app on the smartphone without infrastructure.

but there is a second truth about the rule of thumb: that 20 - 80% rule is only beneficial for certain chemistries. It is stupid in case you are working with a LFP or LiFePo4 battery which you can simply run from 0% to 100% and vice versa as long as you take for 1 tiny point: if charged fully you have to start discharging afterwards and same for the opposite of discharging fully cause that will require charging afterwards. Never let them rest fully or empty. We have seen on our old Winston cells bought in 2014 over 2500 cycles with a degreadation of less than 10% in total , a lot less and only in the last year we recogniced an increasing degradation - used as solar storage. This means: if you discharge to 0% at 5 am and it is still dark outside you have to charge the battery from the grid, you can not wait till 9 am and a good solar power production.

Hi Andreas, I use a similar system in my house, but instead of using a new tablet, I repurposed an old one with a broken battery. I followed the Great Scott video titled "Solved Samsung's Swelling Battery Problem! (Batteryless Phone)" and replaced the old battery with a diode. In your case, you can remove the new, good battery and replace it with a diode. This way, you'll have a free battery, a fully functional tablet, and one less potential fire hazard (the battery) in your home. Merry Christmas and I love your videos.

Cool, but unless you have your tablet connected to an UPS is not going to be cool to see the tablet restart when power outages or , current fluctuations which will damage components …

This is yet another reason why root is so useful. There is a charging governor for Magisk, or you can easily script your own with Automate or Tasker. This way, you can charge the battery to a "storage voltage" and power the device from USB without charging/discharging the battery. Too bad Google and certain apps combat root, while not giving us control over our devices without root.

Another possibility could be that they include this small piece of code... Reading all comments it seems that the functionality is more common in new devices and the problem will probably be solved over the next years.

I solved it completely in software by unlocking the bootloader in my xiaomi tablet, rooting it with Magisk and installing the Advanced Charging Controller Magisk Module. Keeps the battery always between 70 and 80%. Your solution is probably simpler, because unlocking the bootloader and rooting can be very complicated as vendors try to lock that down more and more.

I remember having a discussion with several other Home Assistant users about this exact topic. We discussed making a Blueprint that would make implementation easier. We spent quite a bit of time discussing battery levels and how often to fully charge the device. We agreed on a month to fully charge as well. Perhaps I shall finally write the Home Assistant blueprint.

I did this for several Android phones using Tasker and the AutoInput plugin. My first iteration used a Govee wifi/BT plug that could work on just BT (no network available) to switch the AC to the USB charger.. The second iteration used a DSD Tech BT relay to switch the USB DC power to the phone. In my use case, the whole thing had to be self contained with no need for a network or server. Using AutoInput to operate the Govee app and Bluetooth Serial Terminal app may seem kludgy, but it works.

I had that Idea some time ago, but since I didn't want to install additional software on my phone, I built a microcontroller into my charging cable which would monitor the current while charging. If the current goes down below maybe 50%, it recognises this as approaching the last part of the charge curve and imediatly cut the power. That way it would not go all the way to 100% but maybe stop at 90%. Unfortunatly it wasn't that reliable and the phone sometimes ended up uncharged... your solution is definitly better

Good idea! But these Smartphones have their own "intelligent charging". So it is not easy to "trick" them. I have so many apps on my iPhone that one more is not an issue...

Should be easily circumvented by using an average Current of the last 5-10 seconds or not? From testing with QuickCharge i can says that around 0.3Amps Equalizer 80% charges.

@@Haldi4803 Yes maybe averaging for a longer time would help! I didn't take the time to record a full charge cycle to investigate how long the averaging should be to avoid short cutouts etc... I did it just as a "hobbyproject" to see if it would work that easy ;-)

5:40 The HA companion app also tells you if the phone is charging. So, before cutting power to your phone, you could check that it was in charge on a charger (you don't know which one, but that's a start). A more foolproof version would be to check which Bluetooth devices are close to the charger (either because you're using a Bluetooth-capable MCU and a relay board to switch the charger of *or* because you have one charger and one ESPresense per room*). One you know which phone is using which charger, you can run your automation with minimal risk of complaint from the Mrs. *if it detects two iPhones, the one with the best RSSI should be the one on that charger.

At work we have a QA wall with many phones testing our SW, and they're constantly connected to power. Finding a way to make them not die prematurely due to battery expansion turned out to be a lot harder than expected, we have a "smart" USB-hub we can turn on/off ports via an API, but this regularly fails (both phones not managing to reconnect, or the hub doing weird stuff). Even though most/many Android phones has options to limit battery level while iPhone doesn't we have yet for an iPhone to fail, while the Android tally is about 20% a year (and yes, we have many iPhones as well).

Good information! With the new PD standard it seems to be more complex to get a phone charged. That is why I decided to switch mains of the charger. That seems to be a "usual" scenario covered by most chargers.

Many years ago, I told my colleagues I was on the "money diet". The calories only count if you paid for them. The less you spend in food, the lower your weight should be. If your friends buy lunch for you, it's zero calories. I intended to write a dodgy diet book based on the idea, hoping to make myself as rich as some of those other fad diet book authors, but the concept is too simple to be able to fill a whole book with it.

I don’t know. My iPhone 13 Pro has been with me since october of 2021 and I’ve been fast-charging it daily. The only battery-preserving measure I’ve enabled is the setting that waits with charging it from 80 to 100% until an hour or two before my morning alarm goes off. Almost 900 charging cycles later and the battery is still healthy at 96%. I think for a lot of us technical people we are prone to be afraid of the discomfort a worn out battery would cause us to the point where we subject ourselves to more discomfort by trying to prevent it. Of course, your scenario of a always plugged-in tablet is very different and it makes a lot of sense to do this stuff there. But that’s the exception. But just let your phone be your phone and a battery replacement two or three years in wouldn’t be the end of the world. With a replacement battery after three years, your phone could last you five or six years. With no replacement and careful babying the battery and refusing a new one, you could make it four years. And then the phone is old and not worth the investment anymore so you get a brand new one. Especially if the old battery is properly recycled, doing a battery replacement is probably the most ecological solution.

good luck finding a good replacement battery for iphone, 99% that are sold on ebay or other sites are either salvaged or fake batteries. You could always go the official route if you want to pay 150+$ for a battery replacement, I guess it could be worth when you spent 1k$ for a phone.

@@D4no00​​⁠it’s $89 for an iPhone 13 Pro if you go through Apple. That’s an OEM battery and replacement by one of their technicians. I think that’s very reasonable. The prices they charge for some repairs (like the back glass) are ridiculous and borderline criminal but when it comes to batteries they’re very reasonable.

I agree with your argument. One of the reasons I use iPhones is their long software support. I keep the new phone for 3 years and then my wife keeps it for the next three years (agreed with her as she is not a techie). So we have a new phone every three years and use it for 6 years. I had to change the battery in the past, and, as you write, it was not a big thing. I had to wait for an hour and got my phone back. We will see if this is still needed with the new procedure.

The new Google Pixel phones have the capability to limit charge to 80%, too. The issue is - it's enabled only overnight, based on your wake-up alarm time. The phone stays charged 80% the whole night and it gets topped up to 100% in the morning before the first alarm goes off. There is no option to start charging again based on a lower threshold, to cycle one permanently attached to the charger. If you charge the phone during the day it goes straight to 100%.

Thank you for your effort and merry X-mas! My Android offers the option to stop charging at 85%. I used a tablat as a display for ioBroker connected 24/7 to the power supply over years. No Problem But after first discharge and charge cycle after years the battery bloated. My business laotop is now connecter for 8 years nearly 24/7 to power. No problem. But indeed I control the SoC of my Pylontecs of my small Victron backup installation für the heating by ioBroker.

My smartphone runs on SailfishOS, where thanks to the power of open source we have an app that allows to manage the battery charge and stop it at a certain level (i.e. no extra h/w needed). But that's only my main phone. I do have other devices that instead runs Android, and on those I was wondering why there is not such an option. So THANK YOU for showing a project that by using some additional inexpensive h/w can achieve the same result.

Hey, I have Samsung A52S, my phone charge to 85% and stop, same with my Dell Laptop. This is standard in my phone and Laptop. Case is not same in older phones and devices. Thanks for video

Simplest way to check battery level is termux and termux-battery-status. Then you can have more complex charging protocol. For example you might want more voltage on Monday mornings.

Hello Andreas! Thanks for another interesting video. Do you estimate the wear out of the battery after, let's say, a year with this limiting feature enabled? The thing is - there is extended cycling in that case, so because of constant charging/discharging you can wear out the battery even faster than in the case when it is just always connected. I had an HP laptop that just turned off charging at 80% and kept working from the mains - so the battery was at 80% always, but without cycling... I think, extending battery life should be implemented in a way like that...

There must be a way with only software in the tablet/phone... I guess I will have to check all the comments to find the good tips. Once I acquired the last phone (the demo phone) of a kind in a shop, it was Samsung and the phone was permanently connected to a charger, so I was worried... I was even more worried that there was a special mode/software active for demo and the phone was not acting as expected. I had to find the trick to get out of that demo mode. But it mean that it is possible by software on the phone to stop from charging (my Pixel has a smart mode too to keep at 80% until just before I wake up). Anyway, thank you for the video.

Battery charging was a subject for my whole masters & a year in bachelors. Even my work company I was in has a specific division for just battery charge cycles where it displays 100% change only at 80-92% of battery real charge. Won't believe how many phone from a decade ago do this, specially with Qualcomm's quick charge. Higher current directly to & from battery, or more cycles from full to 0 cause the most damage whereas high voltage charging can be balanced while general public fooled with wrong display. Even phone software nowadays just apply a stricter charging curve & display real values only when the software mode is enabled. So instead of targeting anywhere from 85-92%, it'll hard target the set value.

6:21 for anyone trying to do this in NodeRED for one reason or another, you may find that the sensor entities of your phone are not refreshed in real-time in NodeRED. To fix this, you create a helper for the sensor you're trying to analyze (like the battery percentage) and then use a Home Assistant automation to set the helper to the same value as the actual sensor. Then you can use the helper in your flow.

Do note: that some chargers if you cut off the mains supply, can cause unregulated voltages/currents on the 5V charging port which if not handled by the phone can damage it.

I think you can improve on/off charging by putting control over it right to the smartphone/tablet. No need in extra complexity by bringing external entities like HA. You can use automation apps like MacroDroid or Tasker for this.

@@AndreasSpiess I propose avoiding the use of traditional apps and instead utilizing macro automation apps like MacroDroid or Tasker, etc. With these applications, you can create simple rules to manage and limit the charging of your devices.

I prefer Tasmota over ESP home since I don't need to give it fixed IP and I can gift the device to someone else. However, Sonoff has local mode ("SonoffLAN"), so it doesn't need to be flashed anymore, I still flash due to privacy reasons. Also, Andreas, if it's not too much of hassle, try to get a second-hand old device rather than buying a brand-new device consuming instead of recycling is just waste of resources. I am also not sure why did you over complicated this problem, you could have just rooted your Android and install battery limiter and use 3-meter cable to prevent quick charge. Overall as always very educational video! :D

80% is not a myth. Battery is electoric-and-chemistry (not sure if I translated it right eithout a dictionary). At high state of charge the chemical reaction runs on highest intensives. OnePlus phones have a great feature. They charge up to 80% at night. Then charging stops. It will resume at a moment so it will be fully charged by alarm time. So I disconnect it from charger at 100%. So the time the battery is at 100% is reduced to minimum. I was thinking about the same as you did in you video, great job! Now I'm wondering if I can do something for charging a phone in the car. I don't like it's at 100% when I'm driving all day long. Disconnecting a charger will not be an option since location history will not be as accurate. It feels like I need to do some current limitation to keep the battery at about 80%. The charge level reporting is not an issue, since I'm a software developer. I can build a small app which will read it and will send it over a Bluetooth to arduino/esp device. Sounds like an interesting project!

I assume you could cut the USB power with the blue sxwitch I used for our tablet. It should work in your car, too. It has an ESP8266, so you can create your own program.

I assume that if you config to run GPS service with unrestrained power mode it will keep location accurate, limiting current might cut off charging at all. If cutting off is what you look for, you can use BLE powered device like chargie or custom made with ESP. @@remy44444 if phone consumes, for example, 0.2A, and power supply provides the same current + few percents then state of charge will stay on same level. Nothing will cut charging. I've been in this situation when my cable connectors were not tight enough. Rooting the phone is not my cup of tea. I've been doing that for several years on different phones. That's nonsense...

The lenovo tablet i use as a dashboard has a built in battery protection feature to only use 40-60% and automatically discharge it sometimes.

if the tablet is always plugged in and the hardware is designed smartly, then it won't touch battery once it is fully charged. Letting charge to drop always below 20% is not necessary for battery life. Harmful for Lithium batteries are constant voltage phase of charge, specially last moments of it; discharging to too low; heat during charging or discharging; charging to overvoltage even it drops lower once charging is stopped. There have been some tests showing fast charge may improve battery life, but i don't have opinion or fact for that. edit: Constant voltage part of charge is totally fine if voltage is a step below recommended max voltage

I do not know what you mean with "smartly". I assume the circuit stops charging at around 4.2 volts and, with a hysteresis, starts charging a few mV lower. But I did not do measurements. It is anyway not recommended to store batteries fully charged. And newer phones charge the battery at the end of the night to reduce the 100% charged time. With my tests, fast charge always came with a high temperature, so I cannot believe it is good (as you write, batteries do not like heat)

@@AndreasSpiess by smartly i mean in device disconnects battery, use only mains power to power itself and starts charging battery again only after it has consumed some electricity from battery. i believe by experience and chemistry that this is healthier than charging & discharging constantly - as long as charging up to 100% won't happen more than couple times in a month. some smartphones lower fast charging speed to regulate temperature keeping it below for example about 40°C. at least my current feels 40°C warm when it throttles charging power. my previous phobe didn't throttle.

The project is very nice, thank you. Regardless of the project, I do not find it wise to use a device that I paid so much money for at 20% - 80% capacity. Devices that software restrict their charge between 20-80% should also discount their prices by 20-80%..

Hi, thanks for the nice idea. Checking the Battery Level chart as of my Iphone 12 (Entity of HA Companuin App in HA) does not show a continuous value. Instead only the Levels when I swich wake up the phone. This dous not alloe the use uf your Idea. How to configure the phone to get continuous battery level sent to HA?

Thanks for the answer. I digged in detail. I see only a jump from start of charging to end of charging e. g. 20% to 100%. Nothing in between. During charging my Iphone and my Ipad are in standby.

For those who have the same Problem: I have solved it. For my configuration it was necessaty to have "Local Push" in the home network from HA to the device enabled. This can be seen in the server Menu of the HA Companion App on the Iphone or Ipad. I had to tell in the Internal URL menu the SSID of my WLAN. After this configured the Local Push was available and the Sansor is updated in 5% steps as Andreas reports.

What I miss in android phones is an actual option to get slower charging. I use a laptop brick for both my laptop and my phone, which charges quickly. But if I connect my phone in the late evening, I'd like it to charge slowly to preserve battery life. And there seems to be no such option..

Would indeed be good to have options for that in Android. I use a wireless charger powered by an not-fast phone charger. Or a USB-A to USB-C lead, connected to a not-fast phone charger. A 'not-fast' phone charger would be something that only outputs 5Volts. If you want to keep on using that laptop charger, then get a usbc-female and a usbc-male connector and only wire up the power feed itself, so the phone will only get the default 5Volts and won't be able to request a higher voltage from the laptop charger.

I do the same: e.g. using chargers with limited power delivery to charge overnight. 5V is the default for all phones. What matters is how many ampere the charger delivers. Watts = ampere * volts. So, if your phone has 20W fast charging ability, it needs a 4A charger for full charge speed. If you only use a 2A charger, you restrict it to the half.

I need a 12V car battery monitor. It's only supposed to show me the voltage of the car battery and consume little power itself. I would be very grateful for tips. Hi Andreas, i need your help regarding this topic : i'm looking for a module that sends and receives data through satellites, i've seen your old videos however the boards you're using aren't available in my country and i really need to establish a communication via satellites, the only tools i have available in my country are Lora modules + TTGO + SX1276... The IEC 62680 standard states that we can query the battery status from the device using USB-C, so we can simply use a micro controller to cut off power when it reaches a certain percent. Wouldn't this be a lot simpler? Excuse me if this is stupid, i am a newbie.

I personally use a product called 'Chargie' that does this and has the Bonus if also working in my car or wherever I bring it. The solution presented here isn't bad either. Keeping the phones battery at an optimal Voltage for longevity is nice. Having a huge battery in your phone makes it even better, as I rarely need the capacity and thus don't have any downsides besides weight and size maybe.

@@AndreasSpiess I own and have used Chargies for many years and have been very happy with them; they're great little products, and it's nice to be able to bring them on vacation or wherever and still get the same functionality because they only rely on the phone's bluetooth so no infrastructure is needed. One of the models (Gold Edition) can even use a black magic trick to keep a phone connected and streaming to Android Auto despite cutting off charging (I believe it forces the connection into a trickle-charge mode) so you can keep the phone in an ideal range while using it for navigation on road trips. Word of warning that after many years of trouble-free operation, the developer updated the app from v2 to v3 with many changes. While these changes are mostly a vast user interface improvement, this has unfortunately introduced a lot of reliability issues for myself and many others, with the phone often ending up at 100% charge overnight (not good!). The whole purpose of the app is to ensure the phone never gets fully charged, so when it doesn't do that consistently and loses trust it's no longer that useful. The developer pushes out updates very frequently (sometimes daily) but still problems persist. For now, I'm using the old v2.0.20 version side-loaded (link to download in the app if you have problems) and hoping that things get better in a couple months. I hope they're able to sort it out because I have really enjoyed using these Chargies and I credit them with getting nearly 5 years out of my last smartphone with the battery still in excellent shape (85-90% of original capacity) after that time.

Not related to this video but worth a shot Anyone know of a central heating thermostat replacement for one that is a 2 wire rotary wall one for a touch wifi one. so just removing the wall one and fitting the new one and setting the timer control box next to the boiler to on then using a phone app to control the heat

Question: Do you have any suggestions, for "battery replacement" in off the shelf products which have poor battery performance? I have several Motorola Talkabout T800 two way radios. They ship with a little USB charger. I was hoping I could keep them plugged in and they'd be ready to go when needed. However, I don't get the impression it is following any kind of "smart" charging (20-80%). So after just a few months, the batteries seem to have lost their ability to hold any kind of decent charge. It's extremely frustrating to have a product which is unusable due to poor battery/charging design. I was thinking a single external 16850 plugged via USB port could be an "external" solution. Just wondering how someone with your electronics experience would tackle this issue. As I imagine there are many otherwise great products which suffer from this poor Battery/Charging issue. Thanks!

This is a huge problem. I try to stick with standard batteries for rarely used devices like my emergency radios. Then, I remove tha batteries when not used. Li-Ion batteries are good for devices used every day.

Lithium ion cells hate being held at high voltage or low voltage! This is a particular problem with Lithium NMC cells. Lithium iron phosphate cells are supposed to be more robust but they are less power dense -- much heavier -- not good for handheld/mobile devices!

There's an easier way to do this with a Magisk Module called Advanced Charging Controller. Your Phone or Tablet has to be Rooted fot it to work but it does work very well I use it on my Google Pixel Phone's.

The constant voltage part of the charging, begin way over the 80%. The only great damage occurs when a lithium battery voltage goes under 2.9v, and when the storage level Is way off the nominal voltage. All the rest Is a mith.

my Samsung phone and tablet have a patter protection setting. now the only charge to 80% for the tablet and 84% fot the phone. this way i can leave them on the charger. This way the battery stays at 80%, no nned to charge and discharge, just stay at 80%.

No. But, I charge my smartphone more frequently, so I assume my HAM gear will last just a few years even if I do not treat it optimal. For sure, you should not store it with 100% charged batteries (leave it on for a while when charged)

That is well possible and it would overcharge a few percentages in this case. Apple also writes that the iPhone 15 stops at "about" 80%, not at exactly 80%.

It's having the cell sitting at a 100% change level that stresses the cell chemistry, making it puff up. There is no stopping that if charging it all the way up.

i have a new phone, charge it with 10W Qi wireless charger that has like 60% efficiency. With app I noticed that every 2-4 seconds the power state of phone changes between -200mA to +300mA, the charger is on it is just weak, there is no monit about initiating charging every couple of second, only this drops below zero Will there be a problem with battery because is constantly drops belowe 0mA (because phone uses some power ) or is it normal and ok someone meybe knows?

@@AndreasSpiessSadly on iPhone I had trouble getting it to update the values in HA reliably, even though I set up automations to trigger the sensor updates for every 10% of battery charge, iOS does not seem to like apps sitting in the background and doing what they should. It just says it failed to execute the command, although I specifically disabled the notifications on said commands. :) It worked without any hassle on Android phones for me.

If 80% charge of the battery is idea, why not just display it at 100% when it is at 80%. Battery manufacturers specify how to and at what levels to charge their batteries. I suspect this is for safety, not longevity, after all they want to sell you a new battery once in a while.

When you only charge it to 80% and do not discharge it below 20% you essentially wasting 40% battery capacity, because you are concerned that otherwise you would loose some capacity in the future. I am the only one who sees a flaw in this strategy? This behavior makes a perfect fresh battery to a rubbish battery.

​@@AndreasSpiess I see your point, but this would require you to know beforehand that you need to charge up to 100% I think there are more situations where you wished you would have charged to 100% beforehand and now you're forced to use the last 20%

You claim with the battery is not exactly true: The statements about the 20% and 80% thresholds value are only correct if you discharge/charge your battery below/above them... However modern devices will not use the battery if they're permanently connected to power and thus it is not a problem to keep them permanently connected. In fact your proposal is harmful for those devices since you're forcing them to do discharge/charge cycles to keep them hovering around 80%!

There are other comments, so I do not know if the batteries are really disconnected when fully charged. Still, batteries should not be kept at 100% for storage (which would happen in your scenario).

@@AndreasSpiess The batteries are bypassed, not disconnected; modern laptops do this and most of my laptops are really stationary devices and rarely on the road. The MBP 16" I'm writing this on is almost always hooked up to power (and had 14 charge cycles during the few times I was travelling the past year), it is 14 months old now and battery health is at 96%. I agree that keeping them at 100% is not ideal (though it's not really a storage scenario since there still might be low currents flowing) but I'm somewhat convinced that keeping a battery at 100% is *a lot* better than constantly charging/discharging the battery... Maybe start an experiment with a second tablet constantly hooked up to power and then compare the battery health in two years? 😉

@@danielegger6460 I do not know what is inside the tablets and Smartphones. And maybe laptops have a different setup because suppliers know that many of them are mainly connected to mains. So you do it your way, and I do it my way ;-)

this is a bad solution. being able to change the battery controller's settings to stop charging earlier for longer lifetime would be useful, but not at the cost of uncharging the battery instead. it's solved on the wrong layer.

@@AndreasSpiess if you disconnect the charging cable, the device will continue to consume power, which will lower the charge of the battery. that (and the subsequent re-charging) creates wear. it's not about whether a "full" cycle is happening, the main contribution to battery chemistry degradation is just about how much energy is being dumped in and then taken back out of the battery, which you can prevent by keeping it approximately at the same level at all times. if this was not true, and uncharging your device regularly from 80% to 20% and charging it back up again created *less* wear than keeping it always at 100%, then the charging circuit would be flawed/not setup correctly for this battery's specs. this kind of bug can happen, but mostly it's an urban myth. none of this is optimal, it would of course be best if all devices could disconnect the (80-100% full) battery from the charger and only charge it again after it self-discharges (very slowly) a considerable amount. most higher end devices like laptops support this. but many phones and tablets don't (as you can test by removing the battery while the device is connected to a charger, phones will immediately turn off then, as the battery is wired in series and not disconnectable).

one thing i missed in last message: it would be best if the battery could be disconnected from the charger *and* the device (that needs to use the power). so that the device uses power only directly from the power plug, without a battery in series. the battery *is* disconnected from the charger in phones when it is full, and that is ok, but the problem is that while the battery is being charged the device still draws power from the battery (bec. it's in series). anyways. my original point is that while this is bad, it's less bad than letting the battery drop and then charge again and then drop and charge again in your deeper (20-80%) cycles.

That's wrong. NMC cells age quicker the higher the voltage is. Therefore, having them sit at 100% all the time kills them quicker.

@@mrtechie6810 but in all our devices this is handled by bms. So when your phone is at 0%, it Is not at the lowest voltage of the cell. You Can charge your phone from 0 to 100% it won't change much

I don't believe in the 80% myth. The depth of discharge and how much you cycle it, yes. So in a round about way never fully charging you can save some wear, but the exceed 80%, I don't buy it. I spent hours a few years ago looking for an actual study on it and the only study was from 1998, yes, 1998 on Li Ion technology mentioning the dendrites that can form wen kept above 80%. Zero new studies and just a ton of articles saying charging over 80% is bad, but no proof. If anyone has a link to an actual study, please link it in a comment. I always go to 100%, use my devices for years and aside from a little "wear" in the beginning I have never had an issue. Actually using a 4 year old Huawei P30 Pro and still have 90% battery capacity.

1998 is certainly old but it doesn't invalidate the research. It just needs to be further tested. That said, how much do you use your phone? Since "charging to 100% for 4 years" means something different for everybody.

Even Electric Car Batteries are usually kept within that range and you have to take an extra measure to charge it up to 100% instead of 80%. I guess they don‘t do this for nothing.

This is a huge issue with Lithium NMC cells. Improved chemistries advertise their advantages. Everyone wants increased battery life! Lithium iron phosphate cells are supposed to be more robust and have longer lifetime. However, they are too heavy for handheld devices. Whereas NMC cells are are more power dense but more dangerous and have shorter lifetimes.
