Yes not everyone would be aware of the need to boil water. Especially as he wouldn't always film boiling it first.
@junehitchcock170
@junehitchcock170 3 роки тому
@@michaelgatford6194 ....we boil water (even from the tap) in developing countries. We cool it and put it in the fridge for drinking. Animals wade, drink, defaecate, urinate in river water upstream, so is not a good idea to drink water without boiling first. Even in western countries you should boil the water before drinking if you are neutrapenic/when having chemotherapy(cancer treatment) to be safe.

Commercial meat processors are notorious for letting hair get into the meat when cutting it with a bandsaw. As well, inexperienced people that process their own meat aren’t aware that you have to keep the hair away from the meat at all costs or you’ll have a very strong, pungent, gamey taste in the meat. I have never, and will never take any of my game to a commercial processor. I do it all myself. That ensures that the meat will be hair free and no entrails ever get into the meat I process.

Shawn - you should build a mini diverter canal - run the water through a homemade gravel-charcoal filtering system - store the water in an open air cistern pool - and have 100% pure clean water right by your site.

Sean I just want to tell you how much what you've done has meant to me in the last months of being shut in with serious illness. Your life has been a great inspiration of survival to me. I have always wanted a life and home like you've achieved but likely will not live long enough or healthy enough to do it. My respect for the hard work it takes to accomplish what you did and what you learned. I could not stop watching. You got me through the hardest two years of my life. I feel I finally achieved a log cabin outdoor life through watching your adventure, courage and amazing accomplishments and learning. You and your family are AMAZING! I'm sorry to see you leave the cabin but I guess you had a good reason. I will miss your daily videos. I hope you keep us informed over what you do next. I especially loved it when you brought your wife and family into all you had put together for your own self reliance with them in mind and how you brought in her desk be and storage hope chest and seeing you and the girls enjoying Thanksgiving. They must be so proud of the Dad they have and the husband you are. You're a true inspiration and man who is the most powerful voice of God to me. When our founders came we never realized what it took to begin life on the frontier. I lived with a Canadian family once and fell in love with Canada through Heartland,thru my friends from Saskatchewan, Vancouver and Abbotsford and my daughter's marriage near the border of WA. My best wishes to you and your wife and family. I loved the long house and haven't watched the green house yet. Take care and never forget your adventures gave me hope. I'm losing everything, my health is very fragile and I face homelessness. I could never do ...no wait, know one knows what they can do til they do and YOU DID IT so I can do what I must do now to survive cancer and my own change of life. You taught me in these weeks of watching, there's a wonderful world out there and none knows what they can do until they try. From start to finish you showed me ANYTHING is possible. I share your sadness and mixed feelings as you walk away. I pray your future be just as rewarding. You will be changed forever by this experience. You have changed my mind about aLOT but I still want to stay in a log cabin....at least once before I die. I want to call it mine even for a day and you let me experience it start to finish as I watched your every pursuit of happiness self reliant. You're admired but All of US out here in You Tube land! Darn, I was going to make blankets and a quilt for you both and now....you're not going to be there. I'll have to draw your cabin and land I guess and see from.old videos if I can create it in colored pencil but it will never replicate the colors of your memories of such an amazing 4 years. Please don't be too sad....it's ok if you are. I am sad too and every moment was and will be a new self reliant you in what ever you do next. Visit the place for us again...I wouldn't challenge you to do it again, you worked SO hard but know you did all you did to save your life....redeem it and live with God, nature beautiful Canadian wilderness and for your family and determination to be the best you ever and you are. By the way my nephew's name is Sean James too. I really appreciated you and your wife for this amazing gift to us of your videos and 4 years of My Self Reliance with pup Cali, the bouy and the cabin homestead, sauna, oven kitchen barbecue, outhouse and greenhouse, gardens, work shed, hunting hut and long house. May more men learn from your amazing resilience to be the best men ever. We love you and your amazing family. A fan from Washington state who now finally experienced log cabin outdoor life through my shut in scope of pandemic hell to your miraculous adventure. I am wish you my Irish blessings of Good luck and the breeze to remind you and the color of your memories paint visions of days remembered fondly in all you did these past four years. Don't go away! Go on Sean, go get all you want out of this life. I will too!

It is good that you teach about the water safety and the food safety. I can't tell you how many people I know who got giardia because they cut corners with boiling/filtering/treating the water when camping. If 20 minutes boiling is recommended, they give it 15, and wonder why a month later their liver is acting up.

Being an Aussie city boy I continue to watch little vids like this where I appreciate just how different their life is. They accept the cold and snow and continue on knowing that it will return to what I see as liveable temps. They take forests and plentiful water as the norm. I, on the other hand when getting away prefer the heat and open plains if spending time with friends who raise cattle but I do like to get into our ranges for a week of hiking but I tend to stay beneath the snow lines or head to some place tropical. So I watch and learn this mans ways and accept the fact that it is so good that mankind is so adaptable to all climates on this planet.

I've had great success cooking with all kinds of hard wood. As long as it produces nuts or fruit, good to go. Where we hunt deer there's a creek about same size as yours. After field dressing them we haul them to the creek and let the cold water clean them out . It has worked out well. We usually get at least 3 deer every year between my 2 boys and me. We run out about September. Lots of people have said it taste like lamb. I agree.

Hopefully the relocated bear isn't hanging around being a nuisance. My Newfie grandmother would always marinade wild meat (mallard, moose, bear, elk, seal flippers, etc) in red wine and salt brine for 24h to reduce the wild taste (i think it purges some of the blood and also increases water retention in the meat jucier).

That is funny! The water in my house comes from our pond. We dug a hole beside the pond And put two well tiles in it. Back filled with sand and gravel.. We pump it to a cistern that feeds our kitchen, bathroom, shower, laundry! We don’t boil it and use it for dishes, washing our fruit and vegetables etc. We brush our teeth with it. We just don’t cook or drink it. We drive 30 mins away for potable water. We have never gotten sick from our system and are going on 30 years.

Just watched your goodby video. So sad. I’m glad though that you have more sunshine here. I lived in Appalachian mts one year after I retired early to be near my one of four daughters, and the sun came up over the mountain to the east at 11 am, and went below the mountain to the west at 3 pm. It was exasperating. I had to drive up to a mountain with the top sliced off for a Walmart, to see a sunset. I like this place you are at way better, for situation, if that’s any condolence. I hope you plant some forsythia and lilacs. Grootenberg roses are really hardy, if I remember correctly. Smaller pink clusters, but hardy. Godspeed.

My mom had to boil water for as a child if we went to south Texas to her moms, or we’d have to get a kitchenette motel room when vacationing in Florida, even when I went to Auburn, I had stomach issues with the water. I forget about this when I go thru different towns these days, but it still occasionally happens if we are drinking water at a restaurant, rather than buying bottled water at a store. I really prefer ice, lots of ice because I like to chew on it...in any drink especially tea.

It only takes one experience with "Beaver Fever" to learn how unfiltered/treated water can spoil even a beautiful day. Thanks for your emphasis, Shawn.

Sounds horrid. Do they carry a parasite or is it in their fecal excrement (poop)? TY

Really good comments re: handling game. I grew up loving antelope ... until I tried someone's other than my Dad's! He was very careful with the carcase and even carried jugs of water in order to wash out the carcase if needed.

Have you ever considered building an above-ground weir and filling it with crushed limestone and a copper funnel to filter your water? Just an idea. Safe and happy travels!

2:20 Is this a carbon filter?

@@rconger384 crushed limestone and copper imo, would be a natural filter. In today's world, I'd do a charcoal filter.

I always trusted the tablets to clean up water when camping. Ok, let's just name the bear now how about 'Yogi' that's original isn't it? lol

I’m not a hunter. I like to fish. But, I have had delicious venison in the past from friends that have hunt and they all said the same thing you did. The handling of the meat after the kill. I found that most interesting. It made sense. I’m not a fan of wild turkey, but small game fowl I do like. For me it is fishing. Walleye, Pike, Panfish, Catfish, and a favorite Bullhead.

Your lean-to turned out to be fairly handsome. I'd for sure be breaking out a witching wand and get a sand point driven. A good "Witcher" can detect the main underground water course depths.
I changed my mind
