people always compare messi with cristiano ronaldo but in reality you can only compare them on their ability to score many goals. for me messi is the best but cristiano is also great but not when it comes to an all around player. i always say that cristiano is a complete goal scorer because he can score every type of goal but that messi is the complete player because he can do everything not just score.

Maradona I think was better, because he could tackle, was tougher, better passer, better free kick taker, better aerial game and aerial control. Messi is faster, better dribbler and better finisher, and his speed of thought is exceptional and his close control on the ground is the best ever. But I think Maradona was close to Messi in everything that Messi is good at, but there are things I feel that Maradona did that Messi cannot. Also leadership, he also dragged an average Argentina side to a world cup pretty much by himself, and Napoli to league titles in an 80's Italian League that was the best in the world at the time. Serie A , the Italian League, really was the closest thing to modern football in the 80's, With teams like AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Lazio, all stronger teams than Napoli pre Maradona. Italy was already doing many Modern Football practices in training/diet etc used today (not as indepth, but the Italian league was early with that) The AC Milan of this era had Nesta, Baresi, Van Basten, Guillit and was one of the greatest club sides of all time. Maradona did a Leicester but in Napoli's case it was not a huge slice of luck and the perfect storm and an underrated team , Maradona was that good, he won titles in average teams against some of the best sides to ever do it, he WAS the miracle in Napoli's case. He was a better captain than Messi, and played in a much more physical time , and regularly had opposition defenders actually trying to injure him, not just trip him. Messi is the best dribbler and Wing forward I have ever seen, but Maradona could do all that almost as well but a load of other stuff too, and was the best all round footballer I have seen if you take everything into account (Objective/Subjective/Tangible/Intangible) Messi always had great players around him, Maradona did not, you cant hold that against Messi, but it does mean that Maradona's achievements mean more because they were more about his ability and how he got everyone else playing, Messi is an exceptional talent surrounded by exceptional talent

I know I'm late to this but Neymar (from Brazil) could have been the closest thing to him. He has the skills, speed and youth on his side. Unfortunately, he dives too much and complains. I'm a big fan of his by the way. Also, anyone who's played soccer long enough knows none of Messi's stuff is easy. Think of him as prime Allen Iverson if you're a basketball fan.
