I think the way to get that tax done is a 30% flat tax (60% seems excessive.) applied the moment the profit numbers drop. Eg. Company announced a 100 million profit for the quarter 30% tax applied means stockholders get 70 million profit. Then you bring the Company tax rate to zero. Index a living wage to the workers, include a retirement plan. What's that how do you pay for it. Simply the ecconomy pays for it. Workers with money spending. Spending causes profits. Profits increase revenues. Revenues keep works happy, through social programs like education and free health care. Happy educated workers cause productivity. Terrible idea right.

Yes that's s how Amazon made. Billions by paying it drivers crappy pay ,giving over 200 packages to deliver a day no way and getting $ 140 , means you deliver every package to get $0.7 or less ,and you have to work very very fast ,drive fast ....stress , for low pay ,no thanks , I prefer to uber or to deliver food for pizza shop and make something between 40-150$ (tips) plus hourly pay and discount or free meal. To deliver those 200 packages for amazon they must pay at least $ 250 -300$ a day . Means at least $25an hour . That's how they becomes billionaires by paying crappy pay to ppl . How about we fix the EMPLOYMENT issue before fixing unemployment?? It’s hard enough to find a job, but once you do, they are FREE to screw you over as an employee. No company is required to pay sick leave, maternity leave, and other forms of compensation. More and more companies are screwing over their employees. And people are too afraid to leave their job to change that. It’s disgusting. There are much bigger fish to fry than figuring out unemployment benefits wtf

How do you tax unrealized gains? All the gains in wealth are from stock increasing in value and in my opinion stocks are overvalued. Maybe a higher capital gains tax for higher income earners. I am all for taxing billionaires more, but if Elon Musk for example is taxed on his stock gains he would have to sell significant stock in his own company to pay the tax since he doesn't have a lot of accessible cash. You can't make someone sell their company, because they are too successful. Bernie's tax will never pass.

If billionaires have to pay 60 percent taxes on their capital gains, they will sell their stocks driving the price down. Then the stock price hits everyone else's stop loss thresholds and they sell as well driving the price even lower. Lower stock prices greatly impair businesses ability to sell their stock to raise capital when they need it, so they look for other ways to cut costs. This usually involves laying off employees. Then with less working people in the country, there are less people who can afford to buy stuff. GDP goes down and stocks go down further. Bernie's 60 percent capital gains tax if implemented will lead to a crash of the same magnitude that happened in February and March, but with no recovery.

Not sure a wealth tax is even constitutional. It took a constitutional amendment to enact an income tax. Even though this would directly affect only a few people the effect on the economy would be huge. None of these billionaires have this much cash lying around, so in order to pay the wealth tax, they would have to sell massive amounts of their stock which would cause the value to plummet taking the whole market with it. With dropping protfolios, the amount the government would be able to confiscate would go way down. 401Ks and IRAs would lose $100s of billions in value and middle class Americans would see their savings vanish. All so Sanders and other leftists can show their utter disdain for capitalism. Remember capitalism is shared opportunity, socialism is shared misery.

In about 20 years time the billionaires will have ALL the MONEY, and poor people will work for food and clothes got from a vending machine.

If they truly had all the money, we as a society would have to drop USD as a commonly used currency and use something else (and making sure you cant trade it for USD) thus making USD worthless.

I'll tell you how it would work. It would start out as a "billionaire's tax". It's sold that way to trade on the envy and resentment voters feel towards people who have more money than themselves; they're angry that they're not Geoff Bezos and didn't invent Amazon. "You have money - I don't - so I'm going to take it from you". But the amount of money raised is peanuts compared to something like income tax revenues. What Sanders really cares about here is setting a precedent. That tax rate wouldn't stay low for very long, and it wouldn't be something only billionaires paid for long either. You can expect it to be gradually extended. The rate would get increased year on year and the threshold would go down every year. Pretyt soon it would be a "millionaire's tax". Still not too bad, most people would just shrug and say "it's Okay, I'm not a millionaire". But I'd give it around ten years before it's turned into a generalised "Wealth tax" that _everyone_ pays as all assets get taxed. Including your home - and quite a few people would get a really nasty surprise when they found out they are paper millionaires thanks to the value of their home. Just like most of Bezos' money is actually tied up in the nominal value of Amazon. He hasn;t got tens of billions of dolalrs in the bank. Always remember that in Great Britain, *income tax* was sold as a temorary tax needed to fight the war with Napoleon. It is still with us...and it wasn't that long ago that it reached 98%.

Bezos only pays himself a salary of $81, 840 a year, so are you saying he should only be taxed on the income he makes as a salary? I don't feel resentment towards billionaire entrepreneurs, but as Warren Buffett observed, there's something wrong when his secretary pays a higher tax rate than what he pays. Since these billionaires minimize their income, so they report very little income compared to their wealth, and dividends and capital gains are taxed at a lower rate than income, this is why they are talking about a wealth tax.

@@josephc28 Capital gains and dividend income are taxed differently for a good reason. Shares for example - not only might you get no dividend, you might actually lose your capital investment as well. Dividends and rises in share value are a reward for risking your investment, and the taxes associated are designed to encourage people to invest in companies, which you need, how else do companies generate investment capital, aside from borrowing? Lower tax rates reflect the risk taken and the fact that the government wants people to invest in companies. And the whole thing about wealth taxes is a con. They are described as "wealth taxes" to make them mor epopular - but what they are in actuality is *asset taxes* . Now peopel like Sanders never want to talk about *asset* taxes. Why? because people realise how unfair they are and become frightened that one day, not just billionaires would pay them, but everyone would. An *asset tax* - where the government demands you pay let's say 2% every year to the IRS of the value of that nice painting you inheritted from Aunt Daisy - is nowhere near as acceptable as a "billionaire tax". And of course, as I said, someone like Geoff Bezos...most of his wealth is nominal. It's tied up in the nominal value of things like Amazon. He's very wealthy, but he hasn;t got tens of billions stashed in a checking account. Would you tax him on nominal assets? And do you force him to sell assets to pay the tax on those assets? If you do, how would you feel if there was a wealth tax on your home which you could not pay without turning it into cash by selling it? Here in the UK a poll was done about wealth taxes. Lots of people thought it was a good idea. But *only whe they carefully excluded themselves from it* . The threshold was carefully set at £750,000 - far more than most people have - and it also excluded main home and pension funds. That's not a wealth tax. That's a "someone else" tax. The joke is that the vast majority of wealth in the Uk is held in main home property and pension funds. Once you exclude those, and most of the leftover wealth by setting the threshold at £750,000....there's very little left to tax! So basically people like th eide aof a wealth tax...but only whe they themselves do not have to pay it.
