It's crazy how much spin JSH generates and how much speed he takes off those Ma Long smashes. Ma Long rips a shot as hard as humanly possible, and it comes back looking like it's in slow motion. Nutty.
@tomsd8656
@tomsd8656 2 роки тому
I played ping pong to a decent level, and it's not that hard to chip back the opponent attack. You just stood far from the table, the his shot would slow down by the time it gets to you. But the challenge is getting it back into the table time after time, because when you're that far, the table appears a lot smaller to you.
@spin.chicken
@spin.chicken 2 роки тому
I don't want to be that guy but if you understand physics, have an extensive background in ping pong, or a relatively decent level of critical thinking you'll see how it's actually not as difficult and impressive as you may think. What's impressive is how he can be so consistently accurate (from both sides). I always find back spin hits to be much easier to control in basically any sport.

@@spin.chicken Which shows how skilled JSH was, returning low, with varied placement, and sometimes, even with so little time to react to Ma Long's vicious loop drives, he'd vary spin the way it fools the opponent and gets points for himself.

One of the greatest, if not the greatest, match in table tennis. The level of skill to play those rallies and at those speeds and distances/angles was simply breath-taking let alone the incredible huge spin generated throughout. All sports have their opposites eg in boxing it's the fighter v the boxer, in snooker the potter v the safety player, etc and this is table tennis's battle of the styles. Such a pity someone had to lose but that's competition. Ironic that the Korean guy was more effective when he started to attack (best form of defence as the saying goes). Reminds me when the roles reversed and Sugar Ray turned into the fighter and hunted down Tommy Hearns to win by TKO back in '81.

Among the TT players, who revel at hitting top spin forehand and back hand at breath taking speeds, here is a guy who revels in lifting everything back to the table with unmistakable resilience and that deadly chop. This match reminds me of a very famous story. In ancient China, there was a man who sold both spears and shields. He boosted his spears were so good that they could break any shields. However, at the same time, he also bragged his shields were so strong that no spears could break them. One day, a by-stander challenged him to use his spears to attack his shields. At the end, that man was speechless. Ma is the attacker that can destroy any defender and Joo is the defender that no attacker can defeat. Everyone here is the by-stander who wants to know what will happen.

Niesamowicie piekna gra z obu stron. Mało jest tak szybkich i sprawnych defensorów. Uwielbiam ogladac takie potyczki o różnych stylach gry, atak i obrona przeciwko sobie. Zenon z Warszawy.

Love this post! One of my favorite matches. Joo Sae Hyuk makes it look easy. It’s hard to chop low to the net and deep vs heavy top spin. Anyone think Joo change out his pips for a faster rubber would have improved his style?
@ktosomcosom19
@ktosomcosom19 2 роки тому
In my humble opinion, it wouldn´t work for him if he ever changed his style to attacking, even very early in his career. In many matches, including this, I´ve seen him having clear opportunities to attack and probably finish the point on the backhand side, but he would push/chop instead and it seems like he just prefers to keep the ball in play instead to try and frustrate/confuse his opponent and only go for attacks from the forehand side - even though he was very adept of attacking both with pips and his forehand rubber on the backhand side. Perhaps he just didnt feel that his backhand attacks are sufficiently reliable, I don´t know.

If I hadnt learned about Xu Xin and Wang Haos Penhold attacking style, I would definitely play as a defender attacmpting to emulate Joo SaeHyuk. Also the change of the bll makes it much harder for defenders, so it isnt really viabe anymore. Anyways, I am glad I play as an attacking looper now, but I still enjoy the defensive game with TPB lobbing every once in a while to emulate my former dream of being a defender!

Ma Long's forehand is so unfair! It's crazy! He generates so much spin that it's practically dipping for his opponent's side of the table before he even hits it. It feels like he could hit it straight up at escape velocity and it would STILL find his opponent's table.
