Since pfsense doesn't use much resources, is there a good reason to go for high-end hardware? Just curious

pfSense can be somewhat heavy on resources if you happen to use Suricata, Snort, several VPN connections with heavy encryptions and other stuff like large NAT tables (require more RAM) etc. For home use, I would start with entry-level hardware and upgrade as I go.

Thank you, I am planning to go with DIY route with SOC CPU, specifically Asrock N100. It is fairly new and powerful, I guess it would suffice even if its not a Xeon.@@RandomTechChannel

I have a Netgate SG-3100 (End of Life) at home and was looking to get the fujitsu s920 and upgrade it with a mellanox 10g nic. Do u think this will have a better performance? Since i can get around 300€ for the netgate device if i sell it and the complete cost of the fujitsu project would be around 60€

Unfortunately I never had a chance to test SG-3100 so it is hard to say. I'm sure both can do their jobs as long as the hardware performance is taken into consideration. I'm working on more videos videos regarding the pfSense hardware never covered on this channel before. Stay tuned! :)

What do you think how much networkspeed are the categorie 6 pc's capable of? Hardware (cpu) wise?

I would say that 1Gbps should be doable, depending on how much load (VPNs, IPS/IDS..) you have on your hardware. An old PC can have extremely powerful CPU for pfSense regardless of it being insufficient in terms of power consumption.

diy beats all these 'tiers' - you save money and can expand more than these commercial options, opnsense has better drivers and better licensing - they want you to sell

You can always use USB-LAN adapter instead of relying on PCI-E ;)

Unfortunately many of them rely on RealTek chipsets, which is not recommended for pfSense. They might do the job, but I would personally avoid any kind of USB-ethernet adapters.

@@RandomTechChannel let me explain my point - I usually use proxmox and it has quite good support for many nics. So when nic is virtualized (not passthrough) it works flawlessy actually
