I did the same some time ago but there's a big issue for a small minority of users, myself included, that made me switch back to Steam; There's no Linux client for Galaxy, while Steam + Proton makes non-native games, ie. Windows games, trivial to run. I'd love to use GoG again because I prefer the DRM-free approach. Unfortunately the service is just simply that much worse for someone with a niche setup like myself.

If it's on GOG I'll always go for GOG. The fact that I could download entire game, back it up to my external HDD so when I need to re install it I don't have to download it again and can set it up without having to connect is amazing. It make it feel like I actually own the game.And if it's only on Epic, then it might as well not exist for me.

@@Omizuke The big problem with GOG is that many of the old classic games they provide, is illegal as they used to go as abandonware just few years ago. Abandonware means there is no longer a company that owns the legal rights to the software so it’s free to copy and use, but somehow almost all of those games have ended up at GoG and is now being charged for downloadning them.
@Omizuke
@Omizuke 4 місяці тому
@mrdali67 I've got the old games there for a dollar. At that point I basically paid for them having the game preserved on their servers. Which is good, since their original company aren't bothering with preserving and redistribute. Less of a hassle and potentially safer than looking for them on ROM sites. And still what I look for on GOG is new games without DRM, not requiring having to run additional software, or running in the background, not having to re download. As someone that not always have internet and when do my home net right now is 6Mbps. Downloading big games take forever. And my phone has 5G that's 100 time faster. But if I do tethering I'd blow the 50GB and get throttle to oblivion. At least every game I've download in GOG, the not store version, is compressed and in multi parts. So no only reduce the size, but I could download it directly on the phone. And just move it. The only thing offering me a better option would be repack torrents. And for old games emulators. Games like Prince of Persia from GOG are a pain to set a controller. There Steam wins. (Or at least the old games I've gotten on steam work with minimal to no work on my part) but best experience would still have been to just run an emu. But I'm a sucker for

GOG allows you to have as many copies of the game as you want installed simultaneously, so if it's a concern for you and the game you want is available there that's the solution. Of course, I'd imagine the whole "No DRM, at all" thing is why a bunch of games simply aren't available on GOG.

Yeah I found it odd, that they described the features of GOG, but kept mentioning all the competitors that do not have those features. The Steam limit of 1 session per user seems like a non-issue considering they have Family Sharing. They want each person to have their own profile. As long as they're registered as family, they can play any of the games you're not playing. The problem you might bring up there is kind of a "get them into the ecosystem early" sort of thing, if it's a kid. Or if they wanted your profile to hoover up your data/violate your privacy. But not that they're not letting people in the same household share games.
@marlontel4934

With family share if someone usess their account, no other games can be shared. For example someone plays Counterstrike their Kid cant play Witcher at the same time.
@jong1770
@jong1770 4 місяці тому
Steam's Family Sharing option is great. You can share your game library with another steam user and they can play all your games under their own profile. This means they get their own saves, achievements, etc. The only limitation is if you both try to play the same game at the same time, the owner of the game gets priority and the other user(s) can't play. It's a great way to solve this exact problem.
@folcotook3049
@folcotook3049 4 місяці тому
@@marlontel4934 Trying to understand that better. I know I can be playing a game in my library while my son is playing a different game also from my Steam library. Do you mean that a 3rd person couldn't also be playing a 3rd game from my library in my family? That's a scenario that just hasn't come up for me yet, so I don't have real world experience beyond sharing with my son.

@@jPup_ I am as well. I went from 5600x to 5800x3d and it was a considerable gain for the titles that I play. The GPU settings really didnt matter as I was very CPU limited, but the CPU upgrade was 40fps increase on the minimums from 90-100 to 140 (where I lock my frames). It allows for a much more consistent play session. The 5800x3d has a similar level of performance to 7600x, and if the user lives near a Micro Center, then often a complete package deal can have substantial cost savings (they had 7800x3d/mobo/ram combo for $499 last week). @GhostAcez
@GhostAcez 3 місяці тому
@PorkChopXpress1701 It depends on the games, but in general, 1440p is going to have more to do with your GPU. I would suspect you're getting dips below 60 because that GPU only has 8gb of Vram and newer AAA games use more than that at high settings 1440p. Honestly for long term 1440p gaming you're gonna want at least 16gb of Vram on a GPU that's already pretty good at 1440p. So like a RX 7800xt, 7900xt, or on Nvidia side of things the 4080/upcoming 4070 ti Super. One of those cards would last someone playing new AAA games 3-5 years probably aiming for 1440p 60fps gaming. The 4080 might last a bit longer than that but it really depends on what you play.

I was happy with my upgrade and optimistic I could keep the DDR5 ram and possibly the motherboard/beefier cooler I got to have an easy future pathway to upgrade to a future Ryzen 9000 series CPU. It's best to think of it in the sense of if you'd prefer to save money for this upgrade with an 5800x3d or your next upgrade.

@@vh9network whoops forgot to include a small part. The 5800x3d is a viable upgrade; however, you will still have to upgrade to ddr5 in the future. Currently DDR5 ram is actually fairly priced assuming you are not trying to get high capacity/speed ram past 64gb kits. The 5800x3d is most certainly a great upgrade, it's just more likely the 7800x3d will age better with DDR5 ram and PCIe 5 support. Should me noted workstation performance while still bad on the 7800x3d, is still a huge jump from the 5000 series.

I also buy parts 1 generation/1 year after they come out so I'm not paying opening day MSRP either.

17:06 Steam used to work the exact same way. If you logged in on your laptop, your desktop would be automatically logged off, and vice versa. Not sure how long ago they changed that, but it's worth remembering. Regarding the whole issue, it seems clear to me that the only valid limitation Steam can place is per-game. Once you're in a position to have multiple people logged in at once and detect when a game is being run, there's no excuse not to only limit it to one person per game. That's ignoring self-inflicted legalese problems, of course. I suspect that's the main culprit here, with Steam having a history of insisting that there's only one account owner, and accounts cannot be transferred. That's already afoul of the law in most jurisdictions (e.g. someone dies, meaning their library can be legally inherited - but Steam has no provision to do that). So they need to clean up their legal position and do the right thing here.

The 7800x3d was on sale for 340 and i wanted to build a mATX system anyway cuz my Silent Base 802 is way too big for my current needs. If i am gonna build a new mATX Sytem i thought why go with AM4 again, since the MB prices are pretty much the same with AM5. DDR5 Ram cots a bit more, but it will last me longer i assume. I am not the biggest gamer, but if i do play i want performence, and the x3d cpu´s not having bad 1% lows is a good thing for fluid gaming. I play CPU demanding games like Warzone. Your "huge" jump in performance was mostly due to the 4080, not the 8700k. The mobo I'm is the x670e Ace (yes overkill I know) however I know it has one of the best ram stability on the AM5 platform from what people have told me and my question is will I need to trim the megatranfers down to 6000 as I know there has been issues with the 48gb kits? I wanted to get as much ram as I could afford in 2 sticks rather than 4 knowing that the speed would have to drastically dropped?

On note of the single active user policy with steam, having something like what tim mentioned of getting a significant discount for buying a second copy would also make people less likely to circumvent the policy (there is almost always a way to do it, and if it's a singleplayer game then disconnecting from the internet is usually fine) so it would probably work in developers' (and valve's) favour

Depends on what you have to go with it. I started this build with a R5-2600/ GTX1660 / 16 GB/ B450 mb combo, then upgraded to a 1660 Super a few years later. Then when the price came down, I moved to a 5600x and added 16 GB. That was fine for about a year but the Ethernet jack died on the mb so I had to get a 2.5 Gb card to replace that. Then I got this LG 1440 144hz monitor on sale... so you can see how things can snowball. :)

the whole steam 1 game launched per 1 account is even more relevant since steam deck release - sometimes you would like to play with your buddy (you on main pc, and friend on steam deck) and you just cant do that unless you relog to other account and buy the game again (i think this also limits free2play games). There really should be some way around, idk maybe 50? % discount or something so u get multiple launches licence.

I am just upgrading from my laptop which i got 8 years ago roughly to a new pc as most game were fine until 2023. If you want top graphics and performance all the time because that is your hobby then you will probably find you use your pc a whole lot and play games that really require top specs. I myself have played many top of the line games such as cyberpunk 2077 on that 980m and whilst it could of looked better it did run, was able to finish the game but didnt try the expansion as my laptop was just not running at good enough performance with cyberpunk 2077 and that is where i knew i NEEDED a new pc. Being a laptop it clearly wasnt going to be just a straight swap onto a new graphics card so have went for a completely new build, pretty much top of the line for gaming. The issues i see is that since developers make games for ps and xbox and pc is more of an after thought in todays age most high end graphics cards today will run for quite a while at top specs. Thats my opinion atleast

For the 'wait GPU' question, my latest experience was buying a 6800xt last year this time for about $550 USD used (new was sold out). If I waited till this year's black friday price of ~$480, then I couldn't have enjoyed games like D4, AC6, Lies of P, and BG3 as much with my Vega 56, so that $70 difference was well worth it. Heck, I was looking to buy it during launch with MSRP of $650, and would have been worth it 100% but mining boom happened so was sold out everywhere (or heavily scalped). As for whether that vega 56 was worth the ~$100 USD that I saved between it and the 5700xt that I actually wanted, it was a much harder question to answer. On one hand, I built my Ryzen 2 rig from the ground up at that time, so it was just go for the vega 56 immediately or tack on another $50 to get an interim cheap used GPU while I wait for the 5700xt 3 months down the line. I decided not to spend the extra money and instead save it for Navi 21, which would have been a great idea but mining boom happened. As such, I was stuck with a vega 56 for three years, and really regretted not just forking over the extra cash. So yes, for GPU, if the competitors for the GPU you are eyeing has been released, just buy it then and there. You never know when a tech boom will happen, which will make GPUs skyrocket in price. CPUs on the other hand, isn't nearly been affected by any trends... I really should have just delayed building my Ryzen 2 rig a few months later to buy it together with a 5700xt (by then the CPU had a slight sale already), but as they say hindsight is 20/20.

There were 14 cards that were compared by a cost per frame and it had all 6 Radeon cards rated the cheapest per frame compared to all 8 Nvidia cards rated in the most expensive range and then came Tim's take on all of this.....the Radeon cards have to be cheaper as the current pricing didn't make sense. Did I miss something.

I've pretty much done all the research I possibly can, as someone that's been building computers for nearly 20 years, mostly looking for opinions here from the tech lads down under. Currently on a 3900XT, 64GB of RAM, and an EVGA FTW3 Hybrid 2080 Super but because of refurbished parts and Frankenstein replacements while troubleshooting, it's on its way out unfortunately. I've got build lists for a 4070, 4080, and 4090 rig, all still on AM4 with a 5900X or 5950X, as well as nearly identical lists for AM5 with the 7900X or 7950X/X3D. I'm a power user and do use the rig for streaming occasionally, will do more when situation allows, as well as some photo and video editing. It seems like AM5, being in its first gen, still has too many quirks to make the jump (slow boots, only able to run 2-stick RAM kits limiting capacity, odd stability issues) but it does have a decently significant performance uplift. I'm looking to build sometime this next summer, so late 2024. First question is, what of those GPUs would be the best bang for my buck? Or does it make more sense to wait for 50 series and hope Nvidia gets their heads out of their inflationary asses? I'm currently strongly leaning towards the 4090 for just pure power and as much "future proofing" as one can reasonably get out of any build, but I've also considered tuning it back to a 4070 or 4080, mainly because 4090's can swing up to 3 grand in Canada, but the 4080 isn't that far behind in price and the 4070 goes for a good 1000-1200. The 4070 Ti seems like a wash for value so I didn't bother to include it. I game at 1440p 144hz, usually high settings if I can. Second question is, what's been your personal experience with the AM5 platform? Is it stable enough in its current iteration? I get there's no guarantee of stability, but relatively speaking in comparison to the fully fleshed out AM4. I believe we're on track to get the next gen AM5 chips in Q2 2024 as well, so would it be worth waiting to see how that improves things before pulling the trigger? I'd love to get at least 3 M.2 slots, which was a rarity on AM4 except on the high end motherboards which are nearly impossible to find these days (always wanted a Crosshair Extreme). As always, enjoyed the content and seeing that Tim commits heretical sins with his PC.

That last question was kind of funny. I'm going from a 5800X3D to a 7800X3D. But this is due to me giving my nephew this PC, but with an older GPU (RTX 2060) until I replace my current RTX 3070Ti next year. I've often bought the last CPU and motherboard for a generation/socket and then unable to upgrade, so I figured I'd get a good X670 motherboard now and hopefully do a CPU upgrade in the future.

Regarding the last question (33:20), I'd say that VRChat/creating for VRChat is one of the few times it would make sense to upgrade from the R5 5600X to the R7 7800X3D (even 5800X3D for cheaper). Especially if people are spending enough time in the social game and/or are producing goods/models/etc for the game (basically game dev), since benchmarks from the community & VRChat staff have shown it does drastically drop perf/watt + frame consistency + reduced time for loading/model building/etc. Plus, I'm in that boat of "should I upgrade" and I think I'll wait for a bit longer. Gonna wait for a few more friends to do the upgrade before I jump in myself, since I think I missed the EOY boat for when the cost is at its lowest as I only did just upgrade about two years ago >.>;;;;

When I upgrade my GPU, i'm not as concerned about the competition for that particular GPU as I am how much of an increase over what I already have it is, and how the $$ per performance compares to what I paid for my old one (including inflation). I avoid worrying about what everyone else has and I'm just worried about what sort of increase I get in the games that I play. I get a lot of enjoyment out of upgrading when I re-play an older game but I can just completely max out the settings and get a new experience.

I took the jump a few days ago from the 5600x to the 7800X3D. I got the 7800X3D, with MSI B650-P Pro ATX, and Gskill Flare X5 32gb, 6000 CL36 for $499 at Microcenter in a bundle. Paired with a 6950xt it is everything I could ever want. Though, I could have gone with the 5800X3D for cheaper, I went with the 7800X3D for a few reasons. Number one, I'm handing down my 5600X rig to my soon to be 7yr old and I would have had to buy another Mobo/Ram anyways. Second, by going AM5 it gives me some upgrade wiggle room if needed in the future. Lastly, I could afford it and the deal from Microcenter was insane, 7800X3D - $270, MSI mobo - $146, Gskill for $83. Pretty crazy deal I think. Hopefully the MSI board holds out, as I've always been an Asus fan, but I took the plunge and thought I'd try out the MSI board. So far, in Escape from Tarkov, the 7800X3D is noticably smoother and I can't be happier with my rig!

And all the fans from be quite high pressure fans. My CPU stays around 52°C in full load (24h test). And now the system is tested with a special suite, with bursts and burn in tech. Runs smooth and quiet to be honest. And fans aren't ramping up, so there is a lot of headroom to overclock.
