Might be a good idea to show people how to re pin them :) with a small flat screwdriver.

or check the polarity with a meter, just because black is on the left doesn't mean it's actually negative

It's good practice to always test all the things with a multimeter. Check which pin on the battery connector is ground, check which wire on the battery is higher voltage, etc. Of course, blowing up a tantalum cap on an Arduino Pro Mini because one was boneheaded enough to connect the 12 volt source backwards is a good learning experience in not doing that again and in repairing the damage (only the cap failed, so that was good, and the board and replacement caps are quite inexpensive).

They're not bad lipos, they're just wired that way. ;-) Seriously though, if you have one like this you can carefully poke the crimped terminals out of the plastic housing and re-insert them the other way 'round.

I burnt my mp3 player recently when I try to replace with the new one I bought online. Again it's because of reverse polarity.

Sounds like an opportunity for reverse polarity protection video.

So... wire color determines polarity? Then the simple fix is to swap the color of the leads with red and black electrical tape. Or heat shrink tubing. You can't trust a voltmeter or physical inspection of the battery terminals, but you can trust wire color!

I assume you're joking... Definitely can't trust wire color, but it can be a good clue. If you're getting a battery powered thing from Adafruit but a battery from elsewhere, some checking (preferably with a volt meter) is required, which I think was more the point of this video. Very recently let the magic smoke out of a cheap gadget I was hacking, by hooking up my bench supply according to wire color instead of the silkscreen that I noticed after it went pop...

To bad there is no room for a polarity protection diode for the lipo connector (some boards do,but many don't)
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 2 роки тому
If you connect the battery through a diode, how do you charge it then? Another possibility is to connect the diode across the connector together with a micro polyfuse to make a crowbar circuit, but that has drawbacks as well.

nothing bad about the battery the connector is wired differenty (the more common wiring used in the RC world) and you can lift the plastic tabs to swap them if you need to. first adafruit boards I got died to this as everything else I have (so the batteries I already had) are wired the other way. I ended up making crossover connectors so I didn't have to swap battery termainals every time I wanted to use a battery with one of your boards.

I'd even say it's on Adafruit that they have invented their own pinout and haven't looked out for what adjacent industries use.

I've had a connector with the wires swapped. It's an easy fix. Just pull the pins out and swap the wires.

simply put proper battery protection on the board ?
@rpavlik1

A polarity protection diode would really eat into your voltage on a lipo with a 3v processor, and a mosfet based "ideal diode" would be slick but expensive, another part on the bom, and another component to find space for. I'd love it (maybe there's a battery control ic with one built in?) but I understand why there isn't one. If you get all your parts from them (or even spark fun I think uses the same connector pin out, maybe a few other big names) there's no problem, which is probably all beginners should stick to anyway. Going "off book" has its risks.
