Still wondering - since august 24, 1991, 33 years ago, more than 3 decades ago, Ukraine became a state independent. SO: why haven't they: invested and built up their own military and militia, applied for NATO, or became a TRUE democratic country? Lets call it a flat 30 years ago. Most US people couldn't spell Kiev or find Ukraine on a map 2 years ago. Democracy isn't free right?

Because they'd only recently started cleaning up government corruption. Sadly, the Russian invasion interrupted that process. I suspect the decreasing corruption may have been one of the factors that led to it; the Russians may have been butthurt that their puppet candidates were starting to lose elections. Obviously, that's not the only reason, but it may be one of them.
