My now passed husband loved Big Mama Thornton. In the 60's in Hayward/Fremont skidrow is where mama and all the great blues players, singers hung out. My ol man was white as a sheet but loved all the talent immensely in spite of being scolded by Big mama for calling her by her name, she was testing him and after an exchange of words he was in' he said greatest years of his life...Fly high with all that beautiful blues my beloved. RIP 880 ❤

I've been watching this recording since 2017, I have the sweetest memories attached to it. Me and my friends sitting on that old balcony in Havana drinking cheap cuban rum, all of us so focus on every expression of Big Mama's face. We nicknamed her as Candida, because it reminded us one of this strong cuban women who could sell fruits and read your hand. We were all cubans, and we were so charmed about the way she put her soul in every note, without a doubt this is a masterpiece that still unites us all, still give us the goosebumps and make us wanna live in those days. I'm currently living in Saint Petersburg and still my friends talk about those times in fith floor balcony around 3 am when we all kept silence to listen to Big Mama {Candida} We all have been glued by the Blues. We all fell in love about this mystic and rather simple way of saying profound emotions. Long life to the Blues. Long life to Big Mama.

First I came across Big Mama Thorton in late sixties or early seventies when my friend in Warsaw have Big Mama Thorton 2 LPs on Arhoolie Records-Big Mama Thorton in Europe" & "Big Mama Thorton with The Muddy Waters Band" when I noted her greatnest."In Europe" was recorded on October 20,1965 in London with Buddy Guy,Eddie Boyd,Jimmy Lee Robinson,Shakey Horton,Fred Below & three tracks with Fred Mcdowell on guitar.Specially tracks with Fred Mcdowell are very expressive & then I'd fall in love with her voice and great blues msic.LP with M.W.Blues Band was recorded on April 25th,1966 in San Francisco.Until now I've collected her 12 CDs & 8 Lps.All of them are great. All the best to all blues lovers & good blues music collectors.By the way in my blues music collection i can count about 7000 CDs & 12 hundred Lps.I started my collection in 1966 & is growing.

Big Mamma Thornton played an important part in the development of what became known as Rock and Roll. You might be interested to know that the Elvis hit song Hound Dog was also one of her songs.

This just cleared up a lifetime of confusion for me. My mother was from Mississippi, she always called me “Big Mama “, since I was a teenager. I grew up in Chicago with my dad. I never knew it was such a compliment. I thought she was calling me fat. My mother passed, and never explained to me why she called me that. I was not worthy, to be sure. I am white, and not very talented. Only thing is my soul, now that’s a different matter entirely. RIP Big Mama’s everywhere!
