I read or watched something a few years ago that said all major televised live performances like the Macy’s Thanksgiving performances and Super Bowl Halftime performances have the vocals pre-recorded and lip-synced or doubled live. If I remember correctly it’s to ensure the televised version has a clear vocal sound and you don’t just hear wind and/or the crowd noises. It also is an insurance thing to ensure the live telecast can be censored if necessary. If you ever notice, no Macy’s performance is ever out of tune. Super Bowl always has a backing track and it can be turned up/down to allow artists to still do live adlibs, but it’s still mostly prerecorded. I don’t mean tv shows. Also this was years ago and I don’t know if anything’s changed as technology has improved.

The story of Milli Vanilli is really tragic. Their five minutes of fame hurt them really, one of the two died due to drugabuse. Right now there´s a German film about them in the cinemas (Probably only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, because I´m not sure if it is translated). The producer of Milli Vanilli Frank Farian also just died recently (in 2024) Otherwise I think most big artist nowadays use at least a back-up vocal, but the fails are always funny. Greetings from Germany
@alexkunce20023 місяці тому
Indeed...Frank Farian had a bit of a sympathetic past too. He was trying to make a name for himself alone, and when producers rejected him he made Boney M. as a pseudonym. Most of the performances were dubbed with his voice mixed with the ladies, and Bobby Farrell dancing and lipsyncing. But Boddy sang sometimes too, on purpose, not because of tech issues. Anyway, it seems like he got down a bad path of seeing that the only way to succeed is to have a pretty face on music. And while I'm against the whole Milli Vanilli thing and I'm glad it got exposed, I feel bad for him. I could imagine, after seeing your career fail and your pseudonym succeed, to start leaning more and more on lipsynching and lies.
@itsJeaaan13 місяці тому
Wow I didn’t know that Frank Farian already died. I’m intrigued to know more about the mentioned movie.

I recall watching a performance of someone when I was younger with my parents, and I noticed the motion of the singer's lips was off, so asked my father about it and he answered "Imagine trying to sound perfect, while moving around like they are. It's just not possible, so they pretend to sing along with a recorded version of their voice." It just made so much sense to me that I never questioned it ever again. So it's always amusing to me when people get up in arms over artists lip syncing to their own work. It's when someone else sings for them that I tend to agree that it's wrong. So what if the original singer doesn't LOOK amazing. We're there to LISTEN to them!
@LD-tn6ff2 місяці тому
I mean, there are pop stars that do legitimately sing live though with the occasional imperfection to boot. if 90% of them are lipsincing, and 10% arent, it just makes the 10% live singers look like they're the least competent singers of all of them, when in actuality, its likely that they're the best singers of all of them - especially if they're the few willing to sing live. It totally skews the publics perception and recognition of who can legitimately sing. So yes, I do think the public should look down on those that are purposefully deceitful, and in essence, stealing vocal recognition that should be given to someone else. Its a different story if there was transparency, but almost none of them are.

Especially with the televised performances, there's another factor I think that needs to be considered. Even if it were not lipsynced there can always be a lag between sound and picture. I really hate when people say "singers that lip sync don't have any talent." it displays a profound lack of understanding of the entertainment business. When big money is on the line and a bad note can quickly turn into a disaster, the singer may not even have a choice but to lip sync if they want to Perform. Every artist has done it, even rock artist, and basically every artist uses tuning on their vocals, including rock and country artists. There's no reason not to, and it's not even a matter of not being able to sing, it's a matter of what makes the most sense financially and time wise. Getting perfect takes is a lengthy process, and most labels would just rather auto tune the vocals than have the singer run up the recording budget doing take after take.

And you can definitely tell the performers who lip sync all the time compared to the ones who sing live.
@JDoors3 місяці тому
@@crystalsnow1138 I agree we should be treated to the performer's, well, performance, but record labels have kajillions invested so they don't want fans to find out some are not really that good live and unprocessed, it's the processing that makes them sound good, which is why even if they are allowed to do a live performance now they process even live performances in real time, so you're still hearing a simulation of what they actually sound like -- Not sure if any performance is the real thing any more.

sometimes lipsync is inevitable, tv shows prefer to use it to save all the effort about eq, sound test and all that goes with a live show. Singing while dancing requires lot of breath control and technique so i understand the help of backing tracks. Still this make me wonder how good is a singer if i can't hear it live. So better less dancing and more singing . If you see the video of Queen Floor Jansen with Nightwish you'll see how much "static" she is to deliver freaking awesome vocals performances (not the cover videos , that ones are obviously pre-recorded, but i'm still blown away at her ability to sing after her heads windmills).

I don't think people understand what lip syncing is, from some of these clips. Because as you correctly pointed out, in some of these clips they ARE actually singing. There's a difference between lip syncing and just singing with a track in the background. If sound is coming out of your mouth, it is not lip syncing. Like in Dua's, you can actually HEAR a difference between before and after she drops her mic - her vocals are much quieter after she loses her mic, so clearly she was singing in some capacity. Which makes sense - if she was unapologetically lip syncing, she wouldn't be looking so hard for her mic. She'd just throw her hands up and keep going. But she stops for quite a while to try and find the mic, and then stops singing and just dances when she can't find it. That doesn't look like someone who was just lip syncing. That looks like someone who actually really needed the mic, because she was using it. Also I feel so bad for the little girl from the Olympics. I feel like a lot of the focus was on her when honestly, nothing about that was her fault. The organisers and her parents basically threw her to the wolves. She was a child, doing as she was told, in a nation that is NOT known for the freedom of its people. She did not deserve the crap she got from Western media.

Last year we had KISS who although were definitely also Lip Syncing, still put on a fantastic and entertaining enough show that it didn't matter anyway. We didn't expect a bunch of 70 year old washed up rock stars to sound perfect so we can let the Lip Syncing slide! If you want to see an absolutely horrid live performance, watch Meat Loaf's performance at the AFL grand final. I remember watching it live - an absolute train wreck. He became the punch line to many jokes here in Australia after that catastrophe!

the milli vanilli one sounded cool on the first two times of the repeat, like just as "girl you know it's- girl you know it's- girl you know it's trueee"

Hey Joel 👋🏻 nothing to do with the video here, but I thought you could do a video where you react to more modern rock? Like The Pretty Reckless, Nothing But Thieves, Palaye Royale, The Warning, etc. But thank you for all the great new vids lately 😋❤️

For Fall Out Boy’s MTV performance of we didn’t start the fire, they had Patrick’s pre-recorded backing vocals instead of Joe doing backing. So I think it could also depend on the event. Like GMA or MTV wanting it to sound perfect instead of real

10:52 Hey actually if you slow it down you'll see that when she says "Exactly", the host pulls the mic away before she finishes her answer, but her voice doesn't change and we hear the ending of the word "-ctly" crystal clear. So she was actually speaking through her mic, not the host's.

As someone who went to a different show in that concert, Dua sings live.

7:08 There's a Blues Traveler song that covers this issue as well, and that's from back in the 90s when MTV was still... well, MTV!

Fun video 😆 I can't understand how someone would agree to do what Milli Vanilli did, even for money 🤪 I feel so bad for that little girl who was told that she ain't cute enough...

Artists that can sing but that are forced to lip sync is stupid like a good example of this is Nirvanas performance on Top of the pops they were forced to play "Acousticly" and they butchered that on purpose so why have someone lip sync when the true talent is meant to be let out its stupid tbh

THe whole Milli Vanilli thing ended in such a sad tragic way w/the suicide of one of the guys...they were victims of something far more than just them wanting fame.
