Biggest Thing in the Universe: The Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall (Gamma Ray Burst Wall)

Size epitomises the universe... but as numbers climb, the question is what is the largest thing we have ever found? Well, the current largest-known cosmic structure, by definition, is the so-called Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall. This suspected galaxy filament was discovered through its apparent high frequency of Gamma Ray Bursts, and currently is the only structure in the universe known to exceed 10 billion light years. But the nature of the wall is still shrouded in mystery. Everything from its name, to its size, to its formation is debated by scientists... but with similar discoveries of massive GRB formations, our knowledge of distribution, matter and creation within the bounds of this universe is being pushed to the limit.

Keep in mind that a gamma Ray burst is a one time event. Quasars are (relatively) in the same place night to night. It's like measuring the dimensions of a enormous Christmas Tree with only 19 lights flashing once and only once; each one at a different time. As opposed to measuring the dimensions of the same tree using a few more lights that are always lit.

Literally thinking of space and all the vast distances, the depths of time and space and how insanely small and insignificant we are is the only thing that helps me deal with trauma and with the thought of our impending extinction due to climate change. I just think of the universe, and how statistically there should be lots of other life forms out there, even lots of intelligent other life forms, and whatever happens here doesn’t seem so important anymore.

The Kardashev scale of alien civilizations states: Type III civilization, also called a galactic civilization-can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy. Maybe we are observing a Type IV civilization at work? Just pondering ....
