Its been nearly 2 years since my last can melt so I thought why not do one today. Melting cans is such a slow process so I thought I might as well mirror the bar up nicely. Not a lot to add to the stack today but a welcome addition none the less. Sit back take a break and I hope you enjoy todays video. Have an awesome weekend and hope to see you all next Friday for another melt.

HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

So in Sweden (and many European countries) you can recycle the cans for 1kr a piece, which means those 250 cans would be worth about 24 USD, but when you melted it down to raw aluminium, it's now worth about 4,34 dollars for the 2,25kg you collected. Huge loss, but if you just like melting stuff and make youtube videos about it, it definitely adds value! :D
@gustavocabrall

Some US states are the same, but it varies. .05, .10, or nothing per can. Unfortunately scrap metal prices have come down so much that throwing them in the recycling bin in a non-can fee location is the only thing that makes sense. Used to be decent money in scrap aluminum, enough that it was worth saving it until you could turn it in to a salvage place yourself. Melting things however, is always fun.

Fun fact: in my state, you get 5 cents back on each can when you recycle them. It's very amusing to me that the redemption value on those 250 cans is $12.50 while the actual material price is less than eight bucks.
@Randomadventureswithpaul
@Randomadventureswithpaul 2 роки тому
So where I live it's 10 cents per can return, but you pay that 10 cents at the point of purchase they call it a "bottle deposit" and you get that "deposit" back if you return the cans or bottles to the depot. I don't think it's tied to the literal weight value of the recyclable product, it's just a forced incentive to get people to stop throwing them in the trash, or melting them into bars... I bet it's probably the same in your area.

The price of metal is constantly going up and down so it's hard to plan around stuff like that. 10:38 Worked in a foundry once when I was 17. Boss brought out a steel “pig” and told me to pour my first bucket of aluminum into that because the owner wanted to cut down on imperfections in the vehicle parts we were casting. No one knew to make sure to put that near the crucible and when I began pouring my metal into that damn thing the aluminum started bubbling up around the edges of the pig. Luckily I sensed something was wrong when the aluminum bubbles started coalescing into one big bubble. I told my coworkers to get back and a second later POP! all that metal went about 20 feet up and came back down on the crucible operator’s back. Sadly he was the only one not wearing any protective gear. I was told later that at the hospital, it took a very long time to pick all that aluminum out of his back…..some dangerous stuff if not done correctly

You should try using salt flux for separating the aluminum and dross. The slag you keep remelting is impurities stuck to the aluminum. Salt flux will separate it when mixed and stirred into the molten metal and then dross will be on the top of the pot(usually shiny black with very little pearls of aluminum beads). Cans are very dirty as far as what clean aluminum is considered.

for everyone saying it has plastic on the inside, so it's bad, it's actually not, aluminum with high percentage is way stronger and was more resistant to thermal expansion, that's why they use Hypereutectic pistons with high silicone percentage (more than 13 %) in most modern engines.
