Moon Beams is a 1962 album by jazz musician Bill Evans, and the first trio album recorded by Evans after the death of Scott LaFaro. With Chuck Israels on bass taking the place of LaFaro, Evans recorded several songs during these May and June 1962 sessions. Moon Beams contains a collection of ballads recorded during this period. The more uptempo tunes were put on How My Heart Sings!. In 2012, it was released a new remastered edition which includes three previously unreleased alternate takes.

It is wonderful but in hindsight it is clear that jazz was in a deadend street. We now listen to this as 'cocktail piano' or 'lounge music' or 'restaurant music', i.e. music without ambition. But in 1962 with Evans, it was meant as ambitious, but it was only perfect and perfect is not enough. You need to put this in context. In 1962, something was going on but people like Evans did not know what is was. For some years now, some tried to get out of this deadend street, like Dave Brubeck. But it took Herbie Hancock to get a new way of making music. In 1962 we had Watermelon Man, still in the style of Miles Davis,, but only in 1973 we got the breakthrough: . Unfortunately, by then, jazz had lost all of its significance.

Pls don't talk about Bill saying he gives "Relax". Bill does not give relax, but Big Soul movements.
Giacomo Місяць тому
Music is meant to be subjective. I, too, listen to Bill whenever I want to explore my feelings with the unique depth he is capable of giving, but it's not bad if someone else wants to listen to his music with the intent of relaxing. We should stop complaining about the interpretation of art, or about the preferences of others. Just experience and spread music, that's what brings good to all
playandteach Місяць тому
I think there are different interpretations of relax. It doesn't mean that it is lift music necessarily, maybe just that the person has found their home moment - like the bottom of a wine glass can mean different things for different people.

< The Great Warning> My child, just as I gave the angels a free will I also give My people a free will. The time is soon coming when all will be brought to their knees. When you see your soul you will see all the beauty and goodness that I see. When you see your soul you will see all that was not pleasing to Me. You must love even your worst enemy. You must not try to hurt those that have hurt you. When you see your soul you will see all the hurtful things and wrong choices you have made. You will know what I want of you and those who choose not to change their ways will see their punishment. There will be many who will not truly believe in Me even after they see their soul. Many will still reject Me. Do not waste this time, My people, for there are many that have gone before you and have not had this opportunity to repent and change their ways. You do not know the day or the hour when you will have to stand before Me. I am preparing you now. You must go and repent and live the Gospel messages. You must witness My love to your brothers and sisters for you do not know the state of their soul. You must not fear these words I give you for if you fear that is one more soul that could have been saved. I will protect you, dear child, but you must learn to trust in Me. You must turn all fear and worries over to Me for you cannot walk this path alone. Go forth and spread these messages. Tell My people that all will be done according to My will. Tell My people that the hour is truly at hand. Remember to trust in Me and continue to look to your heavenly Mother for she and I are here to assist you. Now go forth and have peace. 5/27/03 3:16 PM

Love this...had it as an LP way back when. I'm still bothered by the out of tune and somewhat "dead" upper register of the piano. I still remain surprised Evans didn't have a technician at the session. Coming as it did about a year after Scott LaFaro's shocking death, and with Chuck Israels as a newcomer to the trio, I wonder if Evans was still experiencing some loss and depression.

Hearing this for the first time. You heard me. The first time. It reminds me that there's a world of music I have yet to hear. I love all kinds of music in many styles. I grew up hearing a lot of jazz. Chick Corea, SAtchmo, Thelonius Monk. I cut my teeth on Metal. Listened to tons of classical, samba, bossa nova, blue grass. So much music and I haven't even scratched the surface yet. I need more time to explore. 100 years is not long enough. I want to hear and listen to and appreciate all the music.

There is no one like Bill Evans and never will be. What he contributed to the world of jazz piano with his lyrical sensibilities changed the essence of the modern jazz trio forever. I met him once on his break at the Village Gate on Bleeker Street, NYC. I just walked over to the table where he was sitting alone, and told him how his music had changed my life for the better. He seemed surprised and happy to hear it. And to my amazement, he offered me his hand to shake, which I did...gently.. A memorable moment for sure. I'm in my 70s now and I still listen to his music. It can transport one's soul if we allow it. God bless him.

A suivre...

Bill Evans--greatest jazz pianist ever!
Tom Stage

Greg - Yes, I get it's your opinion. I was just sharing mine. =O) I totally agree with you on Bill being way under-recognized and appreciated. While I have known of Bill Evans for many years, sadly - it hasn't been until recently that I've come to actually listen to his recordings. I started with his Solo Sessions I & II and have branched out from there - e.g. his trio recordings with Eddie Gomez on bass. I am/was a trombonist by training but really love a good jazz piano trio. I think what I've come to appreciate the most about Bill is his chord "choices", which is most apparent on his solo recordings. It takes a standard like "When I Fall in Love" and elevates it to a whole different level. That's what made him a great "innovator" - as you put it - in jazz.
Greg Giacona
Greg Giacona Місяць тому
@Tom Stage Hey--it's my opinion---OK? I'm a professional working jazz pianist who has heard and played arrangements by almost all the pianists you named--they are all incredible, but in my educated opinion, Bill sits atop the mountain, for all he brought to the art of jazz piano---he was an innovator and original voice in the jazz world. In my opinion he's wayyyy under-recognized for his contributions.
Tom Stage
Tom Stage Місяць тому
Great? - Absolutely! Greatest??? I think it's somewhat pointless to label any one jazz pianist "greatest" because there are/were so many great ones: Art Tatum, George Shearing, Marian McPartland, Oscar Peterson, Ray Bryant, Nat King Cole - to name a few. And every one of them had their own particular style of playing and improvising. The way Oscar improvises is totally different than Bill. However, I can enjoy and appreciate them both equally.
