Now show the blackout lights from different distances! The lines (or cat eyes) are used to establish following distance in a convoy. If you see one red line from a taillight, you are too far behind, two lines and you are the correct distance and 4 lines, you are too close.
@theproffessional913 днів тому
The important thing to keep in mind, for those who don't know, is that these were meant for sneaking around at night, and therefore would only be used at low speeds alongside Infantry.
@michaelbuckers10 днів тому
I wonder how many people got killed because they didn't think twice about "use these for sneaking around at night" because they are extremely conspicuous in the dark.
@arthurman41510 днів тому
@michaelbuckers it's to make it less visible to planes, even if the light is visible it will be so small it wont look like a cars headlights. if there is someone on the ground they could hear the engine anyway

It's common practice for infantry too, to point their flashlights down just right in front of their feet, so they don't attract as much attention. Ofc it can still be seen, but it's a lot harder to notice a flashlight pointing on the ground than one pointing right at you.
@TheKingLux5 днів тому
flashlights issued to US Army personnel now come with lens filters to change the color or pattern of the light output, including a completely opaque white cover which I assume could be used to signal to someone in the distance without lighting anything directly around you. but there's also red and blue lenses

Wouldnt it be better to just make the blackout lights red lights? Since red light cannot be seen from super far away? (Unless its super strong)
@michaelbuckers10 днів тому
But then you couldnt' see the road and that defeats the purpose. It somehow didn't bother them that the lights CAN be seen from far away. It's like they thought that if the lights weren't quite as bright, the germans would just ignore it.

@manoahvanderwolf325911 днів тому
this worked against airplanes, but not for land much, due to the fact that the engine is loud enough to be heard, only in dense forestation would the sound get absorbed by the environment sufficiently to cover the noise - however, at that same area you'd not really need the blackout lights much either. the sound of the jeeps obviously cannot be heard by a plane, so you're virtually 'cloaked' in the night like this, in places like the desert for example,. war would have looked vastly different if there were proper electric powertrains back in the day with range. i mean the engines were there to be fair, but the battery capacity wasn't, nor a reasonable way of charging. but i imagine the only thing more scary than being able to drive a completely silent electric jeep with blackout lights at night, would be a completely silent electric tank.
@michaelbuckers10 днів тому
My man, soon we're not gonna HAVE tanks. When a $1000 aliexpress drone can bypass any amount of armor, there's no reason to have any amount of armor. Expect future vehicles protection to be limited against small arms only.

As you can clearly see, the lights are very clearly visible in the night to the enemy. If you to use these lights for sneaking past enemy at night, they will get you spotted! Turn off all lights, even tiny indicators on the dashboard, and then you can drive without alerting anyone more than a moving shadow making loud revving noises can alert people already.
@arthurman41510 днів тому
That's not the point it's to stop being spotted by planes, remember if they are travelling in a convoy they need to be seen by their friendlies so they don't crash. If you were trying to sneek under their noses I'm sure they could turn them off, lights are also needed to navigate
