Blue Origin has been around longer than SpaceX, but they're a lot more secretive about their technology and the things they've built. I wanted to make an overview of the 6 different rocket engines they're designed and tested and the vehicles that have been propelled by them.

At some point ... when Starships are launched and landed every hour, every day ... we may find ourselves not getting excited anymore about another bellyflop. We tend to get blasé. It happened to trains, automobiles, airplanes, to the Moon landings, and even to the Falcon 9 boosters landing back on Earth. So, let's enjoy this amazing phase. And also; there will always be new developments.

TubularAp is right.. but that's OK. Everyone should go out and actually see one live. The primordial like, and gut wrenching sound that fills the atmosphere from miles away can't be duplicated through any audio device known to man. The Space Shuttle was unbelievable.. The giant new rockets that will rival the mighty Saturn 5 will be a whole different level.

I don't think anybody has a problem with them launching stuff up. More launches = better access to space. What everybody laughs at, however, is that they seem to believe they are competition to SpaceX despite never having launched anything to orbit yet. Granted that could change, but they don't have much to back this capability, so far.
@zomdiax5

yea, by time new glenn launches we will already have starship completed, while new glenn is closer to the falcon heavy
@-danR
@-danR 3 роки тому
I think the problem is that they believe they are _not_ in competition with SpaceX, that they are plotting a completely different course to a completely different goal. The problem is that any goal they have can be hijacked. The Falcon system is pretty well set to better what Bezos' suborbital space tourism has planned by twice the altitude or more. Musk doesn't do this, simply because he doesn't seem interested.
@MyKharli
@MyKharli 3 роки тому
I think they make space x look amateur .
@MDP1702
@MDP1702 3 роки тому
@@-danR it costs 50 million per seat for crew dragon, how they are well set to go into space tourism with that is beyond me, even if this means people spend more than a couple of minutes in zero gravity. If SpaceX wants to get into space tourism they'll need either starship or much cheaper falcon 9 flights. And at this moment we have no idea how much a New Glenn launch will cost. But space tourism isn't BO's goal, lunar operations and space stations in general are (with Bezos being a proponent of something like an o'neill cylinder rather than mars). SpaceX goal is mars, BO is lunar and spacestations. Ofcourse SpaceX might possibly end up in BO's waters, however they'll need the free capacity for that and their mars goal will probably require most if of their capacity for a long time. And again in the end we don't know what BO's capacities and costs will be by 2025 or the end of this decade. For all we know they'll get a lock on lunar activities due to for example their fuel choice, ... BO goes slowly, but I wouldn't underestimate them either in the long run. Eventually there will be a point that SpaceX can't "easily" improve things, if BO comes only a few years later, that might not matter if they are eventually just as good/better at what they need to do.

@omerunal1296
@omerunal1296 3 роки тому
@@zchris13 BE-3U is an open expander cycle engine and BE-7 is a closed dual expander cycle engine. From Blue Origin website: "BE-7 is an additively manufactured, high-performance, dual-expander cycle engine, generating 40 kN (10,000 lbf) thrust." Dual expander cycle increases mass in total but increases reliability with having seperate oxygen and hydrogen pumping systems. The turbine that drives the oxygen pumps are driven by the gaseous oxygen and the turbine that drives the hydrogen pump is driven by gaseous hydrogen. And this reduces the need for seals and other protective equipments for not having hydrogen and oxygen mixing in an unwanted place. Because oxygen flow is not near the gaseous hydrogen driven turbine at all unlike a open expander cycle engine. And reliability is an important thing for a lunar landing engine. I hope I could've helped :) (I am not a native speaker by the way, sorry if there is wrong grammar or spelling :/)

@Hash Frowns, I didn't mean to be obscure, but the "space station" reference was about a penile rocket docking with something. Something "vulva-shaped". Nonetheless, there are some other ways to tie the two references together. Space stations go up, as you say, piece by piece and are assembled in orbit. Launch vehicles and spacecraft, on the other hand, start out fully assembled and gradually lose pieces. Eventually, they get to the point that all they have left to do is drop down to Earth. Kinda like older men . . . . By the way, I fit into that latter category, so it's as much about me as anyone else. If it applies to you and you're willing to own it, feel free.

They just want to be SpaceX so hard their insecurity isn't even funny anymore. What's more gradiatim ferociter than blowing up a rocket, getting the next one on the launch pad as well, and blowing it up as well but in a different way to solve problems one by one? Blue Origin hasn't blown up nearly as many rockets as SpaceX, and that's exactly their problem. If you've blown up a rocket with no customer payload, and got the data on exactly how it blew up, that's not a problem, that's science. You can try to simulate things, but when you're pushing the very edge of technology to create something new you don't verify on the test stand, you test with the expectation of not succeeding on first try, but finding out how you fail. _That_ is what "gradiatim ferociter" should mean. Sitting at a computer all day and launching a test vehicle 14 times over the course of five years is not ferociter at all.
@PagsPayback
@PagsPayback 3 роки тому
At the moment they are pretty Ferociter. I took SpaceX 5 years to develop and fly Falcon 9 after announcing it. New Glenn was announced in 2016 so a 2021 first flight would have been astounding. It'll probably get pushed to next year, but that is not really a surprise after last year.
@DeeSnow97
@DeeSnow97 3 роки тому
@@PagsPayback Announcement is arbitrary, it's just when the company decides to publicly speak about the idea. Development time is what matters. Blue Origin has existed for two years longer than SpaceX, and in that time SpaceX has become the best place to go for launching stuff into space, while Blue Origin is not even an option.
@PagsPayback
@PagsPayback 3 роки тому
@@DeeSnow97 Of course it is kinda arbitrary. BO worked on the NG before they announced it and SpaceX worked on the Falcon 9 before they announced it. But it is one of the best points of reference we have. The foundation of the company is not really a good reference for their pace in comparison. BO was more of a think tank with a tiny budget, experimenting with vertical takoff and landing for the first 10 years. Comparing early SpaceX and early BO really doesn't work, because their objectives were completely different. BO only became comparable to SpaceX in 2015/2016, when they finally received a budget that was able to pay for the development of serious workhorse. That's when their priorities changed. And from what we can see (development of new engines, building new factories and the presentation of the first parts of NG) there is no reason to believe that they are not working ferociously towards their first orbital launch. We obviously won't know until they announce a launch date (my guess: first half of 2022) how it is really going, but that's kinda the Problem if you are an outside observer.

And SpaceX's PR helps them in other ways by then making it easier to recruit more talent. Until very recently, I taught calculus and a bunch of other math classes to college students , many who were training to be engineers. By far the most common aerospace company that students wanted to work for was SpaceX, and some of them did actually go on to do so. My impression is that Blue Origin has made a concerted effort to recruit recently, so it may not be as extreme now. But SpaceX's active PR together with accomplishments has for a while now meant there are a lot of talented people who as their very first choice want to work for them. So SpaceX gets the first pick of the litter. The advantage from that probably is compounding. In contrast, until very recently (last 2 years) one couldn't even easily buy Blue Origin swag. Blue's lack of attention to PR has combined badly with their slow public pace.

Yeah, I'll believe a New Glenn is anything but vaporware the day it shows up on a launch pad. Until then I'm extremely skeptical. I think the sale of BE-4 engines to ULA was the death-knell of New Glenn. I'm also skeptical of their landing expertise since they haven't managed to even test a vehicle larger than New Shepard. Blue Origin is going to have to go through the same growing pains of landing a large rocket as SpaceX did 10+ years ago. Not a good sign. Will I be exited if Jeff manages to get New Glenn flying? Yup. Do I expect it to happen any time soon? Nope.
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 3 роки тому
I think they'll be pretty quick to land New Glenn... they've had a lot of practice with the smaller rocket, and while that won't translate exactly to a new vehicle, it'll give them a good understanding of what's involved. We saw that with SpaceX, where SN8 would have made a perfect landing on the first attempt, had it not been for a fault... and despite the differences in the descent profile, that almost-success was built on a lot of experience with landing Falcon 9 boosters. However, I agree that we're not going to see this thing flying any time soon.
@tarmaque
@tarmaque 3 роки тому
@@simongeard4824 New Glenn is a vastly different creature than the New Shepard, using much different engines and entirely different control systems. Could it land the first time safely? Possibly. Do I think it will? I doubt it. Remember, the BE-4 engine hasn't even flown yet. All they've got is test stand data. They don't even have a whole rocket yet in order to do test firings, and they only have a precious few engines that are all either test engines or scheduled to be used by ULA. Meanwhile, over at SpaceX, they have more Raptors that have flown than BE-4s that exist, they've continued to make improvements on the design based on experience, and are still looking to improve the design. They have built over 50 engines so far. Even so recently as October 2020 Blue Origin was having difficulty with the turbo-pumps on the BE-4. It's simply not ready for prime time yet.
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 3 роки тому
@@tarmaque Most of which I agree with. I simply dispute that it will take them a long time to figure out landings. SpaceX have already demonstrated that they could get the Starship landing almost perfect on the first attempt, despite that vehicle being very different from anything they've landed before. That suggests that prior experience does have a lot of value, and Blue Origin do have a fair bit of experience at landing boosters. That said, while they have experience of launch and landing, they have none when it comes to orbital flight. New Shepard doesn't carry much speed on re-entry compared to a proper booster.
