We need something we can measure!

Juan is king when it comes to reviewing. Just so happens this is one of of my all-time favorite discussions too. In this order, if you own an Android, you want LDAC first, followed by aptX HD, aptX LL, and lastly, aptX. Unless you are on an Apple device, AAC is right around SBC.

Excellent review! I always thought wired audio was the only way to Hi-Fi music but just upgraded to Pixel 4 and bought Dongle to keep using my wired headphones to my disappointment. I decided to buy the Anker Soundcore liberty 2 and was blown away with the audio quality, just found out it's supports Aptx HD that Pixel uses therefore if the excellent results.

Another advantage to having the headphone jack natively on a smartphone: external microphones. This isn't a widespread advantage though unless you use your smartphone as a camera anyways but it does give you versatility, specially if you pair your device with something like a gimbal. Yes, external USB-C to 3.5mm dongles can still work but at the same time, just highlights the fact that removing the jack in the first place is still stupid.

@DJFirefoxfox there's almost no difference in sound quality with ldac and a dedicated audio jack. Sony uses some pretty good dac amp chipsets on their phones! I'm ngl I feel like I should've got that instead lol.

Great info. But aptx has lots of variants. In terms of pairing to video, the low-latency is important. Aptx-LL vs. Aptx HD. I'm actually looking for a good BT transmitter to do both aptx and ldac for multiple headphones to TV.

Great vid juan. If u get some time, I’d love to know something. :P Have u used the btr3 as a usb dac yet? If u do, cud u compare the sound quality with an lg 30/40 on similar volume levels. I know the v40 has more power but just a general opinion coz im confused as to how much better the v40 dac is? Is it a super obvious and noticeable change in sound quality over the btr3?

Great review same opinion for what i have experienced the first time until now for LDAC and APTX/ APTX HD SBC is just fine if you are not overly critical and most of the time, people are using BT devices on the go where you can't really hear the sound properly but with the advent of great noise canceling BT, this is not the case now, and LDAC and APTX is definitely the way to go for higher fidelity, initially i had some gripes with LDAC when i placed my phone in my backpocket the connection drops a bit, but recent years i have not experienced this much anymore with newer devices (still have it sometimes) also still a wired guy :)

Don't forget to drop that AVRCP if the higher level functions aren't needed if you're just listening to music. Uses up bandwidth

LG V20 with Sony MDR1000X running flac files via LDAC codec is a very acceptable portable option for me. First proper listen last night and I was very impressed that this was a wireless signal. Great and informative video my friend.

I appreciate YOUR research as well as the Layman's Translation to your viewers that might NOT be up on their Audiophile Game!😉 As an Audio Enthusiast (Primarily Automotive Audio), I 💯% AGREE with your End Result Finding-Although BT Audio had come a long way since early inception, NOTHING beats the Sound Quality or Continuos Reliability provided by a well-made Audio Cable's Direct-connection! It may seem that an audio jack on cell phones is getting phased out by Top Phone Manufacturers, I HOPE The Industry DOESN'T totally kill off a necessary feature for those of US, within this niche! He means the DAC quality is bad and almost all dongles as they have to be super-small to fit in the tiny Dongle also not all Type C plugs and/or ports use USB 3 or 3.1 specifications many are still using USB 2.0 to save literally a few pennies on costs this is inexcusable on flagships and upper mid-range devices considering the costs!

If you have to use a USB c dongle use an LG or Sony one as they have at Least a 24-bit DAC if not a 32-bit DAC but are very hard to find The best Audio Quality Bluetooth chipsets are by Realtek!

@@DarthAwar you have Apple dongle for 9$ (both USB & Lightening) with better than CD quality SINAD, for 45$ you can either get Meizu HiFi Pro or TempoTec Sonata HD Pro with SINAD above 110 dB. USB audio 3.0 sadly never begin to live regardless of the platform so 2.0 is what's used up to date which is generally OK. Lacking things are; clean power delivery, better EMI shielding, good aftermarket cable's and better OS infrastructure.

Holy hell!! THANK YOU for taking the time to make a quality video! This is probably the most honest video about bluetooth audio quality I have seen yet and that you don't just say "EW BLUETOOTH EW THAT WILL NEVER SOUND GOOD!" because it's simply not true. I'm tired of hearing the nonsense.

I just received the BTR3 today, very impressed! I think it sounds better than out of the 3.5mm jack on my Samsung S8. Can even be used as a wired external DAC for a desktop or laptop which is great. Thought I'd see how it compares to my Chord Mojo. Definitely no competition there 😊. Rightfully so considering the mojo costs 8 times as much.

@@SomeGadgetGuy Only Huawei's Pro models are missing the headphone jack. For example: Mate 20 and Mate 20 X come with the beloved headphone jack. Samsung's behavior is strange: Galaxy S10 models with headphone jack and Galaxy A8s (first punch notch) no headphone jack. Hope you'll meet "nitpicker" Damir Franc on CES in Las Vegas. Hi Juan! The theme you are using is straight from Maximum Battery Extender Mode? I'm just not sure because you have smoother effects compared to my V35 even though I've turned off the Battery Saving Options from that Mode: *Reduced Frame Rates *Restrict Background Data I really want a working setup like on your V40. LDAC on the XB910n and lg v60. Works flawlessly! Love this phone and these headphones. Linux also supports LDAC via pulse audio and pipewire. Windows is supposed to support AAC, but apparently it needs an intel bt for it to work (doesn't work on my ASUS BT dongle)

Hello Juan, I'd love if you could help me with something regarding the Fiio BTR3. Can this product function as a bluetooth receiver AND a DAC at the same time? At first I would connect it to my phone and the sound would be pretty loud. Some time later I noticed that the volume decreased or something... When connected as a USB dac to a PC for example, the volume is high, 4-5 times higher than being on bluetooth... So I was wondering... can it use the DAC while on bluetooth? At first it sounded like it, but now it seems like the DAC doesn't participate any more... (doesn't give as much power). Is it my idea? I don't know really... I appreciate any reply, thanks.

Their are several things that lead to Audio Quality over Bluetooth including Bluetooth generation (4.0 or 4.1 or 4.2 or 5), Chip maker & Quality of Chip, Codec used, Congestion on 2.4ghz band, DAC, Area Design & Material!

Great video. So about the btr3. Or in this case I'm looking at getting the btr5. Right now I have a pixel 4 so I can use LDAC. But I think I'm going with an iphone next and it will be my main music player. Will I still see the benefits of a high quality Bluetooth dac/amp like the btr5 even though its limited to AAC. As I believe the iphone doesn't like being wire connected to the btr5 due to not being MFi. Thanks

I still use a pair of headphones, but I'd switch to wireless because of the obvious downside with cables: they tend to break. And I would've loved to see USB-C getting adopted more widely until your remark about it being rubbish. I'm looking forward to hearing your explanation on that. Meanwhile, when these headphones will stop working, I'll probably invest in a pair with removable cable so I could at least change the cable if it breaks again. The funny thing is, it's always the bit next to the jack that breaks due to pocket wear. Never the headset. And I don't have a soldering iron nor the experience to change the cable/jack.

I have the btr3k and the btr5, don’t ask I know why both, but they are great and I often take some IEM’s and my btr5 or 3 with me travelling, as well as a pair of Bluetooth earbuds and sometimes my Sony XM4’s if need the NC.

was having problem with my Moto G7 - LOW Volume to Bluetooth - after a week on Tech support, going to service centers I figured it out! in the Developer options it offers me a Bluetooth QUALITY setting choice! I chose the 990 and all of a sudden the Volume was Louder & Clearer

i had gotten the xb900n's a couple of days ago and i thought they sounded great but then i was like wait didnt this have fancy bluetooths or whatever and then i finally figured out how to enable LDAC and yeah sounds better and im even happier 😄

I really like ldac tbh. I don't have a lot of high res albums but they make a noticable difference and after breaking my last pair of wired headphones by stepping on the chord, I need wireless headphones that can play hi res. Since my sony xb31 speaker supports ldac and sounds great, I think I'll go with a sony pair of headphones too. The wi ch700n have good frequency response which is what I care about the most. Wish sony turned the legendary mdr 7506 headphones into bluetooth headphones. Nothing sounds better than those things

I use 3.5 mm jack on my cell phone connected to a rca input speaker. But when I use Bluetooth connection it's sound great. Just unchecked the so round sound and headphone enhancement on your phone, and don't activate the bass button on the speaker. Try to select audio option on you're speaker for bass sound. It's work for me Great.

Excellent video, however maybe I'm a little late to the party, but I have a question.. So we understand that LDAC, under optimal conditions is the best Does having your phone Bluetooth 4.1 in your pocket/on a table while listening to your music files (FLAC/WAV) and a your high end headset, achieve that optimal condition? or is it Bluetooth 5.0 a must have here?

As long as the data transmission isn't interrupted, and both devices support LDAC, then it really should matter at reasonable distances. Wireless systems can be interrupted, so line of sight is always preferred, but it should still do ok in your pocket.

Just wondering , if i connect FiiO btr5 to my laptop using cable , and play audio on laptop through FiiO btr5, then connect the WH1000MX4 to FiiO btr5 Bluetooth. Both these device support LDAC, if so, does this mean that I am using LDAC codec between FiiO and headphones ? Is the same theory could apply to iPhone?

Yes. It will work out. But you should try aptx hd also. And if your headphones have balanced input try wired also. You should hear the diff.

I absolutely agree with you, I use MDR CD900ST for home listening and I'm now looking for TWS when I go outside, any suggestion? Max price 250€, I own Android device which supports SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and LDAC. In addition, why AAC on android is bad compared to Apple in terms of sound quality?

Hey question I think you can answer I have a z5 premium smartphone running in LCAD The headphones I bought MDR zx330bt claim to have high quality mode swapping them from SBC to AAC is there even a point? I'm still confused sorry if it's a stupid question

Btw, if anyone is looking for new headphones (or tvs) I really couldn't recommend rtings more highly. You'll be fucking shocked at how in depth they go in reviewing tvs and headphones. They have multiple charts for things even most audiophiles haven't heard of. They really go deep and give detailed ratings for every aspect. No, I don't work for them, I'm just amazed by what they do and think more people should know about them. I literally won't buy a tv or headphones without seeing their review. I like to be aware of everything before I buy them

Regarding headphone jack, I think it'll still be around for the next 5 years :) just like it took 5 years for usb-c to come down from the top-end smartphones to the basic 200€ ones. I know what im talking about as Im still rocking my HTC 10 which was one of the first models to use type C conector. In fact its main contender at the time, the Galaxy S7 was the last flagship Samsung to include Micro Usb.

great video! i send spotify from my android phone via Bluetooth aptx to my audioengine b1 hooked to my amplifier. always wonder whether it is worth upgrading to a streaming device like a wiim mini or bluesound node. wonder if I would hear a significant difference, considerinf it's still spotify

There are still benefits to improving hardware while listening to compressed music, but if you're going through all that, it might ALSO be fun to test drive a streaming service that pumps up quality.

Actually, Oluv's channel compares sound quality with IN-EAR mics and against a flat baseline standard. No sound proof room. These high-quality, in-ear mics are pretty impressive when conducting such comparisons.

Buy the BTR3 he uses. I would argue it has a better amp than an iPhone. It's only $69, if it sucks send it back. You won't send it back, though.

Did you do a blind test on whether you could hear the difference? That’s the only way to really measure, beyond figures and specs. Appreciate taking a scientific look at it, though.

i remember old lg phones running lolipop or marshmallow can do multi audio routing. through the wired and wireless bluetooth headset at the same time. can lg v40 do this too? they removed it on newer devices can it connect to multiple Bluetooth headset/speaker like note9?

Does the LDAC or Aptx HD have any advantage on streaming apps like Apple music, Google music, Amazon , Spotify. Except Tidal as its HIFI and one has to use wired. What abt the other streaming apps as most does 320Kbps max as high quality . May be FLAC will demand more and it needs 4.5Mbps

I want to buy the new px7 from bowlers and wilkins px 7 i heard they sound better than sony. Sadly no Ldac but aptxhd. I wonder if it makes a difference lol
