What really caught my attention was at 1:36 where the car was in the event of a rollover. The seat belt pretensioners were very late at locking and tightening the seatbelt, resulting the dummy touching the roof, which is dangerous in a rollover because the roof may cave in a little. You want to be locked down in the seat during a rollover. No slack should be present.

Yes I understand. I have been in that situation too and luckily enough my car kept sliding until I hit a cable barrier. Car was totalled but I was ok. The problem here is the sand will probably cushion the roof so it won't crush in as badly as in a real crash situation. They should have made the car hit a small sand pit to initiate the rollover, then have the roof hit a solid floor to make sure there's no/little intrusion of the roof on the dummy's heads hitting a solid surface.

My BMW rolled over last week if it wasn't for the side airbags I'm sure I would've died. I'm truly thankful to BMW for conducting these tests....

Here they have a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of high-speed video cameras, and he's there walking around with a $75 hand-held taking pictures of nothing.

@MrPenobe I was in a 2009 Mercedes-Benz C300 and I rolled over on the New Jersey Turnpike about 5 times. As all of the tires went off the ground, I felt my seat belt pretensioners tighten my seat belt and both the side and chest airbag deployed. I barely even moved an inch while rolling. Also, the roof of the car hardly caved in. All it has was little dents at the top. Do recall that I was going about 60 MPH and I rolled 5 times, according to police. They made a brilliant car with the X6. Maybe they could expand there budget a bit further and get there customer base the driving lessons they so urgently need it would be much appreciated.

My good ol' Chevy Blazer LS did NOT pass the roll test well, with me inside! Almost killed me when that POS flipped. Roof crushed into top of the driver-side (aka ME & my head), lucky to be alive. Back driving BMW now (that blazer was my car between my 328 & 330 E46) .. THANK GOD 4 BMW!

@MrPenobe New Mercedes-Benz cars, Volvo's, BMW, Volkswagen's, and Audi's now as you can tell do not have poor roof structures. If you go watch some of the rollover testings, you will see that the roof barely even moves an inch. However, seat belt pretensioners are really effective in rollover crashes seeing that they hold you down. I did notice that the seat belt pretensioner was very late in this test at 1:36. Side airbags are also a effective safety key in rollovers.

lol i had an 89 wolfs jetta. lost control at 70 held on to it fish tailing.. till i hit the soft dirt on side of road at under 10 mph.. the car fliped on its side.. pushed it back over and drove it home.. just needed a little dent repair and paint..

Well from volvo you can expect good results. My case was lucky that it was not casually lithuanian way "sandwiched" :D but a genuine chassis. later we even streched the body back to original shape and sold it. :)

They should test each crash at ever 10mph :)

@LoveTheCity123 well glad you walked away form it. i was not referring to all cars/company's just the mid grade vehicles the vehicles and company's you're talking about are the more expensive models of car's that have better safety because the cost of there vehicle's allows them to add more safety to it. For instance less expensive vehicles such as a ford contor would not fair well in a roll over or a dodge pickup these are the kind i'm talking about having less safety in those area's

@heldgop The gimmicks are those from your German engineers. As said, we don't require any of this testing, and as far as I know BMW is the only company that even tests rollover crashes. And if they simply change the dollar sign to the euro, it should be quite cheap for you to buy it then because of the exchange rate.

You can't base the safety of a vehicle based purely on personal experience in an isolated event. At that speed, if you live or die is based mostly on luck.

This is the result from watching too many times Cobra11 :D engineers may change their view perspective and invent crazy stuff. Next time they`ll do a hook test. How the car will behave, when a random hook appears on the Autobahn and rips off your ceiling and flip you straight into the opposite lanes where a truck flies over you and hit the nearest gas station and explodes. But seriously - its a good thing, safety is important.

They changed entire ramp instead of just putting a bar on the way where tyres would have hit and stoped and a car rolled over

Technically in none of these tests did the car actually 'roll over' it only slid onto its side and you could do that in pretty much any car with little damadge to the structure and occupants.

@trancowy89 Dude, no crash test is done over 60mph anyway. At that speed, even if the car takes the hit appropiately, you internal organs won't stand the deaceleration and you'll die anyway (internal bleeding, organ dislocation, etc) if the crash doesn´t kill you instalntly ;)

I got a idea why not you guys made a crash test call the brake and fly crash test ok how my idea is going to work is that one car drive like 80k/m And then the atoher car keep continue driving 40k/m and the car drive 80k/m ASB brake so when a Abs brake time the car duck down is it so The car drive 40k/m One of the wheel step on a stone and then the car roll over the car that brake so is a rollover type of test I create

Yeah the US government might not but IIHS does a rigorous roof strength test so don’t act like you are doing it to be nice.

@LoveTheCity123 there the less expensive brands and it's not just those two company's there are others the fair the same in that area so all i'm saying is the dift of the car/trucks of the worlds population is driving these kind of vehicles. Most of the vehicles you are talking about are made in the UK and are made to survive crashes on the Auto bond, even tho a lot of there cars are not structural on the roof either. but yes some company do well with safety in all area's.
